Somebody WAKE UP George Will. The "Conservative" dogma train, he bought a ticket for, has already left the station. It's now called "Trumpism" dogma. The poor guy has been left sitting on the platform...mournfully looking up and down the tracks for a new Conservative train..that will never come.
You clowns have no idea what the conservative platform is. Certainly not Trumpism. That is laughable. Trump is an opportunist. He is more a democrat than a republican. And where does that leave you? In a cult of personality. A big fraud. Truly pathetic.
I'm not a fan of his politics, but the man defies the binary nature of politics and thinks for himself. I appreciate his perspective, even though I usually disagree. We need more nuanced dialogue in this country, and George helps provide that.
I agree. I disagree with him on most things, I suspect, but I do respect that he arrives at and defends his ideas with clear, rational thinking and not blind allegiance to a religious text or unwavering dedication to a political party. He seeks to have dialogue with the other side, not merely shout them down, fearmonger about them, or spread lies and hyperbole. He's a thinker and understands nuance. We need more like that on all sides.
@N Care to explain? I disagree with your assumptions entirely, but happy to hear you defend them. For me, I see a run away purity test culture where groups are all too willing to make people they disagree with so hyperbolically "other" that it is easy to attack, degrade, dismiss, and deride them. The loudest voices are focused on preaching black & white statements to their own choirs and show little care in even seeking to understand the other side's thinking or admitting that for many issues, there are gray positions and not everything is all black or all white. That's all "nuance" means most of the time--a willingness to admit the gray exists at all and speak to it and seek to understand it rather than happily talking past it and doing the whole "you are with me or against me" thing. Speaking with nuance is a willingness to seek compromise and common ground.
I do not completely agree with George Will, but I respect the man and his intelligent view of the world. Being a moderate, I find Will a fair person that most people can have a discussion with. Most conservatives want to attack you now, with Will you learn something positive even if you disagree. America is better off with Will.
I had dinner with George Will 30 years ago, while I was a student at UC Berkeley and working for an investment banking firm in San Francisco. He spoke at our annual conference and attended with this three children. My job was to escort them around and he could not have been nicer and his kids were awesome. They had me sing the Cal fight song on our way to dinner! We stayed in touch, tho like many things, that waned as the years went on. This is a great reminder for me to send him a message. You should also send someone a message you haven't talk to in a while!
Sorry, but no matter how nice this guy was to little white kids he supported one of the most bigoted disgusting campaigns and policies in the last 100 years. There isnt a speck of patriotic blood in this man and never was. He was about dividing the country based on skin color and ushered in Reaganomics which destroyed the country faster than any known empire in history. George Will is a serious racist and sought to roll back civil rights legislation like his hero REAGAN.
I lean towards conservative democrat, there's not much that I agree with any classic republican with, let's not even mention the current variation of that party. That being said, I've always admired George Will, he is a man of great integrity and insight. This country need more people like him on both parties to straighten things out.
Will defines conservatism much the way Edmund Burke would. He sees conservatism as the preservation and application of enduring principles that take into account the lessons of history and the truths of human nature. Thus, it is incomprehensible that Will would advocate the election of a Democratic president who shares none of these. That presidential power would be used to continue to undue American foundational principles. In my mind, this makes Will a fool, who, though appearing to be eminently logical, is driven by his emotions and hatred for the lack of refinement displayed by Trump.
The fascist form of socialism, i.e. the merger of the corporation and the state, has become so ingrained into the fabric of conservatism that people like George Will have no clue as to what a real conservative actually might be. The more democratic you are in reality the more conservative you are also. That only makes sense if you define your terms by the root meaning of each political concept and know that each idea's precise definition is essential to the whole meaning of a democratic constitutional government !!!!
George Will is an eloquent, humble, humorous and truly stable genius... and it's refreshing to hear him speak at a time when those in the US and UK of a populist persuasion seem to have the upper hand. Sadly we in the UK are about to have our senses assaulted by that crass, buffoon of a president over the next three days. I look forward to the day when normal service is resumed.
