At this point, after seeing the capabilities that his son was wielding, and witnessing how brightly he was shining through it, then and only then did he realize what he had wasted, and what he neglected for so long, "his son's own ambitions and dreams". A father's resolve isn't to create someone that resembles him...but to create something better.

You forgot the most important part about Johnny’s dad. Johnny’s dad, in an effort to get to Johnny before the song finishes, performs feats of strength and agility indicative to gorillas, which were not seen by any of the gorillas throughout the entire film. It’s the most animal any of the animals actually animals through the entire movie. That’s how desperate he was to get to his son and tell him how much he loved him and how much he supported him for following his dream of singing. His paternal instincts broke the wild side out of his character into the forefront, and I am all for it.

It's similar to what happens in Sing 2 with Johnny, when he gets frustrated with the Dance Teacher and breaks his skateboard.
Johnny, however, is afraid of that side of himself till he realizes that he can focus this energy into something else. Like he did during his performance in the show.

      There’s also some symbolism in how the moon had been a man-made prop in the performances it featured in, up until Mina’s where it revealed the actual moon itself.     Another win is Rosita's growth, starting from the selection scene. She's so "invisible" we hardly see her behind the others, but she is there, and the fact that Buster calls her after he dismissed everyone is kind of a build-up to her own character growth;
She's quiet and simple, hidden in the audience, but has amazing talent, and with Guenther's help she slowly lets go of her reservations and truly blooms to the point of being in charge of rebuilding the stage and encouraging everyone.

I'm surprised that Johnny's dad first seeing Johnny on the TV didn't get a win.
The way he just swells up with pride watching his son absolutely crush the stage. "That's Johnny! THAT'S MY SON!"
And then the silent wide-eyed horrified realization of just how huge and horrible mistake he made. "...that's my son..."
Followed by him going to the window to think a moment, seeing the lights from the performance in the distance... and then just deciding, at that moment, not a god damn thing in the world is going to stop him from being there to tell Johnny how proud he is, that he loves him, and he is sorry.
I felt like that was one of the single most powerful moments of the film, and does a WHOLE LOT with just the delivery of two lines and facial expressions... like, near PERFECT cinematography.

I think it’s also worth noting that Buster, while while not always the most considerate, does actually have an eye for talent. He realized the potential of putting rosita and Gunter together. His notes on Johnny’s sheet (seen when Johnny attempts to take the locked chest) mention how he feels Johnny lacks discipline which he kind of does and improves on that. And even though Ash didn’t like cheesy pop she WAS good at performing it and Buster recognized that just from her backup singing in a heavy rock song. And when he actually did hear her sing a piece of her own song he immediately recognized her strength with that and wanted it added to the show.

"Sing" has a special place in my heart. It was the first movie that my godchild fell asleep on me holding him while watching. I didn't think it was Scarjo singing, but I was SHOCKED to learn it was. I L-O-V-E Tori Kelly because she's such a great singer and such a sweetheart in person. She treats her fame like a gift and her fans like people. She even asked me to sing for her and I sang "Eye on the Sparrow" which had her in tears. I'm not bragging. I'm just saying that she's been around epic singers and yet still can enjoy and feel the emotions from "the little guy." I was going through a rough time then and she hugged me as if we were best friends without knowing what was wrong.
The movie was fun and I laughed at it because I know people who remind me of these characters. Gunther is my cousin Vincent, Mike is my brother. . .but bro can't sing, Ash is every girl I work with apparently, and Meena is me because I always could sing, but was and still am, shy until I get going. Then I just perform without thinking. Like Meena, my voice and song choice was soulful and shocked people who hadn't heard it yet. The emotions that "Sing" brings me are part of my memories, nostalgia, and new takes on great aongs. Love it.❤

The movie manages to give a reason for all these modern songs, it's a talent show and people (animals actually) just pick the songs that resonate the most with them, just like any real life competition would and it manages to make interesting characters all through the movie along with the high stakes it makes for a great movie!

