I read the article and really don't understand her complaint. I ordered a Defoe shirt here in the USA the day after he was signed. Upon learning of his retirement, the thought never occurred to me that the shirt was somehow worthless or less meaningful. You either love a player or you don't. When you purchase a shirt with a player's name you assume that player won't be on the team forever. Is a Barcelona Messi shirt not worth wearing because he doesn't play for them anymore? If this woman is really so upset about it, she should neatly fold up the shirt, put it in a box and store it in the attic. Twenty-five years from now it will be a collector's item and her son can sell it and perhaps use the money to make a car payment or two. As for me, I'll wear it proudly just as I wear all my sports shirts graced with the names of players both active and retired, living and dead (rest in peace Diego!).
Got to say, sounds like tough sh*t tbh. Not entitled to a refund, and what is the club meant to do with a Defoe shirt? Not like they can put it back in the store and sell it again. We're a business at the end of the day. It just feels like people are queuing up, and finding any excuse to have a go at the club at the minute.
ChrisDunn ...Totally agree mate ...imo it's her own stupidity for buying a shirt near seasons end to get a players name on that we all knew wasn't going to be here for next season anyway.???!! PLUS the shirt will be replaced for next season anyway...but she should take heart that there are plenty of fans who still wear their fave old strips with their fave players names on the back. Agree, if you get a players name on your shirt you pay your money and take your chances. If a player leaves for whatever reason you can’t just expect a refund, whatever the circumstances.
Don’t think a refund should be issued..Highly likely the shirts been worn..So not “ New “ Anymore..What if Defoe was injured and couldn’t fulfil his contract? Would the Mother still expect a refund? It’s a piece of history and should be treasured and tbh if Defoe really was the little lads hero he’d still wear it with pride no matter what..Just like some fans still wear Phillips name on their strip to this day..
With absolute full respect Michael, I dont agree that the club should refund or change the shirt. You purchase a shirt and if you chose to have a player name on the back, then you take the risk that the player may leave. And just because that player does leave, why should that then trigger the club to refund?! I understand that this is a young lad, but that doesn't change refund policies for the club/any business. Its unfortunate of course, but I can't help but feel she needs to just swallow this one. I think we need to be very careful in what the club apparently said to her. I'm actually going to side with the club on this one, the mother has made the decision to pay extra to get Defoe on the back of the shirt, and he is still a club legend so I'd say the club is within its rights to refuse the refund, I'm pretty sure if this had happened to a PL club theyd refuse as well, where would it end if personalized shirts can be refunded.?
Well said Michael. The standards at the club should always be high . It’s disappointing when you hear about things like this which makes folk annoyed. Surely the Club should be able to sort this out to a loyal supporter , she’s not asking for the Crown Jewels for goodness sake. C,mon Sunderland respect your fans and get this sorted. Good video Michael and an important issue. Stay safe.👍👍👍⚽️⚽️⚽️
It's not a nice situation, whichever way you look at it. I suppose the question is 'Should the club refund all shirts with Defoe on them?' because once you refund one, you need to refund them all. An alternative could be that Defoe himself signs the shirt. It would be a nice gesture from a man who has left the club prematurely. Anyway, he's still a legend and to have his name on the back, regardless of leaving, is still valuable in my opinion.
we are not a big club, anymore , now we're just a big fan base... these, endless shitty stick things, do not happen at big clubs. or ironically at little non league football clubs. just at ''corporate level'' football clubs.
Disagree. We have everything that is Premier League standard apart from league status, which I know is the most important thing but as I’ve kept saying, we are not sustainable in this league. And it’s about time we act like a big club. Hence why I’ve done this video.
Michael, you are a lovely guy but can't agree on some of your comments about the government. The cost increase of every thing, It's a world wide issue , fuel prices, inflation, the price of gold shows that. The club are skint just as all league one clubs although our overheads are astronomical in comparison to Cambridge, Accrington etc. . Its all down to day to day management and this club just needs a spark. Until then we will be a sad has been who has hope to get back to the big time. I'm 63 years old and just hope that I see SAFC back in the premier league in my life time. Keep the videos coming son, you're class.
Not sure anyone else is pointing a finger at Defoe for dropping us in the shit and the various aspects of the knock on effect? Yes, he's a lovely guy, hero etc etc but I think he's being let off lightly. There, I've said it !
Tbh this is the risk you take putting a name on the back of your shirt. I once put Clough number 9 on the back of mine then realized he played number 10 later.
Good luck with the rest of the season. The fans are Sunderland AFC. It's the same with every club. The 'owners' are renting the premises. They're here today & gone tomorrow. A clubs fans have always been here and will be here forever. Cheers.
Great video on an interesting subject. Replica shirts and printed names are a choice not an essential, thats the cold harsh reality of it. However SAFC use care in the community of their motto, and their approach on this matter is beyond miserly. Replacing kids shirts with JD's name on might cost a lot of money but it would be an exercise in giving a toss about your fans and the clubs future season ticket holders to make the gesture of replacing them for free.
