"When a Man Loves a Woman" was shot during lockdown, but Austin's girl Amberly was just within camera view. The boys did Unchained Melody justice by making the video true to the songs origins. The Righteous Brothers was actually a cover....of the original that was written for an older prison movie called "Unchained" where the main character had to decide with breaking out of prison or doing his time to get back to his love.
He really was singing from his heart in the first song, his girlfriend was in the room with him while he did the recording. If you were the one having to distort your mouth to make all of the sound effects that Adam does you wouldn't be smiling either.
Adam is laser focused when he performs. His beat box is often very complex and it's his job to keep everything on track. He often looks angry when he performs, it's just him concentrating. lol It's really easy to forget there are no instruments, just their beautiful voices. Austin sang the hell out of this cover. I agree, it's the best cover of this song I've ever heard. Unchained Melody cover is so unique and creative. This song was originally from a prison movie back in the 50's called "Unchained" so they are actually going back to it's actual roots. It was about a guy in prison contemplating whether to break out and live on the run and never see his family again, or serve out his time and hopefully get to see them again. In my opinion both these songs are theirs now. They covered them so beautifully that they own them now. Home Free are in prison for killing this cover and stealing hearts! Great reactions.
Great reactions. Isn't it amazing when you're listening to Home Free how you forget there aren't any musical instruments, just 5 unbelievable voices. Can't wait for your next double feature. Thank you for the joy.
The song originally appeared in a 50's prison movie call "Unchained" . The Righteous Brothers did a famous cover, but thousands have recorded it. Home Free definitely brought a new perspective to me too. Austin Brown had done a solo version of this on his website previously which has garnered millions of views. It is a different version and amazing too.
Austin did “Unchained Melody” as a solo, from his living room, with guitar accompaniment, about a year before they did it as a group. He dropped a bunch of covers and originals onto his channel while concerts were on hold. Austin and Tim’s cover of “My Maria” launched their Nashville side hustle / garage band. With ‘Sweet & Low’, the guys play small gigs with a couple musician friends.
Austin's cover is far superior - the band's version is so stodgy and clunky. Tim was crazy about doowop at the time and insisted that their version have this robotic rhythm, which IMHO is quite contrary to the flowing musical essence of the song. It also seemed a little uncalled for that the band should cash in on the popularity of the song. Austin's version had gone viral but there was genuine confusion about which one was which. Time has passed and Austin's version is still viral (now on over 14 million views), while this one is not particularly popular.
@@patriciamcl54 I assumed it was mostly a win-win for Austin. He gets the digital sales and streaming revenue for his version of the song. And then, over a year later, he gets his portion of the digital, streaming and album sales of the Home Free version. Someone said they make a lot more money on album sales than on the streaming services. With “Hers Ain’t Mine”, Austin’s has whatever revenue is generated on his version. If HF records it, he’ll get his portion of the revenue from that recording, plus as songwriter, he gets the additional income from that on HF album sales. I doubt a HF recording will significantly cannibalizes the revenue from his original. I’m not in the music business. This was just my assumption from how it would work based on experience in different industry.
@@patriciamcl54I love Austin’s version but I also love HF’s. To me the doo-wop sound is entirely fitting with the origins of the song/movie from the 50’s. Definitely doesn’t feel “stodgy” just a different interpretation.
Home Free usually goes to the roots of a song. This was originally written for a movie about prison called Unchained in 1955 so even the Righteous Brothers was a cover. Loved Tim and Austin’s solos. Good reaction!😍😃 In the first song, Austin and Adam killed it. I thought the use of tvs was clever.
Thanks for the double feature! Austin did a fabulous job of this classic song. Loved Percy Sledge's version, but this was taken to another level. I think it is also better than Michael Bolton's version. And remember this was done during quarantine, so the guys weren't even together. The backing harmonies are great, along with Tim's bass. And Adam's vocal percussion is outstanding. The Righteous Brothers had a big hit with "Unchained Melody" in 1965. Home Free did such a beautiful rendition of this classic song. They added an old school doo-wop feel to it. The video in prison is very fitting as this song was originally written for the 1955 prison film "Unchained".
I've always loved the late Percy Sledge's 1966 original of "When a Man Loves a Woman". The writer of the song had just been through a hard break -up and wrote "I gave you everything I had". Austin's lady was in the studio and he sings "I'll give you everything I've got" - a subtle but significant change. Austin Brown has a solo version of "Unchained Melody" on his channel that's also terrific.
I was 14 when I heard this song in 1965...on AM radio...by The Righteous Brothers. I never thought of the source of the longing or the separation. It was just a nice slow song to dance to.
They did such an amazing job on both songs😊 They are releasing a new album called As Seen On TV to celebrate their 10 year anniversary of their win on the Sing Off. It will consist of all the songs they sang on the show plus a few bonus tracks and they are doing videos for each one to. Here are the ones they released already Oh Pretty Woman Life Is A Highway Stand By Me ( to be released on Friday)

You should check out a couple of their original songs Dreamer, Land of the Free, Save the World, The Stargazer Lillies Trilogy, or check out one where Chance sings lead like their cover of I can't outrun you or Cover me up. In my opinion, Austin's "When a Man..." is better than both Sledge's original and the Bolton cover. And without that orchestra backup! (Beatboxing does not lend itself to beautiful facial expressions.) Their version of "Unchained...." is also excelling their predecessors. The original is from a 1950s movie about prison. I have the original sheet music, bought it in 1955. "Ghost" was one of many revivals over the decades. I love that you are doing a double feature! Thank you for some great memories.
This is from the prison movie Unchained from 1955. The Righteous Brothers just covered the song. So yes, missing somebody because of prison is what the song actually was about
This was a fantastic double feature. The Righteous Brothers was not the original but it was written for a 1950's prison movie, Unchained, thus the title, Unchained Melody. The black and white with the prison setting and doo wop was all done to stay true to that 50's era in which it originally came out. Love how you both interact and react to these Home Free songs. Looking forward to seeing you react to American Pie. It is such a long song you may not want to double up reactions when you do it.
The melody was hardly Unchained in the band's version - it was trussed up and forced into a heavy dirge. Austin's version is light, clean and so elegant.
Having been in high school when Unchained Melody came out (1965), I've always associated it with a soldier in Viet Nam writing back to his sweetheart in the US.
