Dave Frank haha! Question... any videos in particular that can help me develop some improv ideas for Stella by starlight? The chord changes sometimes are a little different and therefore a little difficult to improvise over. Thanks!
Dave Frank cool. Do you have any lesson on bossa and blues? This will be the last question I ask, sorry :D I just think you're teaching is great and the info you give us aspiring pianists is invaluable

Dave, dave, Dave what a well planned and excellently delivered lesson. No exception to your other classes. I am currently watching this in the airport and I am itching to go home to practise, experiment and enjoy these concepts. I love the high level breakdown of jazz into simply music elements and concepts/principles. It was a light bulb moment when you said that as I saw how that two pronged framework apply in so many areas of life and art. I am saving myself for the second lesson - so excited. I feel like a small child at Christmas. Thank you for your generosity. This is the perfect resource for someone like me who is a resourceful self-learner with not enough money for lessons at the moment. It goes without saying that you are an excellent player. I thought I will never feel the jazz groove. I stopped playing piano for 7 years and came back to play in a rock band. This week I have an audition as a solo pianist in a lobby and had to catch up with jazz piano. But thanks a million to your lessons! I will surely visit and watch all your videos! Thank you so much Sir!
Dave, this is an incredible improv series! Thanks so much for creating this. You really know how to break this down! And your exercises make sense...I can see where they're gonna take me...
I'm going to do the exercises you've given. Also, I want to apply them to several Jamey Aebersold albums I have. I believe that using your techniques on these albums might reap me some rewards. What do you think?
What a great teacher you are Dave and, amazingly, I happen to be reading the book written by the guy (Paramhansa Yogandanda) featured in the picture next to the piano!!

Thank you! Coming from a world of accompaniment, soling has always been a weakness of mine. I think your class has opened my eyes a bit. The best thing is, I understood you clearly. Thank you!
I really like your thinking here. I'm classically trained so the way I relate to everything is just through the basic formal structures. Cool thing is when someone states the chords correctly and shows the transitions it makes much more sense. It seems to me that the one necessary feature of approaching jazz, especially improvisation, is an "automatic" recall of chromatic scales in every key. Thanks for what you have done here.

I have been playing music for over fifty years, studied intensely for seven years, but my main instrument has been guitar. I know a lot of harmonic theory, but some simple concepts you presented in this video will help me so much as I begin to delve into the world of jazz piano. I was recently given an $8000 Clavinola workstation, so it a perfect excuse to get back into an instrument I have devoted a few years to already, to deepen my knowledge of classical music and other genres. Thank you for your clear suggestions and friendly presentation.

I've been picking apart various jazz piano videos on youtube over the past year or two, yours included. If there's something I'm taking from your videos, it's how to have fun and relax, and just keep playing in the event of a mishap. Have to work out kinks in practice, but still a lesson worth learning. Your voice on the instrument is so (for lack of a better word) jolly haha. Thank you for teaching us!
I'm a music composition student out of Orlando, Florida and have been trying to utilze many online videos to learn jazz. I guess you could say, I started top heavy and now need to learn the bottom. I am practicing the method you gave for become more proficient in improv at faster speeds.
thanks dave , i live in indonesia, and it is really hard to me to find jazz piano teacher in the town where i live, and finnally i found this you tube channel , it is really help me a lot..awesome!!!

Dave Frank Hi Dave, Many minor 251,s go to the minor 7 chord .eg Am7b5-D7alt-Gm7 So as the harmonic minor has a natural7 rather than a sharp7 doesn't this clash ?
david freedman the resolution to the m7 is basically for girly-men) Most minor 2-5's should resolve in a more manly fashion to a min6 regardless of the the real girly man book says. haha
Thanks for the link (got a kick out of the Liberace class). As someone not formally trained (self learner) could you help me understand the D7 of the 2 5 1 progression in G minor mentioned at 24:34? Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but when I play diatonic chords in G minor, I get a D minor 7 on the 5 chord (which sounds awful) instead of a dominant 7. Is it assumed that this chord is from the harmonic minor instead of the natural minor? Thanks!
Thanks again, you truly are a great human being, just by sharing the gift of music, and your knowledge that is very admirable, there are people out there that charge for instruction and they can’t touch you or get close to the genuine and the dynamic way you teach, seriously, you are the teacher that had make the most impact on me, your way of teaching is superb and and inspirational to me. I am self thought and I reach a stage where I felt like I hit a plateau, but thanks to you my brother I am looking forward to get to the next dimension in my musical experimentation adventure. I am pumped up! By the way I never expected a reply from you, that says a lot about your love for music! Thanks again brother!

thank you very much for this. I will be certainly putting this into practice. I know some stuff theoretically but my challenge has always been the practical application of the theory.
Dave! I took this sh*t in school and i didn't understand it at all until now. My prof gave no live examples - taught from a book we were expected to study and understand based purely from literature and recordings. it was a theory course (which should expand your knowledge) and i left feeling frustrated and more confused than when i entered. honestly your simple easy explanation cleared up so many questions i've had for years since studying jazz! thank u for the elucidation!
Mr. Frank! Thank you SO much for your exceptionally well written, played, and taught lesson! I have just started to "get" modes a bit, but your part 1 lets me see it from a logical and wise way to improvise. Next time I'm in NY I hope to see you play! Thanks a million! Craig