That crass, buffoon of a President will see to it that the UK pays it's fair share of defense spending and plays fair when engaging in trade with America. Suck it up, ducky!💥💥💥💥
I read Mr. Will , and before she died, Meg Greenfield, for decades. Both these political journalists, these intellectual luminaries (while not always agreeing with either) have been, in my view, always eminently fair, balanced and never minced words. Glad that Mr. Will is still around to gives us his candid, well-considered and much valued opinions.
juscurious Sorry you have so much anger against Will. You write a very cogent comment - great to see there are still a few articulate writers around. I will disagree about Will creating Trump. This "me, my, mine" culture we currently have in the USA spawned him and his ilk. And since critical reasoning has been largely abandoned, and has been mostly replaced here by the notion that "I deserve whatever I can get," all of us collectively are now paying the price for rampant, self-centered, self-aggrandizing ignorance. This intellectual and emotional darkness informs our present government and, alas, over a third of our populace
He is right - the republican party has not been conservative for some time. Ironically, Trump had made it more conservative in some specific areas, but overall still a mess of a party.

Dear Mr Koppel and Mr Will, Thank you Mr Kopell for your dedicated service in your profession that today is in upheaval and disarray. Thank you for your ability to get to the heart of every issue I have had the pleasure to hear you discuss. Thank you Mr Will for your excellence in writing English and making us all see the great diversity and descriptive powers of the English - American - language and your great devotion to getting the truth as you see it out to the people. If I may in this small way try to get a point across to both of you it is this. No man would ever allow the government to decide on any issue concerning his body. How can anyone in 2020 - I’m being hopeful here … Mr Will … how can anyone dictate to a woman in America or around the world what to do with her body? I am shocked to see the lessons of the 1960’s have gone right over conservative men’s heads. Individualism is a sacred right. No one should have a say over someone else’s body. The translation is this: We judge you so incompetent, Ms, Miss, Mrs, ec., we judge you so incompetent to know what is good for your body that we are going to make that decision for you. Oh, and by the way, I’m a man and no one is going to tell me what to do with my body. For the good of the Republic and for women’s rights in America and around the world, can we please stop telling women what to do with their bodies? They know what’s best because they rely on their instinct and their intuition, something most men don’t pay much attention to. I am appalled that someone of your stature, Mr Will, could ever be in favor of intervening on the choice of a woman. It doesn0t fit with your intellect. Long live freedom of the press and long live women's rights. Women: stand up for your rights!
David Te'Kannon I guess individualism is a sacred right for everybody except the babies in the womb. You say we shouldn't make decisions for women about what to do with their bodies, but apparently it's ok to make a decision for that human being inside the womb as to wether it gets to live or die. When a woman becomes pregnant her body is no longer just her own, there is another human being in that body who should be entitled to the same "sacred rights" as everyone else. It is a much more complicated issue than just being in control of their own bodies. That argument would be valid if the government were telling them how many children to have or that they had to have a hysterectomy at a certain age; those actions would indeed be taking their choices away from them and would be wrong. But in the case of pregnancy, there is another life at stake and it becomes much more complicated and nuanced. I don't have all the answers and I don't presume to know what women feel or think when it comes to this issue. I just feel that the living being in the womb is entitled to the same rights as anyone else and I wish that when this issue is discussed, that more thought, consideration, and discussion were given to that point.
Thank you for a very well written response. It’s obvious that your beliefs trump anything I could say, because you’re a woman. But as a man who knows women, I believe a woman’s instinct is far more acute than any made-made law that is imposed on them. The fact is a woman knows what’s best for her and her baby. What is sacred is human life. Who would you want to have as your guide if you were pregnant? A law or your own moral compass?
David Te'Kannon Thank you for your respectful reply. First, let me say that I am a man, not a woman. That is why I said that I don't presume to know what women think or feel on this subject. Secondly, you make a great point about the law versus my own moral compass; I would not like the law to govern my every move. My only point is that the woman is not the only person involved that has rights. The unborn baby's rights are too often not considered or even acknowledged and I just wish that would change. That is why this is such a complicated issue and as I said before, I certainly don't have the answer. Because, I agree, to a degree, that certainly women do have their rights as well. As I say, complicated and nuanced. Thanks for a good, healthy discussion on a very sensitive topic.

