Making Phosphoryl Chloride to Fight YouTube Censorship (REVISED VERSION)

  • Phosphoryl chloride is an exceptionally useful chemical, and one that doesn't have enough representation or accessible synthesis pathways here on RUclips. So you can imagine my dismay when RUclips decided to demonetize my first attempt to show an easy route to make it! It was demonetized and age-restricted because I dared to show the negative consequences of accidentally misusing this chemical (not even because of the chemical itself). I won't say WHAT the consequences were, since they seem to trigger the poor souls (or bots...?) at RUclips, but if you want to see the original video, here it is:
    • Turning Salt Into Phos...
    I still want all of you to know about this pretty cool pathway though, so this is that video edited to suit RUclips's fancy!

      On the other hand, youtube(censortube)seems to welcome videos of persons doing ABSOLUTELY POINTLESS things such as melting and pyrolyzing random objects (Lego bricks, candies, biro pens, golfballs, etc, etc) over a skillet heated to red heat above a camping stove, with horrendous fumes given off (such fumes would probably be far more problematic for health, if breathed in, than well planned-out chem experiments/syntheses performed in a hobby chemistry setting, with safety precautions taken and PPE worn).

    Watched the entire thing out of spite. Being uncareful and ending up in the E.R. should NOT be age restricted. In fact that's PRECISELY the kind of video young aspiring nerds should watch. How I managed to survive age 10-18 is a mystery to me, as I was book-smart enough to be really fckn dangerous (and blew up several "items" in the neighbourhood) but I had no realistic understanding of just how dangerous those things can be. I joined the army at 18 and oh boy... oh BOY did I realise that my 12 year old self belonged on a terror watchlist.

    • @barcodenosebleed5485
      @barcodenosebleed5485 14 дней назад +3

      This just enrages me so much and reminds me of someone from my youth. I was in elementary school at the time and this boy from my neighborhood was about 5 years older. He was widely admired, known as super smart. Basically had the reputation of like George Washington at school. Well, one day he was playing with some explosives and eliminated a few fingers. He was completely distraught over the incident. He had big plans, including the military and eventually wanted to be an FBI agent. He saw his dreams vanishing and assumed his life was over because of the incident and unfortunately in that anguish decided to make that a certainty.
      Even good, smart kids are going to mess around with stuff they have no business with. Better that they have more versus less information.
      YT couldn't care less about common sense. They see a risk for liability so they mitigate it.

    • @DUKE_of_RAMBLE
      @DUKE_of_RAMBLE 18 дней назад +1

      Any time the recommended videos are getting out of whack, I send YT a detailed Feedback. For these Quality of Life sort of things, they're good (prompt) about addressing.
      I've sent dozens of feedback over the years about various quirks, from comment preview line counts (before "Read More..." shows), to the Recommended being absolutely broken and recommending music that doesn't match anything I've ever listened to, and "Not Interested" not functioning and continuing to recommend similar content. As well as tons of other small app user interface annoyances.
      All of them trend to get sorted out within a week or two. (the "read more" one occurred within a couple hours heh)
      Lately I think they've been overwhelmed though, as the comments system is in shambles, and has been for a couple months. I see they are trying (I comment alot lol), but it's kinda just getting worse... 😅
      However, all of these things are unrelated to POLICY stuff... You pretty much won't see any movement on use grievance with policies, but I *_still_* suggest sending a scathing Feedback about it. 😏
      Eventually, as more of us convey we're pissed off, they'll budge a little bit. 🤏

It creates a conical leak path without a proper thread sealant like PTFE which would more than likely burn at 500ish° f, also common SCH40 pipe is malleable iron, you can get 304 or 316 stainless fittings and pipe, however they are fairly expensive.

There are trace amounts of a few other elemental compounds that are added to help prevent the salt from clumping into a single, solid mass if it's exposed to a large amount of moisture.

    To be honest you pick a pure salt, I work at one of Morton's plants and we put other anti-caking agent in table salt, like TCP (Tricalium phosphate) and sodium silicate, sodium ferrocyanide. I would recommend Morton's tfc 999 fine salt or sodium chloride USP.

    Phosphoryl chloride (aka Phosphorus oxychloride, POCl3, or "pocl") does indeed react vigorously with water. I was once using it as a reagent, following a procedure from an oldish paper. The work-up procedure described washing the reaction mixture with water and sodium bicarbonate solution. As I added it to water, it was spitting and splashing a lot, so I had the clever idea of using ice instead of water. I added one chip of ice to the reaction mixture, and it went "whoosh", depositing my reaction mixture on the lab ceiling and forming a cloud of HCl gas. Most chemists have had to do a "bench extraction" at some point. Some have even had to do a "floor extraction". That was the only time I've ever done a ceiling extraction, though.
    Oh, by the way, your lithal looks awful. It's supposed to be grey, not white. I have a suspicion that your sample got exposed to water somehow and formed aluminium hydroxide.

      Salt, as in Sodium Chloride?
      Or "salt", as in the general chemistry term, study as Copper Sulfate?
      If the latter, yes. For example, you can use the aforementioned Copper Sulfate to deposit copper onto another metal.
      I've done it by dissolving copper in hydrogen chloride, with the help of a little H2O2 (just generation purpose 3% strength), which makes CuCl2 [Copper(ii) Chloride]. Then heat that solution up and dip your metal in it, swirl it around, and watch it become copper plated.
      _(note: chemical plating isn't quite as good as electro plating, but you can combine the two methods for better results)_

Phosphoryl chloride can be used to make similar organophosphates though, although I don't know of any notable ones off the top of my head.

    Before I watched the whole video I thought that the reason for censoring would be the fact that POCl3 is a known precursor to one of the n3rve agents, namely the first one synthesized by Schrader. Despite being extremely useful in laboratory and common in industry both PCl3 and POCl3 always raise suspicions. It's weird that yt demonetised the video because photo from ER. Likely it's the AI, but much worse content is floating around on yt for years without any restrictions.
