no worries, I have a lot of friends who get the same audio issues in their vids a lot- it's easy to fix on the viewer's end just by turning on the mono audio setting, so it's not a huge issue.
To me weirdcore is often low-effort surrealism thrown together in Picsart but I’ve also seen some that I genuinely really like. These designs are a lot more put-together
Just realized my weirdcore OCs are quite to a little bit original, we got: -emo eye with crown eyelashes -lampshade on the head man -doll that’s possessed by a creature -punk boy skateboard head who can use his head as a real skateboard (its detachable) -H A N D M A N -candy head

I think the issue with Weirdcore OCs being a bit samey is largely just a result of the fact that they’re all drawing on the same aesthetic and not much else. People like the feeling and the visuals evoked by Weirdcore but may struggle with capturing that in their own style, and thus end up over relying on tropes and references. There’s also the issue that comes with TRYING to make something that is weird. If all you want to do is say “hey look this is weird” then you’re probably going to fall back on the very classic and psychedelic idea of weird. It’s just what comes to mind! To differentiate your guys from the crowd and make them feel more like your own, it’s good to do the sort of thing you see here and draw on different references in conjunction with the Weirdcore ones. Integrate some of your other interests, play with very literal imagery when expressing personality, try and subvert the current standard set by the aesthetic, implement things just for the joke of it! It’s true there are no original ideas, but your art will always be strange and unique if you put more of yourself and what you love into it.
Object-heads can easily be used as normal fun characters (i have PLENTY), so seeing how you made these designs lean into the creepy side that encompasses weirdcore is real neat!!! All of these designs are real epic in general, so major kudos to you!!! :D

in my opinion, weirdcore is a hard aesthetic to capture in an OC because half the aesthetic is the liminal spaces, and the desolate feeling that comes with them. A character cannot really make you feel that way unless you try to make it into more of an entity, or something else that does not feel human. I really love this video though, your little character designs turned out really cool :]
If any of you want inspiration for a vintage weirdcore look, I'd highly recommend you watch Jan Švankmajer's Alice, which is a really creepy take on Alice in Wonderland that was basically weirdcore before weirdcore. Watching it feels like a fever dream, it has to be one of my favorite movies.
I like the idea of the heads focussing on the person and not being the usual eyes. I have made a lot of characters having their heads be based of of their personality. I have a little universe thing(not gonna get into detail) but basically everyone in the universe is dead and their heads reflect how they died. I gave one of them a cone head and they died to a car so on and so forth. It's really fun and gives your characters a lot of personality when you use the heads to reflect something :3
Thank you algorithm I've yet to reach into the weird core aesthetic myself or actually look at many characters but I believe inspiration from such a specific and recognisable aesthetic could also be useful in general character design. Weirdcore is one of my fav aesthetics cause of the vibrant colors and the kinda vintage style that people add, its just gr8 and i feel happy seeing it.
This is delightful, weirdcore has always been one of those aesthetics that I love on a conceptual level, but could never figure out how to translate into art - I love your approach to it, especially the more abstract designs!
When I make characters for weird core I often lean into humanoid with something off like in a dream or a drawing of a kid because weird core is often something normal changed a bit off or blocking out something, so last weird core character I made was a talking pot you have to change the plant of each time it’s done growing with a warning sign saying not to on its face and a normal clown that when you try to get rid of the makeup it doesn’t go away until you realize it’s just their face like how a child expects out of a clown, not a human just a clown and the pot being like when your hallucinating and think something is moving when it’s not
somehow this video has made me realize that a lot of my characters that i thought were just some grotesque glimpse into my inner psyche would probably just be considered some form of weirdcore. huh. still gonna go make a new one tho.
EEEEE I LOVE THESE DESIGNS SO MUCH!! I actually have an old weirdcore OC of my own, I forgot their name but they're basically like an anthro cat with cream colored fur, a red sweater, and a mushroom hat. They're more tied to the dreamcore subgenre, and they can use a mix of water and air related magics to reference how many dreamcore images swap the places of water and the sky or have sky or water appear in places they shouldn't. They're sort of like a little adventurer and guide, mostly just exploring their world and helping anyone who needs help exploring or finding certain places. I'm considering giving them a bit of a revamp, this video gave me a lot of good ideas for it!
I actually already incorporate these elements in designing weirdcore inspired characters honestly Mostly used Digital Circus and Ena for inspiration Then actual clown stuff, Cubism, and other sorts of abstract art
This is very useful! This was not only useful for the side characters but also very good for inspiration for the environment of my comic im making since it mostly takes place in a dream which is supposed to have weird core/dreamcore vibes. 😄 thank you!

Now that you said that most people just slap on an object for a head and the body is literally a photo of a body with an outfit you made me think about it and than I had an idea that for a weird-core oc you can actually make it weirder by drawing only the body and then everything else being photo shopped and a few other accesories drawn just to give it that feeling of it being more surreal

Yeeeeesssss!!!! I'm working on making a weird/dream/kid/clowncore universe to potentially make it into a game, and this was JUST the thing I needed!! I've been struggling with creating even one oc that doesn't look so, for lack of better words, boring; and I still struggle with getting the aesthetics down pact and cohesive but still keeping the weirdcore aesthetic. Think Animal Crossing, Welcome Home, and classic pixel/low poly horror games-and squish them together; that's what I'm going for. And as a newer person to such aesthetics, I struggle to come up with odd looking ocs that aren't too cluttered, on top of having aphantasia. So, finding this video helped me a TON!