Shortly after reading George’s column about Innisfree Village I visited the farm. That was 1974. It still exists and even grown some. A commune where “challenged” residents are equal with the workers... funded in part by capitalists that might have a challenged family member keeping them from the main stream of life. All kinds of challenges are at the farm - both mental and physical. They work the fields, the dairy, the kitchen, bakery, the store, the tractors, artwork, Weavery and more. Situated in the Blue Hills of Virginia. George’s Down syndrome son was only a couple years old then and the column was to view the care of challenged people from the standpoint of the future. And now the challenged are far better treated by society and special ed teachers are now the higher paid then lesser paid. I made two trips to Innisfree only months apart and met with the founder who just wanted to make a better life for those who may be among the remaining few generations of the challenged due to genetics... which is slowly happening. One woman with a pretty voice only had a normal face on one side and monstrous looking the other side. Very hard to look at. It was after dinner that I left in my little red Fiat. It was a pleasant weekend for me and several gathered around as I was about to drive home. Then a pretty voice said “Have a safe trip Bob” and my eyes met a challenged person face-to-face. But for George’s son it looks like he’s hit it out of the Park.
After a lifelong career as a republican, renouncing his membership in that club *probably* spoke louder to anyone listening than what his choice in a single election would be. My daughter Sarah was born 5 November 2019. Born a Mongoloid, one of the first questions we were asked: what are we going to do. Asked incidentally by a Chinese physician. Our response: what do you mean? The meaning being are we going to take her home? Later that day, our regular physician came to see us and said that she seemed a perfectly healthy baby and we should take her home and treat her like our other children, which is what we did. Today she is 35, quite happy, and healthy. Not all Down's babies are healthy and over the years, I've known several born with heart conditions who didn't make it out of childhood. It's tough losing a baby, even one not your own, but I do believe they have a right to try. Down's syndrome shouldn't be a justification for abortion. I can think of a dozen or more reasons but not DS.

Ted Koppel so wonderful to see you!!! You are an old friend!

George Will has outlived his usefulness and does not understand what a modern conservative is
That was well worth the time to watch.
Same. Conservative on many. Classic liberal on many. That seems to be very libertarian to me.
I lean towards conservative democrat, there's not much that I agree with any classic republican with, let's not even mention the current variation of that party. That being said, I've always admired George Will, he is a man of great integrity and insight. This country need more people like him on both parties to straighten things out.
frankiecrocker You admire him because he is a neocon, which is a leftwing ideology.

As Republican as McCain. I don't consider that a compliment.

The other leader of it was the Donald Trump from whom Will now distances his brand of conservatism. Sorry George, though thankfully you are not like Trump in temperament, you are more implicated in his rise that you want to admit.
If George Will was a TRUE baseball fan, he would boycott what this game has become, nothing more than home run derby and 6 pitchers, per team, per game, more strikeouts than hits
Attendance is down, some players brag that they don't hustle and most games last more than 3 hours, WS games played on COLD nights etc etc etc
Notice when he said that Trump shouldn't be reelected; he didn't say he would vote for the Democrat.
After a lifelong career as a republican, renouncing his membership in that club *probably* spoke louder to anyone listening than what his choice in a single election would be.
That said, he did say it was going to be a binary choice....and that beginning to heal the country meant choosing someone OTHER than Donald Trump while making a choice in a binary situation.
The last vestige of great Republicans like Reagan and Goldwater. Even if you disagreed with them, the argument was civil and respectful. Not lowered to the level of name calling and insults.
Over the last 45 years I've voted republican and democrat. (I look for leadership qualities, not the party he sleeps with) It's pathetic what the great GOP has turned into!
Goldwater began the decline of the GOP into the crazy. His base was a freak show remarkably like Trumps.
