Nice Video. Is it possible to upgrade only the motor and use the old display with adapter an calbe?

Wow, great job! I was thinking of making the same change but from an e8000 to an ep801, do you think it's possible??. Thank you very much and best regards!!
From purely a power output perspective it is not worthwhile the power output of the EP8 is virtually the same as the E8000, The benefits would be the increased adjustability of the EP8 through e-tube or the quieter motor.
Great video - thinking this may be an option for me if/when the E8000 motor finally gives up the ghost. Question: do you have a parts list / links for them all?
Hi Mate we have been meaning to put a parts list together below is a brief list of what we used. Will be slightly different for each bike due to wire lengths and adapter needs. CRANKS FCM8150 165 EW-AD305 Adapter EW-SD300 Electric Wire Drive Cover - DC-EP800-G Cycle Computer - SC-EM800 EP8 - IDUEP800A SWITCH - SW-EM800-L DRIVE UNIT COVER DC-EP800
I’m also interested in the parts list. I’m planning to do this conversion on a 2019 Commencal Meta Power and I’m hoping to reuse as much wiring, screen and controller if possible. Sounds like I may need some wiring adapters, cranks and a left side plastic cover. Shame the old cranks can’t work, seems unnecessary to not make them backwards compatible with E8000/E7000 cranks
I am also thinking of a swap. I have a Focus jam 2 with broken motor (13.000km on it). All bearings are dead and even the housing of the motor. Will swap it to a EP8
This video has definitely struck a chord with me... My very similar 2019 Merida E160-800 is in the bike shop for diagnostiocs and/or repair with an E010 error code... if the motor is Kaput, I'll be asking the bike shop what the difference in price is between a replacement E8000 or an EP8, assuming both are available in UK... I know there will be an additional cost with the mode switch, display and cranks
@@ogrbrg I was getting the e010 error too. I boiled it down to power connector corrosion. I scrapped the pins and squirted some dialectic grease in the plug. I also changed all the bearings inside the motor but that's unrelated. Anyway, it's back to life and running smoother than ever.
@@MrAzeker thanks for the reply. Did you have problems with the connector to your battery or to the motor? Since this comment i bought a 2-hand Brand new motor and installed that on my bike.
I sold my old e8000 motor as it went the e010 torque sensor error, I have the program configuration files for a new motor can i use thee old files from my old motor for an ep8? Im dicing with putting an EP8 in my bike
Should be possible, However Shimano are saying they will Brick EP801 Motors if unlocked and likely will be a fair wait until there is a solution for unlocking that motor.
It should work with the old display and switch you would need to purchase the correct adapters to connect the older style wires to the new smaller ones.
Great video, thankyou!! Was wondering whether this was even possible. I'm thinking of doing something simile for my aging e8000, could you give a ballpark figure for the total price and where to source an EP8?
Roughly $2500 AUD for the EP8 swap. FYI the EP8 is not anymore powerful then the e8000. But does feel smoother and quieter with better tunability through the etube app.
@@obzelite See our test ep8 vs e8000 & other motors ruclips.net/video/nyDatqq6xRw/видео.html in our testing we have found there to be no significant power difference. Agree 85nm should be better but in the end it's just a number on a spec sheet the real life results speak for themselves.
Great vid.My e8000 is dead.i have a focus jam2 2019.I was going to just order another but now wondering if this ep8 is possible.Only thing is my jam2 has a 378w battery...how would the range be affected??.drastic reduction going from 70nm to 85??im in the uk and cant find ANY links to parts for this or the ep8 itself so any links appreciated.thanks!!
There is a mild range reduction when swapping to the ep8 and there is actually hardly any noticeable differences in power. When testing we could find no meaningful power increase. It is smoother, Quieter apart from the rattle, and has better adjustability in etube.
Hi Im from the Philippines, Can you help because I have a Ducati ebike tk011. My problem is my engine is so noisy and rattling. Can you help me what will I do? Thank you
@@EpiceBikes have you had any experience with Norco sight 2020 vlt with E7000? Norco advise me that E8000 is direct bolt on with no need to change controllers. Which means that the Ep8 should also bolt straight in as it also has the same bolt mounts (i would need cranks and control unit etc). Would you know if the EP8 would fit the norco sight vlt 2020 ?
@@jonty3000 We have recently had someone try and fit an EP8 in the Norco Sight and they were unable to fit it. The e8000 should be no problem as they are also fitted to the Norco bikes of that generation.
Got a 2020 Commencal AM 29 with E8000 and I was asking if I can replace it with EP8 that is on sale on their website. The support said, " They have the same attachment points but the structure of the drive unit is different." What do they mean by this? So on this video of yours, you just replace it with right cables and display right? and you are still using the same chain and lock ring?
Looks like the crank arms are different so is that why you installed new ones? Why on earth did Shimano feel the need to change those cables (and crank arms for that matter) other than making us all have to source new ones...oh I think I answered my question, lol. Is any of this even available in the States? I have a 2018 jam2 and will eventually want to do this. But I am hoping Shimano comes to their senses and fixes the issue with clunking or rattling under no load, downhill, etc. Noises like that are totally unacceptable on a mtn bike in my opinion and deal breakers for any bike using an EP8 right now. Love the new EP8 but HATE the noise it makes.
Im pretty sure the crank arms upgrade is just for shorter ones as i did that on my e160 for more clearance. I think I will do the switches but motor is fine for now.
If you have a dirt bike you can buy a box of bolts etc for $20, in any number of sizes and styles. Bicycles aren't so easy. I want 4 stem clamp bolts, despite all the mountain bikes in my local shop using the exact same bolts it's difficult to buy them. Arrh.
My E8000 in my Commencal Meta Power has just died. My bike mechanic wants to replace with an EP8. Is the computer in the actual display? If so can I use the existing computer/display? I see you said I can use the existing switch. Thanks
Great Video Lachlan made it look pretty easy I’d like to see a list of parts needs and total cost of motor upgrade
About 1300€ in Germany, self upgrade...

Great video what brand mud guards r they ?
Where can we find these components for the update and can you tell us their names, and can we update any bike like bmc and wilier?
Shimano won't provide motors aftermarket in the UK. 😭
why did you change the display and switch? just for the look? Because the old ones would be ok with the new motor....
Is that right?
So you only have to change the motor itself?
Nice work lads 🙌
When are we seeing the folllow up? Toying with this option vs new bike and there’s not much out there that would be considered a massive upgrade
