Obviously you never had an A-10 save your life or you would sing another tune. Fortunately the A-10C wil be around for quite more time DESPITE the pencil pushers attempts, common sense prevailed.
Pedro Portela I dont think he was trying to say this is going to replace the A-10. But as a supplement to smaller operations the A-29 is a good fit and will take some of the stress off of the A-10 community and other CAS platforms. Glad to see the A10 is going to be around into the 2040s, but for smaller conflicts or to let other platforms focus on other ops, the A29 is the logical choice due to its operational success. I had A10s show up to JAF in 2012 when we got breached but they couldn’t shoot due to the proximity(not saying the A29s would be able to). Luckily for us aviation guys we had our OH58s with us. A29s and A10s I think will also make a pretty good hunter killer team as well.

100 Toucanos were built under licence in Belfast by Shorts for the RAF as a trainer, I have seen them both here in N Ireland and in North Yorkshire, lovely little aircraft.

I watched a squadron of naval pilot cadets do short take offs and landings from the Laughlin airport in Nevada while on a gambling junket . The locals said they started at 0600 and flew the same pattern until 1800 hours six days a week and had been doing so for ten days . The airport is across the Colorado river from the gambling town of Laughlin Nevada a distance of about one half mile. The Tucano is a turbine engine aircraft of about 600 horse power. They would start about half way down the airstrip and then jerk the aircraft up at about a 40 degree angle and climb to maybe a thousand feet then make a sharp climbing turn to the left, cross the Colorado river

I flew the AT-28 "Ground Attack" Trojan in Vietnam (69 -70) 20th SOS USAF and we didn't (couldn't afford to) have do 3 or 4 fly by's to scope a dirt runway! Are they afraid they would hurt the Turcano?? Let's see them put the Turcano up Against an AT-28! We flew the shit out of them until wings had to fall off!

Los os son muy buenos turbohélices de ataque a tierra y apoyo cercano, los dos pueden cazar helicópteros de combate, pero los dos son extremadamente vulnerables a los misiles y a la artillería antiaérea, en Afganistán pudieron andar bien, porque los aviones multirrol ya habían arrasado todo y contra el ISIS por ser una guerra asimétrica se pudieron destacar, pero no pueden suplir al A-10 porque la potencia de fuego de su gatling de 30 mm es superior, ningun turbohélice de ataque puede igualarlo en su poder destructivo como antitanque

Why not just use the A10? I’d feel a lot safer in an A10 and on the ground I’d rather am A10 provide cover over a crop duster. Also, ever since LT Short’s death as a test pilot (F-18 pilot) these planes don’t seem to have the best safety record in my mind either.

To be honest... replacing the Warthog with a turboprop plane is probably not a good idea. But if the turboprop replaces it... if i were to be the secretary of defense... I would keep the Warthog in a specialized attack role along with the winning entrant of the oa-x competition.

As much as i love the super tucano i prefer the a10 to use against the chinese /iranian army. not replacing but complementing. the a10 is an awesome machine that i want to thrive for more 30 years.
fun fact in october 2019 that is exactly what is going happen.Warthogs stay on until at least till 2030 and the A-29 will be like their sexy mad litlle minions. Awesome! I hope the Dutch airfoce will get some of these A-29's as well! I love to see some WO2 P-51 nose art on them too!

Not only do they not have jets, but they have little to no surface to air missile capabilities as far as I know, your average insurgent is wearing sandals, and is carrying around an AK, or an RPK, maybe an RPG. To me? This seems plenty efficient to deal with such a threat.