@@OroborusFMA
Goldwater was ultra conservative for most of his political career. However he became a moderate in his later years. He even became a proponent of gay rights. Unheard of for a conservative at that time.
The point of my comment was there was a civility in politics 50 years ago. A Goldwater and a Kennedy could sit at the bargaining table and hammer out some agreement without it turning into a name-calling free for all.
To think that man is the epitome of the universe is a ignorant of one's soul. Of course this life after death, I have seen it. A Native American.
✔ me too 😁 those alt right religious puppetsfor the church are going to be really surprised 🤗
Not a sober thought to be found in your comment, but thanks for sharing anyway.
mark allen in Ayurvedic body typing explains this. There are three body types; and combos thereof. Will is probably a pitta and that sort of psychology is rather skeptic, and earthbound. On the other hand a Vata like me is able to comprehend the unseen world. Then the other dosha is Kapha. Now this subject is very complex. The type of constitution one is born with reflects that souls makeup and proclivities; in mind, body, and spirt.
Very interesting Alara, please give me source material so I may educate myself on your views and information. Book titles, internet sites etc. Thank you, M
mark allen dr Virender Sodhi of Bellevue Wa. My doctor for many years. There are many books on the subject. But having an Ayurvedic/Naturopath and having been in the healing arts, it was a real great way to learn a new path. I would think you can do a search and see what you find.
How can he talk about abortion without thanking TRUMP? It tells me he really isn’t against abortion at all.
WHY is George Will's opinion important? It's NOT, It's merely his own opinion; not one that I'm willing to live by......and THAT is MY opinion!
Granted, but George Will is important because he was capable of writing that opinion in a concise, well-reasoned, entertaining way and thus getting it into national circulation is a number of well-established and respected publications to be read and considered and debated by millions. I disagree with him on most issues, too, I suspect, and his writing is just his opinion, but that doesn't decrease his sway or social influence over the years, which at times has been fairly significant.
@@NekoMouser Yes, such a shame.
@@cindys6468 Shame that someone was capable of writing well enough to reach millions?
I don't agree with him on many things, but rather than say it's a shame he put in the work and talent and got famous for it, I'd rather tell the left to up their game and do more of the same thing.
Cindy S - You, and everyone else he grew up with. He was a complete outcast. No one likes him. He had to go to a special school, because he was too much of a snotty snob to go to school with real kids. He couldn't play any sport, so he tried to ingratiate himself with the boys in the neighborhood by memorizing baseball statistics. It's a truly pathetic response from a milquetoast pretender trying to ingratiate himself with the neighborhood bullies. What a sad example of a misunderstood inferiority complex.
@@mantisnomo5984 WOW....YOU SOUND LIKE YOU KNEW HIM PERSONALLY! SUCH POINTED STATEMENTS. WELL.....HE CERTAINLY FOUND A WAY TO MAKE HIS RICHES! 😝
The Republican Party left the Conservatives years ago. George even admitted that if we maintain Republican control of the Senate so "not much will happen" (a staggering objective), it would heal the political divide to replace President Trump. In other words, let's get a Republican in there who will do the Dems' bidding and tell 65 million Americans to stop interfering with the DC Swamp.
I have always liked his clean-cut conservative attitude. His straight up ways. However, we differ on whether we choose the tree of good and evil or the tree of like. I choose the latter. Bless you Mr. Will, I pray you see things through a different prism.
Tree of life!
@@carolgriffiths7562 , I too support life. I do hope you don't mean from a religious prism?
Reason1717 I mean through Jesus ...
George will does not deserve the praise he is given. He is wrong.
The reporter starts by saying " There is no need asking George Will where he stands.". So why are you doing the interview.. I turned it off after six seconds.
you are really dumb. this is about the man; not so much, his politics.
PS his politics suck
@@brainsareus - P.S. The man sux, too.
George is now like the man without a country.
Like many of us.
Gotta take George out . . . to a ballgame ! 😎 He's but the classical example of 'the player' . . . of life ! He's become THE MASTER 🇺🇸of what makes this country so great . . .at no one else's expense, however with everyone elses interests . . . risen, to it's peak ! My everyday priority . . . is to find the latest stand, of George Will !