Sorry for long comment:') i have a lot of ocs but the one i use the most has a teapot on her head and really frilly pink dress with ruffles and poofy sleeves with thigh high socks (one is striped and one is lower with stars) her head is detachable and you can use it as a functional teapot (dont drink the tea its a little funky i tried) shes a perfectionist but her design is really aysmetrical to show a bit of her personality and she has a lot of different bows and gems all over her design and shes a hoarder

O my fckin god I love your designs and spins on Weirdcore characters! Though I lean more towards the side of Dreamcore, I would like to share some of my oc’s and their general concepts. (I’m autistic and love taking inspiration from my weird wacky dreams and childhood memories) - *Smiley* They’re based on that one Japanese song going ‘have you seen smiley?’ And No-face from spirited away. They’re very friendly, but looks like a tall, fully cloaked entity with arcade claws for hands and a big creepy yellow smiley mask. - *Nemori* Name is pronounced similarly to ‘memory’, as they’re based on the vague memories you may or may not have had of a childhood playground friend you don’t remember the face of. They have no clear gender, short black hair, a yellow shirt, overalls with some flower and smiley face patches, black and white striped socks and red Crocs. Their ‘face’ looks like shattered porcelain. Also a very friendly entity, and the best friend/playmate of Smiley. - *Clock-faced Lilith* This fella is pretty self-explanatory, though they appear more like a cartoony cat mascot with long antennae and a stripey tail. Inspired by old cartoons and the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. Whenever a dreamer wakes up in the Dreamscape, they’ll take them on journeys throughout its myriad of dimensions. The clock handles of their face turn really slowly, and if you touch them, they’ll speed up and you almost always wake up. - *Daisy* Remember how I said I was autistic? Daisy was inspired by my autism therapy experience. She’s a giant soft caterpillar-esque being with a collar ressembling daisy petals, along with one on her tail, and is pretty colorful yet soft, like a fidget toy! She’s as soft as a pillow and is able to understand your deepest feelings no matter how vaguely you express them. Autism therapy helped make me understand myself better and bring me down to earth. It tamed my inner creature.
Ok i watched the video now and- 3rd design in the creature segment gave me the last PUNCH in inspiration for one of my oc's I didn't know this manipulative little fuck needed weird core in his life but oh my lord Thank you for making this I would've never gotten the right push for this character without this!
alright, yk why it looks like zooble from TADC? thats because abstractism is gooseworx's main artstyle in works that mainly belong to them. zooble was the one character that gooseworx got to make in direct relation to themselves when helping with the series! [i think they did] on that note, yeah. gooseworx is the ultimate god of *weirdcore.*
I just want to say thank you, this video and a mix of other factors lead me to finally creating my own weirdcore oc. I always had trouble trying to make my own, falling into some of the tropes you pointed out and not liking it enough to keep the character. Now I have HeCH, a hive mind of sentient balloons that took over the circus they were sold at and became the ring master
The first OC I had that could be considered as weirdcore was made when I was a kid. I haven't had time to remake them yet, but they had a pitch black face with multiple eyes, but they're self conscious about it so they cover it with a bucket that has a little smiley face on it(i don't know how they could see) (I'm pretty sure i got inspired by a tiktocker who wore a bucket?) Their name is cornflower and they love taking care of their garden. They have little black horns and a tail. They had a strained relationship with their parents and and CF died before they could make amends, although i don't remember how. CF was reincarnated, but in another world. They hoped they could find a way to see their family again, and they're extremely peaceful and doesn't hold grudges because they don't want anything similar happening again. Also- an idea i have for a game is a weird visual novel like game with object heads that are unusual, like pillow or milk jug. It appears as a funny comedic game that makes no sense and has cartoon logic until it starts turning disturbing and into a horror game
Now that you mentioned it, it reminds me of my weirdcore OCs from some time ago, more specifically the OCs that I made during 2021-2022, they're lost to time by now, but I remembered one of them being a Christmas caroller, having the object head of a red Christmas ornament, she was named Holly. I might have to find the sprites again, or I could do it from scratch...
Yo I love all there designs they look absolutely phenomenal, I made a couple weirdcore oc’s last month some more weird than others, but there are two in particular The one I made on the fourth and the one I made on the 12th, the one I made on the 4th has bear plush arms and legs, with a skeleton head, and a gumball machine as it’s chest, and the one I made on the 12th was a TV had an animatronic character that had a alien theme, I both designs very much :)
your vids seem so fun! And this was sofun to watch!! you know what you were talking about and I agreed with it wholeheartedly. I made a whole art piece that was based on weirdcore/kidcore! Its on my youtube but I made y own characters each trying to have a theme or make them organic.

you should be able to fix it setting you audio to mono instead of stereo so its the same in both ears, any decent audio editing app can do that 👍

I'm working on making a weird/dream/kid/clowncore universe to potentially make it into a game, and this was JUST the thing I needed!! I've been struggling with creating even one oc that doesn't look so, for lack of better words, boring; and I still struggle with getting the aesthetics down pact and cohesive but still keeping the weirdcore aesthetic. Think Animal Crossing, Welcome Home, and classic pixel/low poly horror games-and squish them together; that's what I'm going for. And as a newer person to such aesthetics, I struggle to come up with odd looking ocs that aren't too cluttered, on top of having aphantasia. So, finding this video helped me a TON!

