This is the "secret sauce" that is missing in so many jazz instructional materials. This is why YOU ARE THE BEST, DAVE!
+Jeffrey Naness aw shux
Dave, your contribution to the jazz world is beyond measure. What you have given is so precious...the gift of understanding & a bridge to linking understanding with execution. Thank you so much!
that'll be $2 Bill. HAHAHAHAHA
Dave, you're the best jazz teacher ever. I have been into music and piano my whole life (I believe) at a high level. I have always envied jazz players and loved jazz music, but felt like I just didn't get it. I resigned myself to "I'm just not a jazz player". I always improvised (very freely) but it doesn't sound like jazz. Some things sounded "jazzy", but I could not in good conscious call myself a jazz musician. I sought out some great jazz piano players and studied with them. They must have understood some of the concepts you teach, because they were surely doing it themselves, but for some reason they really didn't share the secrets with me. In fact, one teacher accused me stealing his riffs. Yes, I was stealing his riffs. He didn't explain how he came up with them, so I tried to copy him to create the right sounds. I didn't know what else to do. I was demoralized. I'm 58 years old now. I found you on the internet about 5 years ago. You changed my life. I cannot and will not boast being a great jazz player, but I am no longer ashamed of myself. Some of what comes up in my improvs impresses me, I can't believe I am the one who just played that. Thank you!!
+Wayne Berman beautiful) I made the classes for you! If you'd like a free skype lesson sometime let me know)
Wayne, I've got a similar story. I could play the heck out of a blues, but whenever I set myself to playing jazz, it just never sounded like jazz to me. My ear was good enough to recognize that it wasn't right, but I couldn't figure out what was lacking. My ability to recognize my inadequacy was pretty demoralizing, but whenever I'd pay for lessons, the teachers I found didn't seem any more able to tell me where I was going wrong than I was. I finally found my way clear of the problem via another site (which I won't name here out of respect to what Dave is offering), but I recently discovered Dave's videos, and after watching some of his classes, it's clear that his lessons and masterclasses cover some of the same concepts in similarly approachable ways and that I'd have broken out of my rut via his lessons just as effectively. I've still got a lot of practicing and playing to do to become as proficient with my new understanding as I want to be, but it feels really good to finally be able to put together improvisations that sound they way I want to.
And don't give up on your dream of being a great jazz player - I'm a decade younger than you, but I've proven to myself that I can learn and improve pretty much as quickly as I did as a teenager when I put my mind to it. It's harder to find the time and dedication that I had back then, admittedly, but when I do, I make great strides very quickly, and that turns into its own motivation very quickly. It's just a matter of putting in the time and being rigorous about what I practice (and then playing with other people as much as I can), but the resulting gains are so apparent, it actually gets easier to put in the hours the more hours I put in.
I can certainly relate to being astounded that something I just played actually came from me. When that started happening to me it was such a joy after so many decades of feeling stuck.
Many thanks for your generousity in sharing your teaching expertise!
Im pretty much a beginner (about 3 years), but your videos are helping me so much. You have changed the way i practice, the way i play, the way i listen... Thank you so much for all these gems. you're the best!
I've been a classically trained violinist for 14 years and just started getting into jazz. The hardest thing for me was adding more flavor to my improvisations. Your videos are brilliantly clear and have given me much to add to the foundations of my improv skills. I will most definitely watch more of your videos.
Ok I will watch some of yours also)
Great teacher and player!
Great lessons from a fantastic teacher. Thank you, Dave!!! 🌴🌴
Hi Dave, Thanks so much for your great videos. I took some lessons with Charlie Banacos (and a few with you) many years ago in the Boston area but didnt have much time to practice because I had this thing called a “job”. I am mostly retired now and spending a lot more time practicing. Your videos are great for anyone wanting to learn about jazz piano. I think Charlie is looking down on all of us and smiling!

Thank you Dave for these four parts of the Beginning Jazz Improvisation series. Im the one who was frightened by Boris Karloff, only momentarily. I was glad you didn't keep it up for long. I had forgotten I had made a comment when I read your reply.
Gorgeous piece ("Indian Summer"). Congratulations!

