    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
Something there is about you that strikes a match in me
Is it the way your body moves or is it the way your hair blows free?
Or is it because you remind me of something that used to be
Something’ that crossed over from another century?
    [Verse 2]
Thought I’d shaken the wonder and the phantoms of my youth
Rainy days on the Great Lakes, walk-in’ the hills of old Duluth
There was me and Danny Lopez, cold eyes, black night and then there was Ruth
Something there is about you that brings back a long-forgotten truth
    [Verse 3]
Suddenly I found you and the spirit in me sings
Don’t have to look no further, you’re the soul of many things
I could say that I’d be faithful, I could say it in one sweet, easy breath
But to you that would be cruelty and to me it surely would be death
    [Verse 4]
Something there is about you that moves with style and grace
I was in a whirlwind, now I’m in some better place
My hand’s on the sabre and you’ve picked up the baton
Something’ there is about you that I can’t quite put my finger on

Since the mid sixties I rediscover him in an album I'm just hearing for the first time. This album I picked up just after being at THE LAST WALTZ. Then in 1986?, not sure, I was in one of those HEAR MUSIC shops & fell crazy for INFIDELS & every song I heard I related to the previous administration, or in the case of SWEETHEART LIKE YOU, I thought about my mother dating losers who took on dates to dive bars; ya know, the lines, "What's a sweetheart like you doin' in a dump like this?" or thought about my old man who passed in '88 with the line, "Steal a little & they throw you in jail, steal a lot & they make you King." Yet this album was released in '83.

Finally this great, great timeless song on RUclips!! These lyrics alone could have won the man a Nobel prize. As a mad collector I have more than 70 copies of the 7' of this song on vinyl, and 15 copies of the vinyl album, add to this a few copies on CD, music cassette and 8-track. That's how great I think this song is. The lyrics ...
Something there is about you that strikes a match in me
Is it the way your body moves or is it the way your hair blows free
Or is it because you remind me of something that used to be
Something that's crossed over from another century ?

His beloved has touched him, very very deeply! Like--REALLY deeply! ("suddenly I found you . . you're the soul of many things".) This is one remarkable woman.
HOWEVER: Dylan is VERY CAREFUL and EXPLICIT in telling his beloved that THERE IS NO WAY THAT HE IS **EVER** GOING TO BE FAITHFUL TO HER!!
That is hilarious--and brilliant! Any lesser songwriter would have been either pledging unwavering faithfulness, or at least, would have remained diplomatically silent about his intention to still sleep with other women. Not Dylan!
I LOVE this song; but how can you not roll on the floor laughing at a passionate, sincere love song in which the man makes explicit that, despite the deep things she has awakened in him--NO WAY is he ever going to be **faithful**. One wonders if Dylan didn't have tongue firmly in cheek, while writing those lines.
What a great sense of humor Dylan has!

Just wanted to see what he saw as a child. Like I went up the Glenshane Pass after my mum died and walked around as I wanted to see something of what she saw as a child in that bleak cold place especially in winter. X

I appreciate the bit of comedy that Dylan injected into these lyrics. Of course, I'm speaking of the lines where (I paraphrase):
'So sorry, baby--you're so Goddess-like and all; but I have to warn you that there is NO WAY that I am never going to cheat on you!--You can count on the fact that I *WILL* CHEAT ON YOU. I just can't help it. It would kill me to "keep it in my pants"! A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, though; am I right?! But you are still a Goddess to me, NEVER FORGET THAT WHILE I'M CHEATING ON YOU, because I will need you to forgive me afterwards (i.e., after EACH TIME I cheat).'
It's RIGHT THERE IN THE SONG!!

It’s such an honest song, as well as being musically and lyrically brilliant. Dylan clearly choosing to follow his muse at the cost of love and stability. That gave us all so much joy through his music but must have cost him (and others) a lot of pain.

or is it the way your hair blows free?
Or is it because you remind me of
    something that used to be
Somethin' that crossed over from another century?
    Thought I'd shaken the wonder
and the phantoms of my youth
Rainy days on the Great Lakes,
walkin' the hills of old Duluth.
There was me and Danny Lopez,
cold eyes, black night and then there was Ruth
    Something there is about you
that brings back a long-forgotten truth.
    Suddenly I found you
and the spirit in me sings
Don't have to look no further,
you're the soul of many things.
I could say that I'd be faithful,
I could say it in one sweet, easy breath
But to you that would be cruelty
and to me it surely would be death.
    Something there is about you
that moves with style and grace
    I was in a whirlwind
now I'm in some better place.
    My hand's on the sabre
and you've picked up the baton
    Somethin' there is about you
that I can't quite put my finger on

Great album. Why don’t more ppl talk about it? It’s so good. Even Dylanheads I used to know. Swore they knew what Bob had for breakfast, all about his mental health, how many women he’d slept with, his complex ideas on religion, his shoe size. But they never once mentioned Planet Waves. Obviously they knew feck all about anything. Not mentioning PW a key to all the rest. But what is it with men now hitting their 60s 70s who obsess about someone they don’t understand? I don’t understand that. And no amount of buyin box sets seems to make them better.

Campanile Trinity College Dublin in the snow. Sadly I didn't take this one. A lot of very happy times there 81-85. I lived just off to the left from Feb 84 to June 85. At times no reason to leave the grounds except to visit all the great pubs on our doorstep outside the walls. Love the cobblestones. The chapel and dining hall which caught fire in maybe 84 off to the left. Exam hall and a reading room on right. Long library to right of Campanile and Book of Kells centre. As graduate I can get in free for life and don't have to fuckin queue as don't love queueing as not English and can bring three friends. Also access to a lovely room with coffee n newspapers to side of chapel. Now wondering what rooms Wilde n Beckett stayed in. Feck I might've slept in Oscar's bed. He'd never have run off with a young man if he'd met me. The theatre was called Players when I was there. Now Samuel Beckett theatre. But the bastards have yet to acknowledge Wilde FFS. Joyce went to UCD as he was Catholic.

How ‘bout I get tested by you?
Robbie’s guitar is out of tune with too much treble - whiny. Sounds thrown-together.
Examples of songs with good lyrics AND good music:
      1) “Tonight I’ll be Staying Here with you” (in G): Brilliantly inventive bridge: He goes to the 4 (C) but uses the minor. Back to the tonic. (Does it twice). Then this magnificent turn-around: Ab, C, Am, D, C, Bm, Am, G. Great music. Great Lyrics.
      2. “You’re a Big Girl Now” in C. Pretty much straight blues progression but he adds something that makes it timeless. He approaches the tonic with 3 (Em) then 2 (Dm). Driving bass line. Heart-wrenching lyrics: “told himself he didn’t care. Pushed the window open wide. Felt that emptiness inside.”
What do you love about the music in “Something there is about you?”

Neurons move in my brain. A through just hit me. Farmers had a moad towards me. Farmers know thier land and if I not but if I was I sure farm would have to charge and grow plants not animals to feed us. People who say there wise but not in my mind. Yes a judgement call for me only. No hardness through because I can't. I fall his way. Why if you say because you're a teller in my life and other all one.