Sorry for long comment:') i have a lot of ocs but the one i use the most has a teapot on her head and really frilly pink dress with ruffles and poofy sleeves with thigh high socks (one is striped and one is lower with stars) her head is detachable and you can use it as a functional teapot (dont drink the tea its a little funky i tried) shes a perfectionist but her design is really aysmetrical to show a bit of her personality and she has a lot of different bows and gems all over her design and shes a hoarder
I’m not into weirdcore, but as an artist who wants to take a more surreal approach, I really appreciate this video. I think it’s gonna help me plan for artfight (if i do do artfight this year lol) so thank you!

Though I lean more towards the side of Dreamcore, I would like to share some of my oc’s and their general concepts. (I’m autistic and love taking inspiration from my weird wacky dreams and childhood memories)
- *Smiley*
They’re based on that one Japanese song going ‘have you seen smiley?’ And No-face from spirited away.
They’re very friendly, but looks like a tall, fully cloaked entity with arcade claws for hands and a big creepy yellow smiley mask.
- *Nemori*
Name is pronounced similarly to ‘memory’, as they’re based on the vague memories you may or may not have had of a childhood playground friend you don’t remember the face of.
They have no clear gender, short black hair, a yellow shirt, overalls with some flower and smiley face patches, black and white striped socks and red Crocs. Their ‘face’ looks like shattered porcelain.
Also a very friendly entity, and the best friend/playmate of Smiley.
- *Clock-faced Lilith*
This fella is pretty self-explanatory, though they appear more like a cartoony cat mascot with long antennae and a stripey tail. Inspired by old cartoons and the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. Whenever a dreamer wakes up in the Dreamscape, they’ll take them on journeys throughout its myriad of dimensions. The clock handles of their face turn really slowly, and if you touch them, they’ll speed up and you almost always wake up.
- *Daisy*
Remember how I said I was autistic? Daisy was inspired by my autism therapy experience. She’s a giant soft caterpillar-esque being with a collar ressembling daisy petals, along with one on her tail, and is pretty colorful yet soft, like a fidget toy! She’s as soft as a pillow and is able to understand your deepest feelings no matter how vaguely you express them. Autism therapy helped make me understand myself better and bring me down to earth. It tamed my inner creature.

alright, yk why it looks like zooble from TADC? thats because abstractism is gooseworx's main artstyle in works that mainly belong to them. zooble was the one character that gooseworx got to make in direct relation to themselves when helping with the series! [i think they did]

I just want to say thank you, this video and a mix of other factors lead me to finally creating my own weirdcore oc. I always had trouble trying to make my own, falling into some of the tropes you pointed out and not liking it enough to keep the character.
Now I have HeCH, a hive mind of sentient balloons that took over the circus they were sold at and became the ring master

The first OC I had that could be considered as weirdcore was made when I was a kid. I haven't had time to remake them yet, but they had a pitch black face with multiple eyes, but they're self conscious about it so they cover it with a bucket that has a little smiley face on it(i don't know how they could see) (I'm pretty sure i got inspired by a tiktocker who wore a bucket?) Their name is cornflower and they love taking care of their garden. They have little black horns and a tail. They had a strained relationship with their parents and and CF died before they could make amends, although i don't remember how. CF was reincarnated, but in another world. They hoped they could find a way to see their family again, and they're extremely peaceful and doesn't hold grudges because they don't want anything similar happening again.
Also- an idea i have for a game is a weird visual novel like game with object heads that are unusual, like pillow or milk jug. It appears as a funny comedic game that makes no sense and has cartoon logic until it starts turning disturbing and into a horror game

Now that you mentioned it, it reminds me of my weirdcore OCs from some time ago, more specifically the OCs that I made during 2021-2022, they're lost to time by now, but I remembered one of them being a Christmas caroller, having the object head of a red Christmas ornament, she was named Holly.
I might have to find the sprites again, or I could do it from scratch...

I made a couple weirdcore oc’s last month some more weird than others, but there are two in particular The one I made on the fourth and the one I made on the 12th, the one I made on the 4th has bear plush arms and legs, with a skeleton head, and a gumball machine as it’s chest, and the one I made on the 12th was a TV had an animatronic character that had a alien theme, I both designs very much :)

I saw this video and immediately had an idea. The oc has an allagator or crockadile mouth (only the muzzle) with an egg with an eye on it floating in its mouth. The rest will be lanky. I think they'd be like "you're lost, I can tell. Come with me. I'll protect you." Ya'know
