I finally had to leave due to mental health issues and I am trying to learn that there is nothing wrong with slow and steady and take time to think things through. Sam, I have said it a million times on the show and I will say it again. We are never in a hurry when it comes to woodworking. This is the one hobby where you can take your time and appreciate each and every step. From the rough cut to the finish scraping to the application of the finish, there is never a rush to get it done. If someone is rushing to do woodworking, they are doing it for the wrong reasons and it usually involved money. I get a lot of criticism for my "pace" of the show and there are a lot of people that don't like that pace but if that is the case, then maybe my show isn't for them. It's for good people like yourself who want to learn something and take their time doing it. I spend two days a week in my shop and those days are usually eight hours long or more. Some days I get a lot done and other days not so much but I thoroughly enjoy each day in the shop regardless of what my progress is. Set your own pace and stick to it. If that is what makes you comfortable and makes you enjoy yourself, then I say do it. There's no one in the world that can you are wrong when you are doing something for yourself at your own pace. I was taken back with how many tools that I have that you and I also have. The only thing is I never think of them just use them when I need to. I am an ex-engineer so some of my engineering tools double as woodworking tools, My spacer blocks are precision ground to .0001" because I was a Precision Grinder by trade. INCRA T-rule I have been using that for a number of years now and the old egg better drill still gets use sometimes. 4 score years is taking its toll and things take longer now. My daughter asked for a 5 Foot Tall Nutcracker no rush take your time sort of thing, can I have it for Christmas touch. I have Started. She liked the 18" ones (4 I made 2 for her and 2 for Mum) You can't say no to a daughter can you.
The nutcracker sound very interesting. My family is obsessed with nutcracker and have several dozen. When you're done, I'd love to see some photos. There's a very friendly RUclipsr who has been known to share photos of projects submitted by his fans.

This is a good video Kenny, I have a fair few tools but perhaps for bigger builds so far. Your comments at the end helped me to realise I can use other things for measuring smaller things. Thanks for the great ideas.

Very interesting, there are some that I really would like. I've started making some toys for my grandson/Godson and other little ones and not so little ones in my family. Thanks for the inspiration.
Great tool advice! I have most all of the tools you had on your show. ( don't have a block plane) Not for model building, but because when making whirligig hubs and some other parts they are handy. Wax paper is a big item for me when doing glue-ups. I always have a roll on the bench. I made free-flight balsa planes in grade school...all the way to u-control in college. I also like having an architect triangle scale ruler and drafting triangles just in case I feel the need to change a pattern lol, even my own that I want to revise. An Exacto type knife set is sometimes helpful. For viewers in the U.S., Micro-Mark is a company that specializes in scale model building tools. They have micro hand and power tools. They really have a wide assortment. They are in New Jersey. I have some of their tools, high quality at a decent price. Good customer service too. I also have a center square that helps with finding the center on dowels. You are right that you don't need fancy tools, but it does make life easier lol. Just build up a little at a time. Gosh! I could add more that is in my arsenal lol. Beginners don't really need all that I've collected either. Enjoyed, take care!

You mentioned the miter box, I feel like a miter box and a hand saw is way more accurate and easier to hit the mark. I did a small crown molding job, I had a cheap miter saw that I could not get to cut the miters at the correct angle. But a cheap hardware store miter box and saw made me a believer. Also the Veritas stuff seems to be incredible quality. One day I plan on getting a Veritas plane
There are just some things that are better done by hand Randy. Sometimes there is no substitute. I currently have 3 Veritas planes and I wouldn't trade them. I love them. I want more but will have to wait and save up a little first. Thanks for tuning in and for your input on the show.
