I’m from the Bay Area (alameda county) and my husband has a job opportunity in Vancouver WA. We had no plans or intentions of moving but an opportunity came and now we are researching the area. I’ve been binge watching your videos and they have been very helpful. My husband and I feel like making the move might be a really good choice. Thanks for making so many helpful videos!
Congratulations on the new job! I'm happy that I could be helpful to you. I know it's scary/intimidating/overwhelming to move so far from where you're used to. Let me know if I can be of any help to you!
I think on the political front it's way more Respectful than Phoenix AZ about different views. I personally had a conversation w someone who was completely opposite views about the vaccine. In phx this conversation would cause some high emotions. I'm personally for the vaccine and she wasn't but we agreed 💯 together it was a personal choice and we weren't going to attack one another about our views
Yes! Thank you for sharing. I feel like all political views are either welcome and/or tolerated here and while I disagree on certain things with people, they should have to unequivocal right to that freedom - pretty foundational for America in my opinion.
My husband and I are relocating to vancouver at the end of Feb and we couldn't agree more about phoenix. people are so aggressive in phoenix about politics. We're glad to hear PNW people respect political differences!
@Living in the Pacific Northwest with Hal Byrd Liar. There is zero tolerance in Vancouver. None. Support government lies or be gone. That is truth and you know it.
I'm not necessarily looking to be around people like me, I just don't want to be around people that want to overthrow my county with violence. Still doing research on the pacific NW. Thanks for the video.
For someone who lived in Vancouver for 15 years, my perspective is a little different. When I fist moved there I was elated and absolutely loved the weather. But then as the years went on, the lack of sunshine and brightness does create a longing for sun and cloudless skies. I would say from last week in October to around June the weather is mostly overcast and a majority of the those days it rains. The climate vibe can feel a bit despondent when you live in it for over a decade like I have. If you don't get outside when you have those rare speckling of sunny days throughout the winter, it can make it feel as if the sunny days are even less frequent. So you have to make sure you get outside when the sun peaks through the clouds and you get a partly sunny day. This can help ease the winter blues. You will also have to deal with moss and algae on your roof, and you need to keep an eye out for mold in attics.
To your point about your clients daughter-in-law and their family having an issue finding a seat at a dialysis clinic is the absolute truth. I worked in the outpatient clinic for a few years. It's an absolute hassle. I hope now, they were able to find a location. Love this video.
Working in a dialysis clinic, it was absolute truth when this video came out. We are now doing much better in clinics so hopefully everything turned out ok.
Hal as you know its been a great move for me. I love the weather, the people are wonderful and the activities are plentiful. Hidden gems is a great way to put the food choices. It's like going on a scavenger hunt, when you find one you're surprised and happy. Being from California I most defiantly do not miss the relentless heat, drought, fires, smoke and the insane cost of living in the San Francisco Bay area.
@@halbyrd_ Wonderful, feel free to invite folks you think will have a good time. I do get into Portland for a variety of reasons, not so much for food yet but will in the near future.
Another excellent and informative video, Hal. I'm hoping to find work that is congruent with the cost of living in the Vancouver area. My impression is that Vancouver is similar to Reno, but with big water! I'm glad you mentioned health care. I do have a chronic and serious health condition, but like my friend in Sequim, I don't mind periodic trips to California for appointments...including my hair stylist. In terms of diversity v homogeneity, I like people who are kind to others. The restaurants you mentioned sound great (I'm a pescatarian). I think we get back what we put into a place. Do you ever do videos on affordable housing for the 55+ demographic? I work with active seniors, and am also a "young" active senior myself. Thanks for all you do...hope your husband's ankle is better!
Thanks Felicia! He's not quite back 100% but we're working on it. Hopefully, you find good providers here! I haven't done videos on 55+ communities, but I help clients in that area of course.
Vancouver WA...a suburb of Portland with a small/big town problem. It's cool if you like the burbs life. But if you're not in Seattle or Vancouver BC then you're not going to be in a major city. If you want cheap (for PNW) then go for Vancouver WA.
Hal, Are the healthcare options/challenges easier to manage if you are able to travel to Portland, or were you including Portland area resources in your comments in the video? Thanks.
No I wasn't including Portland in my comments. From what I've heard (neither of us has been in the hospital here), the hospitals are great. It's the primary care & specialty services that seem to be more difficult to navigate. I have a doctor I like a lot & don't have issues getting appointments. But the ortho for Jarret was ridiculous
There is no perfect place for sure but after living in the PNW for almost 24 years, I prefer the weather here than most states other than CA which I cannot afford to live so it’s not even a consideration for me. We thought about moving to Nashville but they get quite a bit of rain, the summers are very humid, the numerous bugs and bad allergies just make it a no go for me. I use to complain about the weather years ago but I think there are other worse places to live in terms of weather. I am now considering the Vancouver area to retire. Coming for a visit to check it out. Funny… been here for so many years and never been to Vancouver. Looking forward to my trip in August. I have an eye on Ridgefield in particular. Really enjoy your videos.
We’re retired. Health care is very important to us cause of existing health conditions. Is Vancouver not a good place for retirees in their old age because of the city not having a good health care?
I find that the quality of care we've received has been good. It just may take longer to find a PCP. Also, if you have existing conditions it seems most of my clients are able to utilize the Portland area healthcare & it's covered by insurance even in another state. So I'd look into that.
I understand this title is click bait. But after linving in Vancouver, WA for 23 years, it is getting really bad! We had to leave due to homeless really overtaking the town. Police are quitting. My girl didnt feel safe. It's a hell hole.
I see very few homeless people in Vancouver compared to other similar-sized cities. I've definitely had a different experience than you, and I've lived here for the last five years.
@@graham974 You must not live near downtown Vancouver, WA. We had to leave after over 2 decades there. Just not safe anymore. Sure Portland and San Fran have more homeless and tents. But Vancouver is slowly getting worse. Good luck there!
@@graham974 I suggest you move to a Red State, vs crazy blue states with pro homeless amd anti police policies! Only getting worse in your area! Huge quality of life improvement.
Housing will never come down. Outsiders have blown the market out of the water. Homeless is nuts. If you can't see it, you are blind. Also, stay out of portland. Cost of living is nuts. But she is right on when she said embrace and not try to change it. I have lived here my entire life and feel that outsiders have ruined vancouver. It used to be a nice city.
Reason 6 is absolutely true. Another reason not noted here is the Internet is awful. My husband works from home a lot, so this is not just an annoyance.
