I watched this one with my mom because of this video, and wow we were amazed! It was hard to imagine that we'd get so invested in the characters at first, but when it all came together it was something else. Having lots of sporadic glimpses into what's going on ended up making the big reveals so impactful, like we realized the tragic backstory along with the characters and immediately understood its full implications as they did. Thank you for turning us onto this show, it's definitely under-appreciated!
One of the best anime of all time, a true classic, and almost NOBODY talks about it! A true crime against art. Great review. I bought it blind from a Best Buy on a whim about 15 years ago, and it was one of the best purchases I ever made. Except for that dub.... yeesh, that was an absolute dumpster fire.
Such a great anime with unforgetable scenes really underrated. I went in expecting a mystey 60s style anime and found myself so invested in the story. This anime deserves more recognition
The first time I came across this show was during a trip in the late 2000s, my cousin was flipping through the TV channels and that's when I saw small glimpses of it. I remembered the children in black cloaks with white hair, the bloodstains followed by a man with a pained expression staring through a capsule, and a girl sobbing amongst a group of children. Those bits of memories stayed with me for many years, and it bothered me that I didn't know the name of this anime. It was only until this year that I finally found it, and I am so thankful that I got the chance to watch it. It was a surreal experience reliving the old scenes in my memories, and man does it have some heart-wrenching scenes. I'm glad that I came across this anime by chance during my childhood, because nowadays it's definitely a show that I am particularly fond of.
This is one of my favorite animes. Someone sent it to me when it was fairly new and I watched it in three or four days because the further I got into it, the harder it was to stop and go to sleep. I had something planned that Saturday that I almost missed because I played this until I couldn't stay awake anymore, woke up, and started playing it again. Every time I can convince someone to watch it, I happily watch it with them and no one has told me they didn't like it. The only animes I would possibly consider as better than this are ones that I can watch a few episodes and enjoy whereas this has to be watched in its entirety. However, if you have the time, I can't think of anything with a better story line than this.
I grew up watching Fantastic Children with the lost Animax dub. They chose consistent VAs to work on the many anime they dubbed for English, and i can still remember the sound of Aghi, Toma, & Helga's voice. Great performance overall. The dub, music, & iconic Befort kids helped cement this anime in my memory.
I watched the series as it came out (2004-2005). It is still among my favourites. We were always looking forward to next week when a new episode would be released. I really love the music and the lyrics Everything is so thoughtful.
The big 250! Congrats! Also yeah I watched it blind too, pretty easily too since almost nobody I know has seen it lmao it was phenomenal, it's probably my favorite mystery anime for it's mystery (Monster is a mystery too but I like it for more than the mystery aspect). I should probably spread the word on it too...
The one anime that none of my anime nerd friends know anything about, and it happens to be one of my favorite I ever watched.. Thank you for discussing it!
Wow I've never seen anyone make a Fantastic Children anime review video. This has always been one of my very favorite anime ever since I first saw it many years ago, maybe in the late 2000s? It's crazy how under appreciated this series is when it's such a work of art. It's beautiful, unique, has an incredible soundtrack and a wonderfully done, well-paced ending. This series is a masterpiece!! I'm so glad you reviewed it and understood its depth.
I got hooked up by children of Befort an their mucical theme. I love the series, how manage the themes about life, dead, conexiones, how we deal with the past, loss and regret. The end was truly beautiful. And the ending song is just magical
The anime is great, good plot, good music, the characters are very human, and how everything is leading to a great and big conclusion. Nevertheless, this anime brings me sad memories, not only because of the topic about unrequited love, but also because I was dealing with one as well at the time I watched it. It reminds me those feelings I was dealing about an unrequited love I had, and sadly concluding that everything is ok as long as we share the same sky. Maybe that's why it has been under appreciated, because some expected a more happy ending to certain characters.
I've been taking a trip down memory lane and visiting all of the old AniTube channels I used to watch back in the day (I can't believe AniTube is now old enough that I can actually say that lol). Seeing so many OG AniTubers retired made me sad, but seeing another OG like yourself still making videos brought a smile to my face. Glad to see that you're still making reviews, Bob! Cheers.
I remember watching this on Animax many, many years ago and loving the ED theme song immensely. I don't remember the plot at all, time to have a re-watch, I guess!
Perhaps watching its opening will jog your memory. This video is really vague regarding plot because it's such a hard series to discuss without spoiling
I remember watching this in the mid-2000's when I was around 10-11 yrs old much like the age of the kids. For some reason, this anime stuck with me. I'm guessing it's thanks to the great soundtrack, especially the ending theme. Currently rewatching it, and I'm glad I feel the same about this series much like when I did years back. No one in my circle of friends also knows about this anime and it's a shame. Might recommend it to them if ever their backlog dwindles.
I remember as a child watching this on comcast when I could before they stopped putting new episodes on. For a while I struggled to finish this anime but it’s one I adore so much. I hope more people will take a chance to watch it.
For context on the English dub, for a few years (2006-2007ish), both Bandai & Geneon were sending some dub work on the cheap to a company in Singapore by the name of Odex (who's a major company over there) and yeah, I recall hearing years ago that this dub was one of their more infamous ones. Other anime dubbed there included Dan Doh, Shonen Onmyouji, Zipang, Clockwork Fighters: Hiwou's War & Karin (Chibi Vampire).
I was really disappointed when I fount out Hiwou's War Chronicle didn't have a proper dub. I'm still hoping that one day it gets picked up and given a new dub.
@@doodlebugfour7070 Yeah, they have made plenty of dubs for their region, that's why they're so big over there. The shows I listed though were specifically made for the US and in some cases like Karin, they even worked on parts of the DVD production (which weren't terrible but IIRC, they were missing music in the menus).
Bob, man... i really love you. I have NEVER even HEARD about this show and everything that you said sounds to me like an slightly worse Monster, and considering that in my eyes Monster is THE best anime ever made this sounds awesome.
@@bobsamurai No, I understand, but just the fact that there is a good mystery through the whole show with lots of other genres sprinkled in sounds to me that this will make me feel the same way when I first watched Monster. Also the fact that it is a complete story with an actual ending is making this show sounds superb.
You did a good review and did the best you could to be spoiler free in this video. :) I first watched most of this anime by discovering it from one of a watch anime for free On Demand channel. This was some years ago. Definitely more than 2 years ago, from what I remember. I liked what I was seeing so much that I ended up buying the entire set that includes the beautiful and emotional soundtrack on CD. Fantastic Children is not only fully of mystery and suspense. It's as you said, the twists and turns throughout the story! And recently, I've been rewatching it again.
thanks! yea it really is a fantastic series. I remember this vid got another youtuber explaining how he and his mom watched it together and they were both crying together at the end, it really is that type of anime to blow you away, and it's sadly so under appreciated. that also sounds like a nice set you have!
@@bobsamurai That's amazing of a mother and son to have both enjoyed FC very much. Yeah it's nice for a set. lol, lately the Children of Befort theme has been playing in my head on repeat while I'm at work.

it's not that old, there are anime from the 1950s that still look beautiful. artwork doesn't have a linear progression the same way tools or technology might
Finished it, it was slow at first, I thought I was gonna drop it by episode 13 it really picks up and the last 10 episodes are probably one of the best runs of episodes ever in an anime. 9/10 lived up to the hype.