Hi Dave, just want to say thanks for the great content you continuously bestow on the world. Its top notch. Someday I'd like to come see you give a class in the big bad city. Do you have an future classes scheduled. I like hearing you play!
Dave : Excellent . What I noticed is that after the " initial cord mapping," in many songs, there's a, shall i call it, a " second order " layer of cord mapping when you look at the scale improv overlay. For example, in the song "Take the A Train", it would simple be ! / IV / V / I i.e.. C / F / G/ C. This is a nice additional distillation. primecortex

Greetings from Rome! Finally, a great teacher who doesn’t focus on modes and all that stuff. However, there are two things on which I have a slightly different perspective, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on them… In my opinion: 1. The so-called Lydian dominant mode is nothing more than the melodic minor mode starting from the IV: why should I even bother learning it if I already know the melodic minor mode? Wouldn’t it be as (barely) useful as learning the Lydian mode if I already know the major scale? Wouldn’t it be better to maintain a consistent approach and stick to using only the tonal modes, that is, the major and minor scales (whether harmonic or melodic)? 2. In Dm7b5, when we are still building up the tension that will follow (“preparazione” of “tensione”), the natural minor mode of C sounds much smoother because it allows us to connect Ab and C with Bb, which is a major second away from both notes, avoiding augmented seconds (as would occur in the harmonic minor mode between Ab and B). Thanks!

Thanks so much Dave, I’m starting jazz guitar studies at the University of Manitoba this fall and these videos really helped! My knowledge on jazz improv was very limited but watching these gave me a fresh start

Thank you very much for the class! I have been spending a long time trying to learn Jazz piano(I'm classical piano background), I even took Jazz pedagogy and Jazz Harmony class in college, but I didn't understand and couldn't really play Jazz music on piano until tonight I found this video! Your class is very clear and understandable! I am sooooo happy right now! I'll definitely continue watching your video and learning from you, thanks agin Mr. Frank!

Nice video! I like the idea of teaching key centers rather than individual modes on each chord which can be confusing to many beginners.
Why does this only have 2.5k likes? This a generous, fantastic, helpful, well paced and motivating lesson. Thanks Dave! 🎹👍
Dave, this is an incredible improv series! Thanks so much for creating this. You really know how to break this down! And your exercises make sense...I can see where they're gonna take me...
Yeah Bill, you can make HUNDREDS of dollars using these esoteric jazz techniques) Anything I can do to help you feel free to write..
I'm going to do the exercises you've given. Also, I want to apply them to several Jamey Aebersold albums I have. I believe that using your techniques on these albums might reap me some rewards. What do you think?
Bill Phillips once you feel comfortable improvising on a tune, then you can add some backing tracks at a comfortable tempo it have fun with it..
What a great teacher you are Dave and, amazingly, I happen to be reading the book written by the guy (Paramhansa Yogandanda) featured in the picture next to the piano!!

Broke down a number of tough to explain ideas. Thanks Dave

This was truly an eye opener!! greetings from Ghana.

Thank you for teaching us!
ok nice to meet you where are located?
I'm a music composition student out of Orlando, Florida and have been trying to utilze many online videos to learn jazz. I guess you could say, I started top heavy and now need to learn the bottom. I am practicing the method you gave for become more proficient in improv at faster speeds.
Thanks so much Dave you've really clarified things. I can see a way forward and a correct line for future practise and study. Brilliant!
What a wonderful lesson Dave! This is amazing, thank you so much for bringing jazz to the masses!
thank you for writing) I thought you said "thank you for bringing jazz to the asses" for a second haha

Dave Frank Hi Dave,
Many minor 251,s go to the minor 7 chord .eg Am7b5-D7alt-Gm7
So as the harmonic minor has a natural7 rather than a sharp7 doesn't this clash ?
david freedman the resolution to the m7 is basically for girly-men) Most minor 2-5's should resolve in a more manly fashion to a min6 regardless of the the real girly man book says. haha
Dave Frank I would hate to be thought of as a girly player.
So ill convert every minor 7th to a minor 6th from now on. Thanks Dave
david freedman when you want to get a nice softer sound m7 is fine:)
I cant stop smiling, that was great Dave. Thanks so much
check out pt 2 Rich and you'll be blowin' man)

Thanks for the link (got a kick out of the Liberace class). As someone not formally trained (self learner) could you help me understand the D7 of the 2 5 1 progression in G minor mentioned at 24:34? Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but when I play diatonic chords in G minor, I get a D minor 7 on the 5 chord (which sounds awful) instead of a dominant 7. Is it assumed that this chord is from the harmonic minor instead of the natural minor? Thanks!
Disregard my last post. I figured it out
that'll cost you $2
Thanks again, you truly are a great human being, just by sharing the gift of music, and your knowledge that is very admirable, there are people out there that charge for instruction and they can’t touch you or get close to the genuine and the dynamic way you teach, seriously, you are the teacher that had make the most impact on me, your way of teaching is superb and and inspirational to me.

I know some stuff theoretically but my challenge has always been the practical application of the theory.
great Neil. Try out parts 2-4 when you get a chance for a total curriculum)

Greetings from Rome!
Finally, a great teacher who doesn’t focus on modes and all that stuff.
However, there are two things on which I have a slightly different perspective, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on them…
In my opinion:
Thanks!
