  • Dancers of The Royal Ballet tells us about the challenges of being in the Corps de Ballet for Swan Lake. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/...
Swan Lake was Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky's first score for ballet. Its 1877 premiere was poorly received, but it has since become one of the most loved of all ballets. The twinned role of the radiant White Swan and the scheming, duplicitous Black Swan tests the full range of a ballerina's powers, particularly in the two great pas de deux of Acts II and III. Other highlights include the charming Dance of the Little Swans performed by a moonlit lake and sweeping ballroom waltzes in the splendour of the royal palace.
Anthony Dowell's glorious interpretation uses classical choreography created by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa for the ballet's revised 1895 version. Dramatic costumes emphasize the contrast between human and spirit worlds, while glowing lanterns, shimmering fabrics and designs inspired by the work of Peter Carl Fabergé create a magical setting.

Seeing her sit down at 5:23 really got to me. I've been a ballerina since I was six, and I have a problem with my metabolism that makes me faint after straining myself. I have that little scene almost every show, and I used to be afraid that I would never dance professionally if that kept happening. I can happily say that I was wrong.

I love the long costumes! Not only do they provide good contrast between the corps and Odette, but in the huge group scenes, the way they flow and flutter really screams "swan!" well and beautifully!

When I was two years old I started taking ballet classes. But later, when I was six, I had to stop because my parents were having some money issues. I've always loved ballet, and I've always wanted to be a professional at it. I always told my mother I wanted to be a dancer, and that I wanted to be on stage with millions of people watching me dance. She always told me I couldn't. She used to say:" even if you take ballet classes now, you will never be able to reach to the professional level, and why ballet? Ballet is useless."
I would always get hurt with her words.
But then, at the age of 13, in 2014, September 13th, she let me take ballet classes. Why? Well, I had a depression that summer. I had lost 15 kilos, and I was always crying. My mother got worried so she asked for help. My mother's friends had a daughter and she was a physicist ( I think this is how it's written " psicóloga " in English) and when my mother talked to her, she said she should let me do something I love. That would make me forget my problems for some time and it would make me feel better.
I started dancing. I was really bad, but I never stoped trying. I would dance everywhere. I am now in two dance academies to improve my dance. I don't want to be a professional dancer anymore. I just want to dance as a hobby.

Even if the audience doesn't care often times its almost impossible if to become a high status ballet dancer if you fall out of the norm of tall but not too tall and thin yet muscular just not too muscular if you are bigger than a b cup your chances are slashed even lower. Its ruthless and they are cruel. Their standards are very white centric

I'm so glad the Royal Ballet dropped these costumes. Swan's skirts look as if they were made from shopping bags. Apart from that I agree they have the toughest job as at times they get to stay in ackward positions for minutes while the principals are dazzling the audience and then they have to stand up and gracefully put the ballet together.

I did ballet for 10 years. I started in kindergarden, because my grandma thought it would do me good. After that I went to a primary school for dancers. I hated it, wanted to quit (too much bullying), but my mother forced me to keep dancing. After a while I started to love it, especially when pointe shoes were introduced. But my mother made me quit, she didn't want me to enjoy it. I miss it so much, I loved the full house perfofmances. Well, that is one future stolen from me.

I appreciate this bc a lot of time attention is placed on the leads and I believe the body is what brings the whole story together. They are also very in sync that it’s easier to take them for granted and just focus on that one person, the lead...but they are exceptional as a unit moving as one

  • @beritbunny

I ADORE the Corps de ballet!!! If they are not at their best, the whole production seems shabby, and the orchestra dwarfs the dance entirely! When they are sharp and wonderful, the whole show is just amaaaaaaaazing, and one has the feeling that you are seeing something incredible that will only happen this once in all of history! They make the magic! We recently saw NYCB’s The Sleeping Beauty, and I totally go for the corps in that! The Garland Dance is EVERYTHING! I don’t envy Aurora’s hard job, but I find much of the (yes, it has difficulty!) choreography for her role tedious! I’m here for the good fairies and the corps! Of course, I’m also here for the Tchaikovsky!!! 😂 Keep it up, beautiful Corps members, you are the heart of the thing! 🌌✨❤️🥰

Em Ballerina the royal ballet often keeps ex dancers as masters/mistresses - many of the character artists are also ballet masters/mistresses as they know the ballet very week but they can't really perform fully in a ballet like the younger people do so they have more acting roles like sleeping beauty's parents and the king of hearts (from Alice in wonderland /the RB production)

Sir Derek Dean yelling, calling the Corps dancers elephants with turtle necks, his only praise in 1 hr documentary was „ it’s actually not bad“. I'm on the fence about the swan corps costume. For me, it is the length of them. I like the flowy nature of the material but they should, in my opinion be much shorter to show off more of the choreography. The current length hides too much legwork, imho. The various angles the corps line create is so much a part of Swan Lake and not being able to see half the legs of the swans cuts off so many of those traditional "swan" movements and positions. Love the headpieces though!

    • @CindyWu1665

No, you missed too many years. At you age most of the girls will have pointe shoes and you won't even be prepared

Patricia Zhou started ballet when she was 13 and she's now a professional ballerina. In an interview at that time her mom said she stayed in the ballet studio everyday for hours and wouldn't leave. Go ahead if you want to give it a shot but also bear in mind that you'll need to work a lot harder to catch up compare to other girls who have been learning ballet uninterrupted. but do give it a try if you really love it :)

I did a performance of Swan Lake with my school and I was in the corp de ballet and one of the 4 swans. I can say it's every bit as hard as this video says it is. I think my feet still hurt.

I agree...I really dislike costumes that are too long. I want to be able to see all of their graceful movements, not just their arms and feet. And especially when that many dancers are on the stage all you see is whirling material.

Little fun fact: Ballerinas actually danced in that style of costume before the modern tutus.

Ich first read corps in the meaning of a dead person. But considering the hard work they've got, corps de ballet in this sense would be also very fitting

That is the price of beauty unfortunately. Hopefully someone will come out with a new design for ballet shoes that will not torture their feet, but I do love ballet and love watching them dance.

Pointe shoes aren't torturous. You do get blisters, but so do runners, gymnasts, and aerialists. If done correctly, pointe shoes won't leave lasting damage.

I wish I can dance ballet but ever since I tried it out my feet would constantly cramp. When I normally walk or run, it cramps. I was disappointed that I can never try having regular ballet classes. Even if I'm disappointed that I can't dance the ballet, I have piano lessons that can help me play the wonderful music offered in this world. ^_^

Agent Argon How old are you? You probably have a more stubborn body and stubborn feet, that doesn't mean you can't dance. Not all people have perfect feet from nature, in fact most don't. Cramps don't stay there forever and if you really love dance, you have to learn how to dance through them. They will slowly go Away when the foot gets used to the movement. You have to try to endure the pain for 1-2 months and then it will gradually go away. In point shoes though, pain is regular, it's just that you get used to it. Everything that is ballet and dance involves pain. But pay attention to your cramps, they may be caused by lack of calcium, bad eating, seating in akward positions, high heels all the time etc. And don't compare ballet to running. Running does about the opposite that ballet does. It actually shortens and stiffens every joint and tendon, so we dancers try to stretch immediately after.

islandhorsetaker Claudia Dean too? Wasn’t she the one in the 2012 Royal Ballet company class video, with her blonde hair in braids, turning like a demon during centre work? What a shame!
