Ok just by the title alone I'm confused. I received tanf in the past. I was a very young single mother of 2. It was 2004. I was given $118 per month. I wasn't able to have any income or I'd lose my assistance. My child support was also taken away when it was actually paid by their father to pay back the tanf. This is how I had to live until my youngest daughter was a few months old and was able to get child care assistance. I know for me tanf was basically like a Payday advance. It wasn't a grant, it was definitely a loan. Again, this was Indiana 2004.
You were not allowed income because the government wanted you to be completely reliant on them for your financial future. This would make you much more likely to vote for a bigger government to continue assisting you. Interesting don't you think?
@@iggy5895 Such requirements are always added by Republicans, not by Democrats. Republicans like to break things so that they can say "see, it doesn't work".
$118 a month and no additional income? Any job at minimum wage job ($5.15 at the time) would have given you the same amount of money at 22 hours per week, 25 if you had to pay taxes in the 10% bracket. Simply working a 40 hour week would have benefited you more. Programs like this are only meant to tie you over for a few months as you find other work. It should not be used for 2 consecutive years as the video indicated one could. It should be like an advanced as it is not free money. You borrowed money from your statesmen in a time of need. It was available for you to stay afloat. You should pay it back. I don't see anything wrong with that.

I'm curious if the work requirements finding on poverty goes both ways. It's more like: graduate college with a computer science degree, get a full time job, and pay back about 50K USD in student loans. You won't have time for sex or children.

If people could work and earn sufficient income to live decently, they would. There is a very low percentage of grifters (most of them like Brett Favre, and not actually needy families). Have you seen the process to get people back to work??? It’s a f**king joke. Sending random listings for low- and no-skilled jobs to random recipients like the act of sending job listings does anything. And somebody is getting paid to do this. Meanwhile, if a company hires someone from this pool, they get paid, too. Want to see waste in public spending? Look at all the “qualifications” Republicans have enacted to prevent people from actually getting help. How much would we save, how much more good would we do if we just gave the needy the money and left out the obstacle course???
So the TANF work requirements decreased the number of people receiving welfare and increased the number of people working. How is that NOT a good thing? In other words, why should the goal of a welfare initiative be to KEEP people on it?
Keeping people on TANF is not the goal. The question is what the goal should be. Should it be simply reducing the number of people receiving it, or should it be to help those people get out of poverty so they can become productive members of society. Those two things are not equivalent, and simply barring people from receiving TANF (through structural barriers) does nothing to help people get out of poverty. I don't see how it's a win for anyone to have a large underclass of chronically poor people.
The people were still living in poverty. If you just shut down the entire TANF program less people would be on it, but that doesn't mean people are magically benefiting. More people working is good, but to some extent they may be taking worse jobs to make ends meet and they'll be prevented from pursuing an education or other opportunities that would both benefit them and make them a more productive member of society in the long run.
