I am pretty sure you have listened to Sajjad Ali before, but perhaps without knowing that it was Sajjad Ali. Teri Yaad, when it was released, used to be on every radio station here in the Gulf. ‘Her Zulm’, Sohni lagdi, Paniyon main, Cinderella and dozens of his other songs find their way to radio playlists routinely. As so many other before me have commented, Sajjad Ali has graduated to legendary from iconic. He has been regaling audiences with his ballads and songs for generations, since he started on his singing journey when he was still a child artist. His vocal range and versatility enable him to reinvent himself every few years for his younger audiences - such that his appeal transcends generations. Fortunately for us, he is blessed with an uncanny knack to always have the pulse of the audiences. His adaptation of Cheb Khalid’s global hit, Didi, came out as Babia in the early 90’s and catapulted him to street fame - that was probably the first time he had leapt across generations with his music. The album was a blockbuster hit, not least because of the title song, but also the trademark Sajjad Ali songs which came after the madness of Babia. With Bolo Bolo Kia dekha (covered many years later by Fawad and Xulfi’s EP in Coke Studio) and Kuch Larkiyan, he demonstrated his penchant for pop and soft rock too. Chief Saab, the next album, made a political statement on on the one hand while also introducing us to Sajjad Ali’s love of martial arts and his habit of doing his own stunts. Again, the title song became a mega hit, while the album contained many other songs showcasing his range. I think Laari Adda, a song delightfully covered in one of the first Nescafé Basement episodes, was also part of the same album. But I could be wrong - the days of my youth are long past me. Sajjad Ali kept belting out popular hits while giving us gems like Naraaz ho effortlessly. In all of this, his madly talented brother Waqar Ali went on to have a stellar stint as a musician, singer and songwriter himself - but for some strange reason, despite giving some soul stirring songs, never found the same heights of success as his elder brother - even though he played alongside the legendary NFAK amongst others, and produced music for many musicians including Sajjad Ali himself. He used to make regular appearances in Sajjad Ali’s videos for many years. Their younger brother Lucky Ali too had a flash in the pan career. And now, with his daughter joining him on Coke Studio, he has already given us a glimpse into how he has the next generation baton-ready. I had the privilege of meeting Sajjad Ali a couple of years ago and was blown away by his humility, generosity and sense of humor. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise but it did that he was very well-read too and could hold his own in a free-wheeling discussion around history and philosophy. A true artist at heart. So yes, DO react to more of his videos. Like other iconic superstars of his trans-generational times, Nazia and Zohaib, Junaid Jamshaid and VS, Strings, Alamgir, and Junoon, he holds the hearts of a nation in his palm and the stories of our zeitgeist in his music. Out of all of them though, he is the only one who trained as a musician and singer and who catered to the tastes of multiple generations at all times in his career - transitioning between a light ghazal singer and a pop star effortlessly.
Thank you so much for this comment, it's akin to an ode to the legend! As the other commentators have said already, Sajjad Ali is a legend in Pakistan. Back in the 90s in his younger years he used to produce a lot of experimental music, but since then found his own niche and this song is a typical Sajjad Ali number, simple but sweet.
Wowwww , seriously u haven't heard The Legend Sir Sajjad Ali . He's a true legend. Most versatile & effortless singer from Pakistan 🇵🇰 been in industry since 4 decades. Absolute legend ❤
Sajjad Ali is one of those singers who didn't get as much fame and respect as he deserved.. He is one of the best, technically sound singers that Pakistan has ever produced. Even during his younger days when he rose to fame with 'Babiya', although that song or even the album didn't have the maturity and all (and quite rightly so), but still he sung those less meaningful songs so damn well! And then the 90s, the 2000s, every song he has released whether solo or these musical sessions, it's just perfect. Perfection achieve kerne ki jeeti jagti misaal ka naam hai Sajjad Ali.. I mean, to put his singing into perspective, I've never met anyone in my entire life who doesn't have a Sajjad Ali song as one of his or her all time favorite tracks. That's the influence and power of his singing. He's an absolute living legend.
Sajjad Ali is the first guy probably to bring fusion music genre to limelight in south asia due to his classical background, he sang both pop (really fast music) and ghazals and mastered both...please react to "Har Zulm" (ghazal)from him next please. Then "Katna nai" or "Lagaya Dil". If you want to see both his fusion/pop performances check out his Lux award performance (with Momina/Asim Azhar/Ali Sethi), or "Mjhy pyar tum sy nahi". Also maybe you remember his video which got famous in india from a song "Cinderella"