Another bit I really love is how it’s during the “regrets” part of Mike’s song that Johnny’s dad shows up, apologises, hugs hiw son and says “I’m proud of you”. Just. Stab in the gut a few times and yank my heart out. Also, he didn’t stay out of prison either bc he was also like “they’ll be looking for me. Come visit though, yeah?” so he fully understood that he was in the wrong both with the law and with his son and that the only reason he broke out (which we saw was fairly easy for him to do, so the only reason he hadn’t prior was bc he didn’t have any will or motivation to leave) was to see his son in an attempt to start mending there relationship after he recognised he had completely destroyed it.
So many people hate on this movie, saying it tries to focus on too many things at once, there’s too much overlap, heck, even that the only overarching plot is a talent show contest. So for someone to finally show the praise one of my favourite movies deserves is such a great Christmas present. Thank you Cinema Wins. 💚

If he'd charged $100 to enter, which none of them would have paid, it still would barely cover expenses. I can't imagine people wanting to pay $5 just to get rejected before they could participate in the contest.

    • @uafgames9061
      @uafgames9061 27 дней назад +1

@BonaparteBardithion yeah, no one would pay to be rejected, but they would definitely pay for the *chance* that they'd actually get in. People pay all the time to audition for shows n stuff, it helps cover for production costs, prize money, etc. Sure, some people would probably turn around, not wanting to pay, but the amount of people that'd stay to audition, even after finding out there's a cost to do so, would likely greatly outnumber the people that left.

At 12:32, there's definitely gotta be another win here: I made the same joke about how Rosita should get an engineering degree when I saw this movie yesterday for the first time, but she's actually putting her knowledge to use here in rebuilding the theatre. It's such an interesting character trait that she just has, it's never focused on or explained and I kinda like that about her. This movie's all about her performing, but that doesn't mean she can't have other aspects to her character. It's the same with the others now that I think of it, for example, Meena is good at baking and Mike likes skateboarding.

  • @CameronMetrejean

ALSO ALSO realizing that the rebuilding of the theater to the lyrics “Once there was a way to get back homeward” not only is signifying the theater’s glory days being the same song that was sung at the beginning when the theater was at its height, but also signifies Buster and the others finding their “way back home” to the theater they all loved

Genuinely, this movie has a lot more to me than what Zootopia has.
I know it might just be the music and stuff, but this feels like a real world lived in.
Instead of just a tension of "racism" and desire to solve a mystery throughout the whole movie, it's just a "natural" world where animals can be anything they want. Some rob banks. Some have touchy relationships. Some have secret talents of singing that should not be hidden away.
I don't know how to describe it. It's not a movie of epic proportions like an Avengers movie or a mastercraft Disney/Pixar movie, it's just a good, solid, and pretty fun movie with some catchy songs to enjoy and remember it by....

I think the reason you feel that way is because Sing is a lot more grounded in our reality, whereas Zootopia created what's essentially a high fantasy setting. The animals in Sing are quite literally just us but as critters (which is not a bad thing, but obviously is less original), whereas the animals in Zootopia have a significantly different societal structure.
I love Zootopia, but one thing that definitely didn't age well was the whole commentary on discrimination, and I think the reason why is both because of how hamfisted it was and because the social dynamics of the world of Zootopia just flat out don't translate well to ours.

