Worst engineering I've seen in a long time. By no means does a geartrain belong in the same sealed area as a circuit board. Board should be sealed off, gearcase should be separate full of gear oil or grease.
They all do it. Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Brose, Bafang, etc. I'm pretty sure all of those companies know what they're doing give how many millions of the things they've sold, and the already massive success that Shimano, Yamaha, and Bosch have had previously manufacturing other things.
I have a Bosch motor and it was damaged from water ingress. Everyone said that I would have to send it to Germany to get fixed. I carefully took it apart and changed every bering and reassembled it. It works perfectly

I just took lots of pictures with my smartphone and very carefully disassembled it. Now they have a kit called mud stopper and I put that on and it stops the part that lets water in
One might think Shimano is able to produce a gear that is strong enough for this little Motor. I mean there are motorcycles with 100 horsepower and more and they hold up
It's almost like small gears with modestly high rpm's and toque need proper lubrication and not just some grease. If they put this into its own small form factor gearbox with proper gear oil it would last much longer

What do service manuals say about gear box maintenance on this type of motors ? Following the rules shoud be the key to avoid premature gear damage like this one.

@@evronetwork Hub motors add a considerable amount of rotational mass and unsprung mass, far from ideal in something as light as a bicycle. A mid drive also benefits from the torque multiplication of the chain & sprocket variable gear ratios, whereas a hub motor is fixed. OTOH a hub motor is simpler and lower cost.
@@ferrumignis A hub motor doesn't put strain in the chain or the gears ...also if you need real power well a hub motor is the obvious solution(you can also use a throttle so no peddling at all)
@@evronetwork Once you can make a hub motor light enough that it doesn't hugely add to unsprung weight and moment of inertia I'll agree. Right now its like attaching a boat anchor to your wheel.
I've always known Shimano to make exceptionally durable parts but that doesn't appear to be an issue one would chalk up to user error. Anyone else encountered this same problem?
I had exactly the same problem. And Shimano said it won’t cover the cost of repairs because the motor was 4 years old. I had less than 6000km on it. I’m pissed at them. It’s a material problem not a user problem
Warranty gone. Check with Shimano if it's still covered, and send it back for assessment before you go Rambo tactical on it. Most of the time, they will replace it as a "goodwill replacement"
I dont hate e-bikes they seem very fun and interesting to use, if i could i have have one, but wow they seem very complex to repair, in comparison with my 1990 fully rigid bike 😅
i dont trust the gears im no pro but i have over 3,000 miles on a cheap amazon rear wheel kit The things are built pretty good for the price point . spokes only thing that needed replacing .

E-bike riders rode their bikes more frequently - they were more likely to use their e-bikes for errands that took a bit too long, or were a bit too far for conventional cyclists, who would default to other transportation instead of riding. They also tended to ride further. Maybe the genius move in your case would have been to actually look these things up.

It's almost like small gears with modestly high rpm's and toque need proper lubrication and not just some grease. If they put this into its own small form factor gearbox with proper gear oil it would last much longer

Shimano does not offer individual gears or spare parts for the motor. The entire engine must be replaced.

Why did they use helical gears? Not very efficiënt. Maybe to reduce noise....

а где смазка-то? Смазки ноль, да хрен по вдоль. Без смазки долго не проработает. И плата рядом с механической частью не способствует долгой работе.
