Exactly my thoughts. I would make the central center back defend balls into the box. When the ball goes to an attacking winger, one center back tracks him while the other center back defends the back post. The full backs track the runners into the box. The CDM anticipates the crosses into the penalty spot and the second balls from the defense. When the Full backs reach the defensive box, the shape becomes 5-1-3-1. with the striker staying high.
The formation with 4 at the back is not the problem. The problem is the tactics of vacating the midfield and hoofing the ball up from Onana or the CBs or Casemiro up to 5-6 players standing and chilling on the shoulder of the opposition defence. That is diabolical. All we need to do is to drop back players including the wingers into the midfield, make short passes and push up together as a team. And to achieve that, we need to play the players that are technicians and competent on the ball and can keep things ticking. Bruno and Rashford definitely don’t play. Casemiro probably drops out as well. If we simply play Ugarte, Mainoo, Mount, Amad, Zirkzee, Antony, maintain the right distances, close spaces and drop back and push forward by moving the ball as a team, we will be infinitely better.

Though the only thing I have with the 3-4-1-2 is it makes wingers redundant (in the way we should use it I.e. the fullbacks being the two who operate on the wings). So it begs the question of what to do with Amad, Garnacho, Antony and Rashford? Now Antony I would say is fine. Because we have seen Ten Hag drop him in as RB [Icl, Antony should be repositioned as a RB as his defensive work is actually decent. Attack is his problem]. I don't see Garnacho, Rashford or Amad doing that fullback full stretch role. 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 is fantastic for coverage in the channels. its also great for cutting off counters on the flanks as you have natural 3 man presses you can trigger on either flank with ease. What it needs however, is one CM with fantastic metronomic passing, because the power of switches to the flanks in this setup is nuts because you can trigger 2 v1 or 3v1 or 3v2 situations in 2 passes from the counter on turnover situations in central midfield.
That's a very good team the only two changes that I would make is Amad for rashford and Martinez central centre back because we all know that Martinez can't defend wide areas

I think our game plan and players lacks patience to build, they are always trying to take the ball forward without considering it's risks, we need our midfielders who can keep the ball at their feet.
This is probably what Tuchel would play if we got him. Only thing I'd change as I said in the video previous would be interchanging Bruno with Case next to Ugarte. That way he can't run out of position aggressively like he does in the 10. We also utilise his best asset which is his stamina and he doesn't ruin things near the goal. He's forced to be more safe with his passing in the middle of the park too.

On paper our team is not shit. EtH tactics don't suit our players. Even Mount can come in at 10. This formation gives us depth all over the park. Def- Lindelof, shaw, maguire as depth. Attack - Garnacho, diallo, rash and antony as depth Cm - Eriksen, mount and mainoo as depth.
3-5-2 can also work in a possession based team...but the down side of 3 at the back is if the wing backs get "pinned down" or "switch of play" so possession is key...😅not a tactico

I would play Eriksen as the deep lying playmaker, similar to how Inter utilizes Hakan Calhanoglu, with Bruno as the box to box like Barella and Mainoo at the 10 behind the split strikers like Mkhitaryan. Idk, but Ugarte has to play so one can only dream.
Thing with De ligt is he isn’t a high line defender naturally , vs Liverpool he was always wanting to drop and he was often 3 yards deepest man, it’s one of the reason Diaz was given room to drop behind Martinez and then pop pack out. Just something to keep an eye on with de ligt hee a very good player but high line specialist I don’t think so (also don’t need a ridiculous high line if you press efficiently something ETH doesn’t do)
If we are playing 3 at the back then Martinez has to cycle with De Ligt. You can’t play them at the same time. Maza at LB and Dalot at RB. It won’t happen tho cuz we just lost midfield depth.

Dalot cant start. I dont know what issue ppl have , but Dalot is an awful footballer and is a problem to our attack and defence regardless of the side he starts. As for the formation. The real issue here is the fact our players *are not coordinated* . 3 years in, and this fraud has not yet taught them how to attack and defend as a team. Our midfielders move on their own and not as part of a unit. Our "wingers" try to score more than they try to look at the pitch and find who the free man in the box is. I can write a book about why we are so bad tactically. Everyone knows they can bait us to try to counter and then find holes in our mid. *Counterattacking football does not work* !! I also dont rate Diallo or Hojlund. Diallo is a cup player at best and Hojlund is a bum that somehow found himself playing football for us when he should be fixing cars in some car shop in Denmark.