So people can say what they want about Illumination. For the most part, I agree that they only really make cookie cutter, safe as hell yearly movies that bring in a younger demographic. All except for Despicable Me 1, which I think is a genuine animated classic and masterpiece for its year, alongside Megamind.
But I genuinely think Sing 1 is one of the most underrated Illumination movies, my second favorite from them and is actually extremely decent to even great. This is not a bad movie at all and I hate that most people chalk it up to nothing but "another Ilumination movie" when its honestly got enough to set it apart from it's other pieces from Illumination and manages to feel genuine. The characters are likeable, the music covers are genuinely great, the visuals are quite great, and the whole ending half with the whole concert is a bop, lets not kid ourselves. Along with having some genuinely great messages like not letting yourself down and to own up to your mistakes. And some would argue its just a pop song generator but like... That's the point? Its a talent show and a musical. Its not just random needle drops to be random or make the kids get excited, they are songs that resonate with the characters with the end goal of it being a concert that saves a *theater*. You know, a place where musicals take place. So yeah, they are a bit cash grabby but at least they make sense and aren't too on the nose.
And the characters all have some pretty genuine struggles, they aren't there just to be there. Rosa is tired of her everyday housewife life and wants to break free, Johnny wants a life outside of crime and just wants his father to accept him for that, Ash is trying to deal with a break of that has actually emotionally hurt her and is coping through the show, and more, and the other ones too all of them are good. They aren't just there to be there, they have actual reasons and I think the movie actually juggles the glimpses and growth of their lives rather well. And Buster doesn't want to tarnish his dad's legacy, hes the most morally grey with what he does through the whole movie. Hes got an "end justifies the means" mindset but it's not like he doesn't care for his castmates either. I think he's a decent protagonist.
And a lot more. Unlike most Ilumination things, I mostly only have positive to say over this one. And I really think people didn't and still don't give this movie a proper chance. Its not a masterpiece, far from it. But it is definitely Illumination's best work since the first Despicable Me. Give this one a chance people, it really deserves it.

"all characters have some genuine struggles, they aren't just there to be there"
Except for Gunter. He's there for a good time.
I legitimately respect that Rosita's arc is about, as you put it, breaking free without throwing away her marriage or role as a mother. Her family was never the villian. She just needed something for self-fulfilment and her family completely supports that once they learn about it.

When the world feels overwhelming I sit down open a soda and watch a wholesome guy react to movies wholesomely, so thanks Cinema Wins.

I think about this so much. Who the heck would’ve won!?!? Everyone was FANTASTIC! I’m saying it’s between Johnny and Meena. Though I love Johnny with my whole heart, I’m leaning more towards Meena. I mean, she broke the damn wall of the stage, for crying out loud! But everyone was amazing.

I don't think we could get a clear winner, considering that all of them are outstanding in their own ways.
But my vote would go for Johnny, too.
If I looked at it more professionally, I think either Rosita's and Gunther's double act or Meena's act would've made the cut.
Sure, Mike had a great voice, but it came more to who made the masses truly move.
And those prof choices are also just slim speculations, because, like I said, each of them is unique and talented in their own special way. You can't really compare them with one another :3

In all honesty, when Johnny was getting ready to steal the money from Moon's office, when he finds the note papers of each singer, he was the only one that Moon put an extra note on, "Natural Born Singer" Johnny would've had a good advantage because of that.

What I absolutely loved was how they used "Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight":
~ In the opening, the 'original version' was a nostalgic throwback to the theatre's glory days and how it inspired young Buster
~ After the theatre collapsed, the 'melancholy version' conveys how crushed and hopeless all the principal characters feel
~ At the end, the 'reprise version' heralds their triumph and a new "home" which signifies all that they've overcome together
Exact same song and lyrics, but simply adjusting the tempo to give it three entirely different meanings throughout the movie.
PS ~ I absolutely adore Mike's 'Simon Cowell' moment. He'd been deriding Meena as frumpy and worthless... until he actually heard her sing. He's so completely awestruck by her ability that he takes off his hat in reverence and (like Simon Cowell) just gapes at her with "I want her babies" eyes.
    Edit: One more thing...
Eddie doesn't get enough credit. Nana has probably disowned him and he's liable to get kicked out of even the pool house, but he still comes in clutch for his pal Buster - not just loaning him a pair of Speedos, but actually stripping down on the spot to help wash cars; then again by putting in the effort to learn how to operate the sound board for the show.
Time and again, Eddie's life would be so much easier if he actually did slack off as much as his parents think he does. He really has nothing to gain and everything to lose by helping Buster with his schemes. Eddie wouldn't really even be a bad person for simply turning Buster down - less 'walking out' and more just not actively 'walking in' in the first place.
Eddie very much deserves at least a dozen more Wins all for his own. We all need an Eddie in our lives, and should strive to be an Eddie for anyone we care about.

