This video is pure gold. Very little film of racing at that time and I’ve never seen film of a pit walk like this. To me, this is one of the most important archival videos of our sport.
#4 on the works Suzuki is Japanese 1978 world champion in the 125cc class, Akira Watanabe! My all time favorite GP racer! Really cool to see this again in 2022 with young Japanese rider, Joe Shimoda doing so well in the current version of this class in America.
Just awesome!
Thank you for the video! I am building two 1980 yz125g*s now in 2022 and it is so nice to be able to see them in their real time period!
thank you for posting, this is how a MX bike should sound
Love that start. Nice unfettered green grass sitting in mud with standing water ! Motocross is the best winter sport. Classic mud footage.
I loved the real works bikes of this time. I would love to build a replica of Mark Barnett’s watercooled, dual shock 125 from that year. Use the 79 or 80 twin shock frame and the 81 watercooled motor.
Killer video. I love the quote, "I've got that umbrella hat on, dad" at around 3 min. Stylin'. So cool to see pit footage, I went to those races as a kid. Thanks for posting.
The Mark the Bomber Barnett was a beast!!!
This is a awesome video. I know it was posted awhile back and I'm just now commenting on it. I think the number 4 bike is everts and the kid wiping the bike off is his son Stefan :)
I remember Harry Everts. 250 World Champion at one point. On a very fast twin carb "PUCH". Good eye.
Thank you for posting this clip!!!!!
O'Mara kicked ass in mud...he had hand guards that I have to say I love them..
i was there great day's take's me back to my youth i only live about 15 to 20 mile's away
Great footage 🤙
I was there. Good times
Just like every race. Conditions are great until the day before when it comes a biblical downpour. Great vid of hearty souls.
Also that isn't mike brown. He was too young to be a pro in '80. I've raced with mike and he couldn't have been more then 11-12 or even younger in 1980. But really this homemade video to me is one of the best classics posted on the net. ..priceless. WOW
+Rick Anderson There was a national mini rider back in the mid to late 70's they called "Flying Mike Brown"
Yep, I recall him.
Rick Anderson ever race with Brownie at Dallas Ricker or I-40?
As in Choo Choo Anderson?
Awesome 👍
Why did they do away with the 125 class
Hey I would love to use this video as B-Roll for a documentary that I'm making? Can we chat about credit?
I think Pedro Perales from TN placed 17th.
Good ole Pedro Perales. He was the FASTEST 80cc RIDER on the planet when I first started racing in 76. I was amazed at how fast him and Kerry Perales were. Never dreamed that 4 years later I went to the expert 125 class and blew by him and dusted the entire field. In Lebanon, TN. ONE OF THE BEST TRACKS I RACED AT MY ENTIRE CAREER. AND I RACED ALL OVER THE SOUTHEST. MID SOUTHEST. FIRST RACE IN PONCA CITY IN 78, 5TH PLACE IN 80 STOCK NOVICE. HATED IT GOT A 2ND, 3RD AND CANT REMEMBER THE LAST RACE. BAD START MOVING THRU THE FIELD BACK STRAIGHT WITH A BUNCH OF JUMPS SPACED WAY APART. A DUST BOWL AND I CANE DOWN ON DUDES BIKE. HURT MY KNEE BUT GOT BACK ON AND GOT A GOOD ENOUGH FINISH TO WIND UP 5TH THAT YEAR
Next year 80cc MODIFIED Expert class on a 78 EC BERT RM 80 RUNNING IN 4TH THE FIRST 2 RACES ALL ALONE. KEHOE GEORGE HOLLAND AND CANT REMEMBER THE 3RD PLACE RIDER BUT MY BIKE BROKE BOTH MOTOS. DNFD BOTH AND DIDNT MAKE THE FINAL RACE. GOT BACK HOME TO NASHVILLE ASKED DAD TO JUNK THE BIKE AND GET ME A NEW YZ 80. WAS BLAZING FAST AND NOBODY COULD BEAT ME NO MATTER WHERE RACED AT. I WAS GONNA WIN THE 80CC STOCK AND MODIFIED CLASSES IN PONCA CITY IN 1980 ON MY STOCK YZ 80. NO MATTER WHAT AND WOULD HAVE BEEN THE FAVORITE TO WIN THAT YEAR. TURNED 15 AND WAS GETTING PROTESTED EVERYWHERE WE WENT IN THR 80 CLASS. WAS ON A YZ 100 ALSO AND BLOWING THE FIELD AWAY IN THAT CLASS AS WELL, EVERY WHERE AND EVERY STATE. DAD WANTED TO GET RID OF THE 80 AND DID ALL THE WHILE I KEPT TELLING HIM I DO NOT CARE ABOUT BEING PROTESTED AND COULD CARE LESS ABOUT ANYMORE TROPIES. JUST LET ME STAY ON THE 80 BECAUSE THEY COULD PROTEST AT ALL AMA RACES BUT IT DIDN'T MATTER BECAUSE I WAS STILL ALLOWED TO RACE AND WAS IN MY MIND BY NOW THE FASTEST 80 RIDER IN THE WORLD AND WAS GONNA GET A 1ST PLACE IN PONCA CITY IN 80. WHICH IN TURN GAVE YOU AN AUTOMATIC 125CC PROFESSIONAL MOTOCROSS FACTORY RIDE ON THE FACTORY YAMAHA TEAM. BUT NO HE JUST HAD TO GET RID OF IT AND BUY A YZ 125 INSTEAD, WHICH IN TURN WOUND UP SCREWING MY DREAMS OF RACING MOTOCROSS FOR A LIVING AND STAYING IN THE SPORT AFTER RETIRING FROM THE RACING. SCENE OF IT.
killer video fukin great job
Yes thank you
this looks later than 80 look at all the mono shocks.. thought 80 was the last year for honda dual shocks..
hondaxl250k0 production bikes ran dual shocks in 80’, WORKS BIKES not so much, those were pre-production prototypes
Deborah chesser interesting I never knew that. I now have 68 bikes and I’m still learning. 😂
O'Mara's bike always dies while leading.
