It must be real hard to convince modern people in a first world country to think of themselves as property of someone else. This is one of the things that lead me away from christianity. I am a free willed individual. Why would I ever want to give up all autonomy for someone else? I didn't do it for my parents, and I certainly won't do it for a deity I can't be sure exists.
Wish these people cared 10% as much for the children already here as they say they do for the unborn. Not only should choice remain legal it should be made retroactive in many cases.

LTrotsky 21st Century I think you know who (a pretty famous writer, who managed to find an audience from royalty who didn't usually like that type of play). Of course it takes a willing society, which is why the US has been slow going in terms of progress.

As to why the chief imperialist power is regressing culturally, it seems to me that this phenomenon has a strong connection to the character of class relations. The reason the right, in particular (though the left is not immune), deny science - even deny the basic terms of rational exchange - is because, imo, it is necessary to maintain class rule. That is, capitalism is a subjective ideology; the less able this ideology is able to sustain a society the more the ruling class turns to subjectivism to maintain their position. This leads to the triumph of subjectivism in public discourse, which (imo) is exactly why nearly the entire right wing of the US, the most closely aligned to the interests of financial capital, is also the least connected to objective analysis.

Personally I feel these guys have an à la carte approach to the bible (aka à la carte christians). They pick and choose the passages with which they personally can agree, preach those, and selectively cast out the ones that contradict their own personal opinions/feelings/morals/etc.

I went to a fundamentalist Christian high school, and from what I've heard from people I actually trust is that a girl got severely raped by at least one, maybe more, members of our basketball team. And it was all over the school, it got reported to the principal, and what does he do? Fucking sweeps it under the rug because he/they are good athletes and the playoffs were coming up.
Fucking despicable.

If the Christian version of god is true, he claims to give you free will, but if you examine the traits Christians prescribe to god, the only conclusion you can come to is that your free will is an illusion. If the Christian god set forth with this divine plan for all of eternity and already knows what choices you will make before you even make them there is only one outcome your life will ever have, thusly no free will, your god has predetermined everything you will ever do. If your soul is "linked to your body" then it only makes sense that it matures with your body.
If it matures with your body then as your brain develops, and your consciousness develops, so does your soul.
That makes sense, the more "conscious" you are the more of a soul you have, if you believe in such things. Then a fish has less of a soul than an ape. An amoeba or insect aren't conscious at all so they don't really have a soul at all.
So if we are talking about a fetus that doesn't have a functional brain then they have no consciousness so it would stand to reason that they don't have a soul at all.
If the soul is tied to the body, and develops with the body, then it doesn't really occur until later when the baby is a thinking creature. So this guy should be pro-abortion as long as it is before the point when the fetus is conscious and therefore has a soul.
funnily enough that is the actual biblical take on the matter, sort of. according to doctrine baby doesnt recieve soul till first breath. this sounds like yaaahweeh and is the holy spirit (what we call air) entering body and delivering soul. as such the fetus is of little consequence, cept for one thing, the women is property, and like a cow has no say in prenancy, abortion or near anything. if the bible didnt have this stance then the death rate of babies at or before birth would be gods fault.....never gave the soul a chance. after birth, fuck u sinner, free will.

I have actually heard this argument before, but it was in a anti-suicide rant. This Christian pastor was saying that the "real tragedy" of suicide isn't someone losing their life, it was the "lie that our bodies are ours to do as we want with". So basically, your body (and soul) is the property of God, you're only renting it, and if you do things with that body that God disapproves of (sex, drugs, whatever) you'll pay for it.
That really crystalizes what religion is for me.
Even if we made the ridiculous assumption that God is real, why would it make any sense to worship him? He's like a celestial Kim Jong Un! People worship him out of fear of punishment, not genuine love. Anyone who is genuinely worth loving doesn't need to use threats. If anyone I admired started doing that, I'd lose all respect for them immediately. If a God created me, it wouldn't make them exempt from all moral scrutiny; I wouldn't blindly accept my parents' actions if they started going around killing and torturing people, so why apply that stupid logic when it's God?
