A little bit of history of the birch clock tower. There are to sides of story. JWW Birch is the 1st british resident of Perak. An arrogant resident which uprised the anger of the malays, then.
To the british its represent the so called their hero who died in the line of duty.
While to the malays it's a reminder of our hero, dato maharajalela who fight for the freedom of our land especially perak. The clock stands there abt 100 yrs ago.
Enjoy the visits n makan2 there.

    1) Laksa - mana : in English ---> "where is Laksa?" (Laksa is a type of food)
    2) Laksamana : in English means "Admiral"

Kaya is a coconut egg curd ( similar to lemon curd) kaya either come in light dark brown made with palm sugar or the green Pandan leaf.. should try the Pandan kaya next time.. really good.. but need extra butter on the toast.. the half boiled egg is served in a cup as its easier to dip the toast with a little soya sauce added and white pepper..

if you are settling down in Ipoh, other than learning Malay, you have to learn to speak Cantonese. Most Chinese in Ipoh are not fluent in English or Malay. they feel more comfortable when you communicate with them in Cantonese. Even the young ones have trouble speaking in English or Malay because most of them study in Chinese medium schools. My experience after settling in Ipoh for more than 30 years.

Masjid Negeri means state mosque. whereeas Masjid Negara means national country mosque. so in the malaysian flag has a 13 pointed star along with a crescent moon. the 13 pointed star denotes the 13 states in malaysia. the cresent moon denotes as islam as the main national religion for the majority malay people of the country. negeri means state and negara means country. hope this info helps.

most of the old shop houses in Ipoh dates back to the mid 19th century at the height of the Tin mining boom.. concubine lane is amongst the oldest.. probably goes back to the early 19th century.. masjid negeri Perak was inaugurate in 1978.. negeri means ''state'' and ''Negara'' means national.... the one in KL ''Masjid Negara'' is the Nation mosque of Malaysia.. Masjid negeri Perak is the state Mosque for the state of Perak..

One theory is that the street became known as Concubine Lane because this was the place where rich local business man Yao Tet Shin gave his mistress a house to live in. There is also 'Wife Street' in Ipoh which, so the story goes, is so called because this is where Yau Tet Shin gave his first wife a house to live in.
