REGINA IS A PURE GODDESS, WHAT A FEEL-SPIRIT-FIRE-ENERGY!!! THE BAND SOUNDS REAL BAD ASS-KILLING

*In the same way that Regina Carter lives her art, I aspire to live my life . . . not as a label.*
Hearing her play, I feel immense gratitude as a Black American woman with a diverse ancestry & set of traditions.
My epic love of jazz is *a gift from my mother,* who left this Earth when I was age 15.
She was my world: her style, savvy, & gentle way with words.
…my earliest memories were accompanying her on the piano, as she played Bach minuets on the flute… Meanwhile, swingin’ recordings of Claude Bolling & Oscar Peterson were ever part of our mother-daughter soundtrack.
At age 17, security is what I sought most in her absence….
Ann Arbor, Michigan, became an unsuspected & unforgettable home during my college years.
*My west-coast consciousness got a dose of the Midwest ethics & loyalty* that I’ll never depart.
    ******
(as a physics student, I was one of a few females…& often, the only female of color…) After class, I’d hunt a practice room at the Univ of Michigan school of music, until a snobby bunch wished to kick me out as a
    non-music major 🙄😂…good lord.
My path was different…but when I last checked, *music is mankind’s universal inheritance.* We did not create the mechanics of sound, but we are given the gift to express it 🙌🏽.
I carried my mother’s jazz & classical sheet music with me…her handwriting brought me comfort & I still follow those written notations.
For me, Regina brings her spirit to life…
And she also inspires young students, *among a legacy of jazz greats from Cass Tech High School -* (an alumni history that is just legendary for a single institution…) she’s joined by Ron Carter, Kenny Burrell, & the late Donald Byrd, Geri Allen, Dorothy Ashby, Paul Chambers, Gerald Wilson…..the list goes on.
*Facts - there ain’t nothin like Motown…the people, and their commitment to their art.*
My many trips to Detroit, down I-94, remain precious to me 🙌🏽.
Regina: you represent a world that’s unapologetically unique…yet quietly ‘me’. - *My love & respect for your mastery, message, & resolve to always stay true to your art.*

Meira A Your story is also inspiring and I believe I detect that same humility and grace in your communications as I do in Regina Carter as she speaks and plays. Your mother gifted you a love of jazz and I hope that through the jazz family, you have received the gift of love. 💖

*She’s Got the World on a String - Regina Carter Reigns* 🎻🎹🥁🎻
0:00 The Surrey With the Fringe On Top (R. Rodgers; lyr. O. Hammerstein)
    5:48 Ground Work (Cedar Walton)
    12:02 Introduction of the Band
13:25 Can’t Buy Me Love (Sir Paul McCartney)
24:16 My Favorite Things (R. Rodgers; lyr. O. Hammerstein)
    33:54 Regina Reminisces - a quick anecdote
    35:35 Come Sunday (Duke Ellington)
45:36 Lady Be Good (George Gershwin, lyr. Ira Gershwin)
    58:34 Misterioso (Thelonious Monk)
1:12:30 Squatty Roo (comp. Johnny Hodges; Ray Brown, John Clayton)
1:22:56 I’ll Be Seeing You (Sammy Fain; lyr. Irving Kahal)
1:32:16 Struttin’ With Some BBQ (comp. Lillian Hardin Armstrong; lyr. Don Raye)
1:43:29 Just Squeeze Me (Duke Ellington; lyr. Lee Gaines)
*Our ears found their soulmate in Regina Carter’s strings.*
We connect with her violin as a long-awaited companion: *stunned by the compatibility, excited by the possibilities, and filled with the awareness that this is simply meant ‘to be.’* ✨
She was meant to play with the trio…or, rather, the trio was meant to play with her.
*Emmet, Russell, and Kyle enter elite artistic territory as they match her soulful versatility.*
*Regina bends genres, just as easily as she bends notes.*
    - Her ability to abstract a melody is remarkable and is powered by her *willingness to embrace all forms of musical traditions.*
Her ease with multiple languages builds a vast musical lexicon where *every cry, swing, & pluck of her violin carries a sweet wisdom.* 🌎
While we marvel at what she is doing, it’s even more *stunning to pay attention to what she is saying….*
Her lines are wickedly clever, articulated with purpose, and feel like ‘home’ in a beautifully reimagined way.
    *Regina’s message bespeaks her brilliance.*
And that is, precisely, what *the trio does best:*
communicate new ideas, while staying dangerously plugged-in.
*On Monday night, we felt their joy & a mutual mastery of innovation.* 🔥🎼
Can it really be this good? - Yes, jazz family…it is. *A match made in heaven.*

If I were marooned on a desert island with just one recording and a playback device, this may be the one I would select.
I can't believe the number of musical quotes played in this concert. If someone with wide-ranging musical knowledge could put a list together, this fan would appreciate seeing it.

Your abilities are mind boggling and your impact on the jazz world is huge. I'm thinking about sending a video in because you guys are one of the main reasons I'm a jazz fanatic now. Thank you!

Amazing……..all around greatness! Technical q. For someone with better ears than me…….when Regina plays (I believe the 3rd chourus of “Can’t Buy Me Love” ) a ‘way outside’ sort of a scale, does anyone know what (in a nutshell) she’s doing eg. what scale? Thank you for indulging in my curiosity!

    • @cathalmurphy8623
      @cathalmurphy8623 2 года назад +3

If 16:44 is the moment: I think it's a 4 bar phrase. Bar 1 is a Bb arpegio going up into a B major arpegio coming down. Bar 2 is a Cmaj 7 going up then a Db major coming down. I think she then plays around a Db maj 7 in bar 3 (Db ionian) and then a B maj 7 (B ionian) in bar 4. Its the chromatic arpegios that make it. The actuall lines themselves arn't crazy but in context they are just amazing!!
      (apologies if not 100% accurate)
