  • The treatment of aortic stenosis has been revolutionised in the past 20 years since the advent of transcutaneous treatment for replacing the aortic valve, called TAVI or TAVR.
Dr Sanjay Mehrotra, Senior Consultant Cardiology - Adult at Narayana Health City, Bommasandra, Bengaluru, shares detailed TAVI/TAVR procedure insights.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), first introduced in 2001, has dramatically improved the lives of many elderly patients. Our team has been performing this procedure for the past 12 years, specialising in treating patients with severe aortic valve disease (aortic stenosis) by inserting a valve through the leg.
This minimally invasive procedure is reserved for patients over 65 years old. The durability of the implanted valves has improved significantly over time. Patients only need to stay in the hospital for a couple of days. The procedure is performed percutaneously, using only local anaesthesia without sedation.
Aortic stenosis, characterised by the narrowing of the aortic valve, can cause shortness of breath, chest discomfort, fainting, dizziness, and ultimately heart failure. TAVI has become an excellent treatment option, offering quick recovery and minimal hospitalisation.
Experience the benefits of TAVI with Dr Sanjay for better health.
