This was a routine George and Jack performed many times (inspired by a "terrible" vaudeville act George supposedly knew)- at private affairs, charity benefits, and evenutally, television. The "third partner" was always a friend, or celebrity acquaintance of Jack and George's: Jimmy Stewart performed this with them in another TV version in 1958, and still later, Gregory Peck....
This was based on a real act that George Burns was part of in his youth. Burns, then Nathan Birnbaum, teamed with two other fellows Hymie Goldberg and Nat Fields. In the act George was Glide, Hymie was Goldie and Nat was Fields.
...once, at a charity benefit, Debbie Reynolds' husband Harry Karl joined the act. He confessed to George before their appearance that he was nervous; George told him not to worry, and when the opening fanfare began, to "start on your left foot". Then, he pulled Jack aside, and silently advised him, "Start on your RIGHT foot"....
I was born in Scranton... some of the old Vaudeville theaters were still standing when I was a kid.
There are several version of this skit, but I like this one best. They all knew exactly how to do the old music hall shtick!
