9:40 the flickering is likely a wlroots thing if you happen to have an Nvidia card, and can usually be fixed by using Arch's patched wlroots-nvidia package instead. This affects me on Sway as well if using the unpatched version

7:00 the script didn't work because exec replaces the shell with the command (in this case "dwl-bar", lookup the man page for more info)
so the correct code would be:
#!/bin/sh
dwl-bar &
exec dwl