Johnny, by letting his talent show brought out of his dads shadow
Rosita, showing her amazing singing and dancing to the world ( might had helped her husband to pay a bit more attention to her)
Ash, got out of a toxic relationship with jerk face lance
Porsha, broke free from her dad, set free her singing talent
Calloway, accepting that his wife (ruby) is gone and she wants him to be happy performing again
Meena, her stage fright over came, and from what I remember from the sequel a boyfriend

4:30 Fun Fact: it was this performance that convinced Elton John and the other performance to give Taron the role for Elton John. They already had previous engagements with Kingsman, so the fact that he sings Rocketman (be it in an “Atlantic” accent) was the final encouragement they needed.

Sing has a lot of relationships going on as well as a colorful cast of characters that are a joy to watch interact and challenge each other.
I'd also love to see more people discuss it as well as other unspoken movies like Spirit Stallion of the Cimmaron, The Corpse Bride, Rise of the Guardians, Guardians of G'ahoole (yes, I know the books are better), and 9

Sing is such an unassuming film. I wasn’t interested at all in it when I saw the trailers and only ended up watching it because I was planning on doing a review for Rock Dog and figured I oughtta compare to the last animated movie about musically inclined animals and I was really not expecting to become as big a fan of it as I was. And almost every person I’ve introduced the movie to seems to have a similar attitude “huh, I enjoyed that a lot more than I thought.” It really is a shame it came out the same year as Zootopia which is clearly the better film, but if you’re gonna ask me which film do I watch and enjoy more then it’s hands down Sing.

Out of all the Illumination films, I think Sing comes closest to using their true storytelling potential. Most of their movies are cookiecutter, but objectively gorgeous, at least Sing manages to juggle several emotionally charged arcs, if only they didn't play it so safe, they could really compete with better films.

Surprised you didn’t win the utter devastation that the end of the second act has in this film. I mean I’m thinking the worst that’s gonna happen is buster is going to get found out for not having money and Nana is going to reject financing the show, but I never imagined that the entire theater would just collapse. 🤯
Sidenote: The first time I watch this movie was in two parts and the first part ended right after the collapse so I was pretty anxious on finishing at the next day to find out what all would happen.

I respect a lot of the work put into this movie, but I feel like a lot of the songs were there not because of a person with creative vision, but because a corporate executive thought I'd sell better than an original piece. Which is "cringe".
Also I really don't care for musicals. Very few songs in general peak my interest and many edgy 2 kool 4 skool teens think the same which I feel contributed to the problem.

@@CBionic77 I mean insofar as it's a film with animals? Sure… but isn't that overtly reductionist and ignores all the classist (predator/prey) symbolism associated with Zootopia? The singular gripe I have with this movie is the short runtime compared to all the parallel storylines. An extra 30 minutes tacked on to it to dig a little deeper to the main cast (outside of Buster) would have given people a real connection with what we can only call supporting cast. It's difficult to feel anything other than a "Man, that sucks" level of empathy for those you feel like you've just met. Sing 2 likely won't have this issue because the cast is already set, and we'll have a general understanding of the cast before the Title Card rolls.

As a store clerk who used the microphone for announcements from time to time, I would absolutely hype Rosita the fuck up if I saw her dancing in the store like that, accurate representation of our shenanigans with the microphone when the store is empty (or almost empty)
Ps: in case you're wondering, the microphone for a store can be in many places, for my situation it was a small one at the registers, and an example of what we usually do when the store is empty, almost every day we had an announcement for about 15mins after closing time, even if a client was taking their sweet ass time and keeping us there for longer than normal, we would just turn on the mic and say "dear colleagues and possible slow customers, we are about to leave the registers in 2 minutes, so come pay for your stuff or you can fuck right off, good night and see you tomorrow"
