He said this is a "general overview". This chart will work for 80% of homes. 15% would be on the fence to choose the next up or down size. 5% would be special situations. So this is great for confirming what you need to size to replace what you already have. Sounds like some contractors that are commenting like to run up the bill.

I always go in one size bigger so you’re not overworking the system . My daughter put the one recommended on that heat the house above 62° in extreme cold.

Exactly wrong overdizing esp bad in hot humid conditions won’t remove enough humidity. Let alone higher initial costs and less efficiency heat pumps are optimally running all the time not stopping two often

@@johnwhite2576 I think the contractor put the wrong size in my house because it never cooled the house . and my neighbors on both sides of me had the same issue and they want to the next size bigger too.

This chart and advice is completely wrong. Have a proper heat load calculation and ductwork evaluation completed before having any equipment installed.

You cannot size hvac equipment by "charts". It has to be done like previously mentioned in the comments below by using manual J to find the load, manual S to select the equipment and also a manual D to ensure the ductwork is sized correctly as well. By "being around a long time" you guys should know that taking shortcuts is doing a disservice to the customer! HVac is not something that should be taken up by a DIY, especially during the design and sizing phase or you may wind up spending all those dollars that you saved replacing incorrectly sized equipment and/or possibly repairing mold/moisture related issues caused by oversized equipment. Hire a competent contractor that does proper load calculations and get the job done right. In the end you will have a system that saves you money on your electric bill and that also provides excellent comfort for the occupants of the home 365 days a year.

That’s not how you size furnaces or air conditioners

Even if you're doing a quick load calc., You're still wrong. The only true way to size a home is a Manual J.STOP BEING LAZY!

Yes you would add in you're basement sq. If you'll be putting a supply and return in the basement space

@@KhaimDaTrucker What if you don't use the basement that much and you usually close the supply and return in the basement?
