As a fan of the Silent Hill series, I always observed how 1408 and Silent Hill were similar in nature. And no, i'm not just saying that because of SH4. They're both places in their worlds with strong psychological, supernatural, and mnemonic properties. therefor, knowing how Silent Hill is skilled in drawing people to it, I had assumed 1408 operated on the same principle. Fully aware they're not connected in actuality, but it's still food for thought. I hope to see more places like this in fiction. Purgatorio and Jigoku on Earth, and such.
One theory I have is that the postcard was either sent by Mike or another victim of 1408. Because 1408 can manipulate and distort time and realities, maybe someone who was trapped in 1408 seen the next victim (which would be Mike) and tried to warn them by sending a postcard not come come. Or maybe it was doppelganger Mike trapped in the room, trying to give a Mike in another reality warning not to come I didn't really flesh out this theory completely but it does sound possible and cool.
Heres my take. A fan would likely look up to Mike and not use reverse psychology in the risk that its not that direct to the point. More likely write a letter on what they know. A Hotel member would also probably not care that much for enticing Mike with ‘playing games’ where things are seen first hand/ in hearsay of other staff. Why would they care if he comes along they’ve enough to do and worry about. I believe it was Owen. The way he was was deterring Mike in the office, it’s the same way as the postcard, where the more he advises him not to do something the more enticed he is. He says don’t go into 1408 on postcard and then in the office. Also drinking, congratulating Mike and relaxing at the end when the place goes up has a purpose which i think is satisfaction of the result. (he certianly looked more relieved with whats going on). Don’t think the room knew about Mike before he arrived so i rule that out.