The man wears a tie to a baseball game. He's a throwback to an earlier era in a good way.
You appear to be a contradiction in terms...Girlie Boy.
Bill O’Reilly pretty much got it right when he called George Will a hack.
Bill O'Reilly calling George will a hack is like Donald Trump calling Hillary Clinton a liar.
A rare voice of pragmatism in a delusional world.
If Will believes we'd be better off with Biden as President or that there is even a chance that will happen he is out of his mind.
Guided me into baseball. Thanks again.
If I ever saw a wolf in sheep's clothing it's George Will he's an egomaniac coming off as a humble individual. Deceiver.
If Will is an egomaniac, what is Trump? Just a maniac?
@@Finians_Mancave - Will is a covert narcissist, and Trump is a grandiose narcissist.
“A covert narcissist?” That is something like an overdressed stripper. Doesn’t exist.
A wedding ring with the MLB logo... He's got a great wife!
“Seven hundred fifty words, and I’m out of here.” Maybe the first time I’ve agreed with this man ... Interesting to see these two dinosaurs again, together... how life passes... that generation, forty years ago, wanted proof of climate change; do they get it now?
Al Gore said the oceans would rise 20 feet.....I still go to the beach I went to as a kid in the 70s.....the water is in the same place. And the temperatures around here are COOLER than they were when I was growing up. I don't believe any of the horsesh1t they are trying to shovel anymore.
Did I just hear correctly?! Did he say that he prefers Bernie Sanders over Donald Trump in 2020.
I used to be a big devote of George Will.
Wow! What an elitist. He knows what’s best for the United States and would be willing to sacrifice it for his principles.
I could never read another column of his or watch him spouting an opinion on television. I have lost all my respect for him.
Oh and he is against abortion but doesn’t believe in Gd. An oxymoron if there ever was one.
I don't agree with him but I like his mind.
Anybody else shocked that Ted Koppel is still alive?
I'm not fan of him at all. Zero
I find him boring and if you don't agree with him, he sees you as being less than he.
Neither am I and I am a real democrat who thinks the constitution is the essence of the meaning of democracy "people rule" from the Greek. And, when I use that word I always think of the Bill of Rights as an essential part of a government of, by, and for the people. You cannot form a republic unless the people are those who rule over it in every way! I consider myself a democratic constitutional republican, and every word of that phrase is essential and interdependent if you are going to have a real democracy, i.e. the people ruling the nation!
sugar19 labarre we’re all crushed by your admission
mostly disagreed with him upon reading his columns; he is a master of the english language, as well as a principled man; how many people' d come out & admit that they are atheists ? sensible & caring person...
Good point. Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot (Hitler was a religious pagan) came out and admitted that they are atheists also...... George Will has placed himself in "good" company......sarc
Feel like I misjudged RMNixon. He was very decent man compared to dumpty trumpty. Served in World War 2. & left office when his party asked him to go.
Opening up China was a landmark foreign policy achievement.
Mary, Richard Nixon was vile. There is no softening him or his politics.
yes, a liberal scumbag would love a republican who left office when told to , trump 's a street fighter and you hate that . no phony scandal is going to drive him from office . Better get more illegals to vote next time .
@@christopherstarr8050 Trump is from the 1% why does everyone forget this. He was given everything then lost it because of his ego and stupid decisions. His father was the man who came from nothing and worked his way up.
Sounds to me like most of the comments above are by people who embrace socialism of one form or another. Trump makes Nixon look like a communist by comparison, and I voted for Nixon. Trump is a thousand times better than Nixon and has way more guts than Nixon ever did. Trump stands up to the globalist fascist socialist deep state. Nixon didn't dare defy the assassins of JFK the Rockefeller owned and controlled central bankers !!!
This is nothing more than the swamp fight back. #draintheswamp
The swap is now running the country.
Do you know where Trump administration got their people.
They swam to the bottom of the swamp and plucked them from the mud.
