Worst engineering I've seen in a long time. By no means does a geartrain belong in the same sealed area as a circuit board. Board should be sealed off, gearcase should be separate full of gear oil or grease.

They all do it. Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Brose, Bafang, etc. I'm pretty sure all of those companies know what they're doing give how many millions of the things they've sold, and the already massive success that Shimano, Yamaha, and Bosch have had previously manufacturing other things.
Car auto transmissions have also circuit boards inside the housing.

I have a Bosch motor and it was damaged from water ingress. Everyone said that I would have to send it to Germany to get fixed. I carefully took it apart and changed every bering and reassembled it. It works perfectly

Yes, I found a company in England that sold the complete repair kit for $147.00 and they have a warehouse in USA. To send the motor to Germany was like $1500.00. I just took lots of pictures with my smartphone and very carefully disassembled it. Now they have a kit called mud stopper and I put that on and it stops the part that lets water in

Dont mess around with chips and mods. Usually what kills them. If not it'd be replaced under warranty. Shimano makes great ebike parts..

It’s called new bike
Bearing play transfered to gears allowing excess movement between the meshing and that allowed damage and accelerated wear to happen
One might think Shimano is able to produce a gear that is strong enough for this little Motor.
I mean there are motorcycles with 100 horsepower and more and they hold up
It's almost like small gears with modestly high rpm's and toque need proper lubrication and not just some grease. If they put this into its own small form factor gearbox with proper gear oil it would last much longer

Thank goodness for people like you i wouldn't know where to start, amazing at seeing something broke and telling myself oh i can fix that then i take it all apart not remembering how to put ot back together and i end up disposing of it.

What do service manuals say about gear box maintenance on this type of motors ? Following the rules shoud be the key to avoid premature gear damage like this one.
That's clearly designed to induce a point of weakness in order to sell motors.
So is the fix just replacing that damaged part at the end?
And was water getting in the original culprit for the defect?

Cuando un producto es complicado para hacer mantenimiento está mal diseñado, a esto agregarle:
1- La electrónica junto a la caja de engranaje, está mal.
2- La caja de engranaje no tiene grasa, es un problema muy común, debería tener aceite pero no se comprometen con la estanqueidad, la grasa se corre a los laterales y los engranajes trabajan como sino tuvieran lubricacion.
3- Los engranajes no son de materiales adecuados, muy blandos, no usan acero y engranajes de bronce como corresponde.

You can do one thing.. cover the pcb with resin carefully like insulation and full fill grease on gares. Hope it will work 👍

Lube/gear grease missing- this means that you should dissasenble motor when new and put gear grease inside if you wish normal lifecicle...

Shimano does not offer individual gears or spare parts for the motor. The entire engine must be replaced.

Apparently not much happens to the motors. The gearbox OTOH, that's toast.
@@ferrumignis it's easier to bust a motor of this size compared to a 1000w gearless hub motor
@@evronetwork Hub motors add a considerable amount of rotational mass and unsprung mass, far from ideal in something as light as a bicycle. A mid drive also benefits from the torque multiplication of the chain & sprocket variable gear ratios, whereas a hub motor is fixed. OTOH a hub motor is simpler and lower cost.
@@ferrumignis A hub motor doesn't put strain in the chain or the gears ...also if you need real power well a hub motor is the obvious solution(you can also use a throttle so no peddling at all)
@@evronetwork Once you can make a hub motor light enough that it doesn't hugely add to unsprung weight and moment of inertia I'll agree. Right now its like attaching a boat anchor to your wheel.
Why did they use helical gears? Not very efficiënt. Maybe to reduce noise....

I've always known Shimano to make exceptionally durable parts but that doesn't appear to be an issue one would chalk up to user error. Anyone else encountered this same problem?
I had exactly the same problem. And Shimano said it won’t cover the cost of repairs because the motor was 4 years old. I had less than 6000km on it. I’m pissed at them. It’s a material problem not a user problem

Warranty gone. Check with Shimano if it's still covered, and send it back for assessment before you go Rambo tactical on it. Most of the time, they will replace it as a "goodwill replacement"
very surprising to see a helical gear off anything do this..what is it made of? It seems like an overpower issue up. Maybe an amperage jump?
I dont hate e-bikes they seem very fun and interesting to use, if i could i have have one, but wow they seem very complex to repair, in comparison with my 1990 fully rigid bike 😅

Caberia separar está placa eletrônica e colocar um lubrificante mais eficiente. Quem sabe um óleo ( se tiver vedação suficiente).
i dont trust the gears im no pro but i have over 3,000 miles on a cheap amazon rear wheel kit The things are built pretty good for the price point . spokes only thing that needed replacing .

Good luck finding spare parts AFAIK OEM treat the motor unit as a single part to be repaired by replacement.

The conversation was about the lack of knowledge of those who claim you can't get a workout on an e-bike. The facts, which I cited and can provide more evidence of, don't support that notion. But you're obviously an intelligent guy who likes to keep his mind free of all those annoying facts.
So here's the deal - I'd love to race you, because there are only two possible outcomes: 1) Your friends will laugh at you when I beat you, or 2) they will laugh at you a very different way when the see you challenging a seventy-year-old man. I'm fine with either outcome.
BTW - saw pics of Julian Alaphilippe bombing around on off days on a TrekTurbo Creo SL (complete with yellow bar tape and bottle cage to match his jersey) a few years ago. I guess he's not in very good shape either...

а где смазка-то? Смазки ноль, да хрен по вдоль. Без смазки долго не проработает. И плата рядом с механической частью не способствует долгой работе.
