Interview with an Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner

- It’s super common for new NPs - and experienced ones - to get anxious when encountering orthopedic complaints.
It’s a conundrum - on one hand, it seems like it should be simple. After all, you can feel all the musculoskeletal body structures right there.
But at the same time, there are so many (SO MANY!) nuances to each body part. And there’s a lot of ortho lingo to wrap your head around.
That’s why it’s helpful to understand exactly what an orthopedic nurse practitioner does - and what that means for working in primary care.
So sit back and enjoy - this week, orthopedic nurse practitioner, Yessica Salazar, has stopped by to talk ortho with us...and left behind so many great clinical pearls that I just know will help you in your daily practice:
✅ How to order knee X-rays the right way
✅ Her approach to medications for orthopedic complaints
✅ Non-invasive treatment options for patients

Such an encouraging interview. I'm not sure where she lives, but a lot of the Ortho jobs go to PAs. Did a lot of ortho in the ED as a tech and RN and have always loved it.
I'm glad you enjoyed this interview! Thanks for watching.
Liz & Yessica, this was so, so helpful!! I'm weirdly excited to order the appropriate plain films now for a patient with knee pain 😂
Wonderful!!
This video was amazing. I have learned so much. Pls do one for ENT! :)
Noted!
Physical Therapist here, i am so torn between goin to PA school vs goin Rn-Np(ortho). i like this video
Good Luck on your future endeavors.
What do you do when you apply for these jobs that request experience but you have none and their application system automatically rejects your application?
Great question! I recommend checking out The Résumé RX for job help and encouragement. Here are some blog posts you may find useful: www.theresumerx.com/063/ and www.theresumerx.com/112/. Good luck with your job search!
Thank you for this video Liz! I learned so much from Yessica-most importantly applying for jobs that state that they want experience but to still apply anyways!
Glad it was helpful!
What kind of training I should do to help my patients before referring them

I work in a network that very heavily uses PAs, especially for ortho, ED, and surgery. Do you think there is hope that NP school will start to be structured more like PA school, so we don't miss out on all of the musculoskeletal, short-procedure and even surgery stuff?
That's a great question, I don't know if there will be massive reform in the NP curriculum standards anytime soon, but I definitely know of lots of NPs who have done certifications or trainings like Yessica mentioned to do things like first assist in surgery.
Can you do an interview with a Derm NP? Would love to hear it.
I will add it to the list - thank you!
How do I write a note i am sorry i am graduating in may going to be new np
This is specific to the clinic you will work in. Each electronic medical record is different but the components (HPI, past medical history, assessment, and treatment plan) remain the same. They can look different depending on the practice.
Thank you so much for doing these videos! They provided wonderful information. 🙂
Glad it was helpful!
Your voice is so soothing 😊.
Oh thank you!
Best book to get for ortho in family practice
I am not aware of one book for orthopedic topic but I would recommend use of your preferred clinical resource for management recommendation. 5 minute clinic consult, UpToDate, or Medscape.