Mannn, I just recently discovered chromatics is what helps out in improvisation dramatically, before I would just literally solo over a simple scale and wondered why I never sound professional in my soloing lol now I know.
+Dadee3 you got it daddy!
Dave, great stuff. I sort of do this, but your class reminded me of all the possibilities. I can do more with chromatics. Can't wait to get to the piano and try it. You should do a Barry Harris Master Class. I've met him (Detroit), I love him, he's a beautiful player...but I cannot understand his explanations of what he's doing.
+Alan Perlman Yes, Barry is on the top rung of jazz piano/teaching pantheon. A very underrated player in my opinion, too, one of the true greats.
YAY!!!! I like the approaching the 5th from below/ chromatic. I also like the creepy F#.
@ 13:24: Am I still awake? Super awake! Great stuff! Thank you for this much needed lesson ... 'bout time! ;)

Love your humour
Do I amuuuuuuuuuuuse you? haha
Thank you so much for this! I'm a high school student that was recommended this video to help with improv and it's helped a lot. Do you know any good podcasts I can use, though? I can't watch videos during school, but listening to podcasts would be possible.
I believe Peter Martin has daily podcasts, he is very good..thanks for writing)
@@DaveFrank Thanks for replying!
YEAH ! DAVE !
Brilliant, I think you are a legend :)
Also, I'd like to know your daily practice routine? Do you still play your major scales, contrary, 6th's, 10th scales etc etc?
It's not like you need to, but I'm curious to know if someone of your stature still does the basics :) :)
Thanks Davie
can you say this in ingles?
Hello Dave, beyond congratulating you as a teacher, I admire you as a musician !!, and wanted to know if you have the entire improvisation course subtitled, how many dollars would come out. I'll be in Ny. York in October, you'll be playing somewhere for that time, so I'll see you? Thank you.
ok, thanks for the English) I don't have the whole course subtitled, just the ones on my YT channel. If you would like to do some translations that would be fine haha..Feel free to write to me before you come to NYC)
You are the first person that I have heard to call that a button most people call it an enclosure.
thank you!
oh wao....Thank's Dave
hi from NYC, thanks for writing)
Wonderful Video, and such generosity for sharing your great knowledge. Thanks!!!. Question :What do i do when i get so excited playing this super tasty chromaticism and can´t stop doing it :) .
+Sergio Valenzuela If this lasts for more than 4 hours, contact your doctor immediately)
Ajajaja, i´m not sure my Obamacare covers will that illness. Cheers and Thanks!!.
21:34 - vibrato on the piano
Hi Dave, do you have any advice for how to make my piano playing sound more interesting? All your videos (the ones I have seen) have us play block chords in the left hand and a single line in the right, but when you are playing you are doing more interesting rhythmic things with the left hand, and more polyphonic things with your right. (I mean other than the walking bass--that is one technique, what else?) I understand stride ('cause I love Scott Joplin :) ), and walking bass, but not how to make the music just sound more rich and complex rhythmically and tonally. Please help! Thank you!
try this one and let me know: 15 Stylistic Elements for the Advanced Jazz Pianist ruclips.net/video/3CGOSToQWv0/видео.html
Thank you, Dave, that was really great. Exactly what I needed. Sometimes I need a kick in the pants to get me thinking in a new direction. :)
Very good...Dave...
You can to do the legend in portugês?
I cannot, can you? :)
@@DaveFrank I dont.know , Dave.
@@DaveFrank I would like, Very much! Dave...
@@pedromariano2100 Ok, write to me at dfrankjazz@aol.com and we can discuss)

THANK YOUUU!!!!!!!!!!!

What is your take on Barry Harris saying that you should not play chords in the left hand?
when did he say that?
THANKS!!!!
What do you recomend to see after this video to continue the learning about jazz improvisation?
www.davefrankjazz.com master class archive, 32 classes like this all free for you)
I appreciate you and the diligence it took to walk the path to get this to us. Do you teach private and if so where are you located? Thanks
I am in NYC, and teach 7 days/week here and worldwide on skype. How much do I owe you for the advertising haha? The first tune is on the CD Power of the Piano available at www.jazzheads.com
Your 5 top drills and a couple of 1 on 1's when I hit NY for the advertising lol. Thanks for the link on the tune. Might take you up on those skype lessons.
The most amazing part about this video--aside from the content--is the semi-ironic way in which Dave narrates. He probably read a "(LAUGH HERE)" note around 15:35, eh? HAHA.
daves the greatest lol
Send in the clones....just got it.
haha
