How do I know what position my baby is inside of me, and where will I feel movement?

  • You wanted to know how you can tell what position your baby is inside of you. And ultimately, you can only tell this for sure by having an ultrasound done. An ultrasonographer or a trained doctor can look and see what position the baby is actually in. The position we want them to be in is the vertex position, and that is where the baby is head down in your pelvis. Now, a baby can also be breech, or head up with feet down, foot down, or bum down.
    So another question you had was where would you feel movement based on the baby's position? And if you imagine the baby being head down, they're in the fetal position, if they're laying in your belly like this, then you're likely to feel lots of kicks and punches on the side the baby isn't sitting in, because the side that they are sitting on will have the head down low, and the backbone, and the bum on top. And you'll also feel some shifts and movements in the bottom of your belly. If your baby is in the breech position, the movement may feel a little bit different, because the baby's arms and legs are up top.
    So around 28 weeks, 25% of babies are breech. At 32 weeks, only 7-14% are breech. And by full-term (or 37 weeks), only 3% are breech, meaning 97% of babies have figured out that they need to be head down. So it's not cost-effective to ultrasound everyone and see what position the baby is in. In the latter end of the 3rd trimester, your doctor will look for position when they're checking you at your appointments, and they can do this a few different ways. One is called Leopold's maneuver, where they feel the woman's belly, and they try to feel for the head, and the backbone, and the bum, and get a sense for how the baby is oriented. When we check your cervix, we can also feel for a head (if you're dilated at all) and get a sense for what position the baby is in. If there's any questions about it, then of course the doctor will ultrasound to determine if the baby is indeed breech or not.
    Now, a lot of women also want to know, if my baby is head down at the end, are they likely to stay? And it depends on what baby this is for you. If it's your first, then it's likely. But if you've had babies before, the uterus is more stretchy, and of course, that's defining the space your baby can move around in. So if it's a little more stretchy, the baby will have more ability to move around and flip. So a baby could possibly be vertex at 37 weeks, breech at 38 weeks, vertex again at 39 weeks - I've seen that a lot in practice over the years as a Labor & Delivery nurse. There are many other factors that go into the position a baby will be in. The umbilical cord, the placenta location, and also the shape of the woman's uterus will determine how they're lying. A baby can actually also be side-lying. That's called transverse position.
    Now, if your baby is breech at the end of pregnancy, what can be done about that? There's a lot of different things out there that you might read about that you can try in order to see if your baby will flip spontaneously, but there's not really any science behind that. I've heard putting a bag of cold peas on your belly to scare the baby into the head down position, but you have to remember, there's a lot of layers between your skin and the baby, so they're not really feeling that. Some people have talked about acupuncture or standing on their heads. I definitely don't recommend standing on your head, because that's a hazard for anyone who's not pregnant, but especially when you're pregnant and your center of gravity has shifted.
    Talk with your doctor about it, and if they've determined that your baby is in the breech position, they'll talk to you about the plan for delivery. In some cases, the doctor determines that an external cephalic version (or ECV) might be appropriate for the woman, as long as the placenta is in a good location, the umbilical cord is not around the baby's neck, there's enough fluid surround the baby. They might say, "Let's try to rotate the baby." So we bring you into the hospital setting, goo up your belly, and from the outside, the doctor tries to manipulate the baby into the head down position. So if your doctor talks to you about that, then you can ask them more specific questions and decide if it's something that you would like to try.
    In the end, if your baby is still breech when it's time for delivery, then your doctor will recommend a C-section, because complications can arise by delivering a baby vaginally that is breech. If you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at / intermountainmoms , and recommend us to your friends and family too.

    WOW! This is so helpful and informative. I am 25 weeks pregnant with my first child and my baby kicks me quite a bit towards the pelvis. I am due for my next sonography appointment on 29th of February, 2020 and I am hoping for the best. At the age of 39 to be pregnant with the first baby is quite exciting as much as makes me nervous too. Please do keep me in your prayers and your thoughts for a healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery. Thanks!

    I’m 28 weeks and my doctor just checked by feeling my belly (super uncomfortable) and said she was head down. I’ve felt most movement lower in my belly. A few times higher up. I definitely feel her head down there Pushing on my bladder. It’s a different feeling from being kicked in the bladder. A lot more pressure and lasts longer than that quick punch to it.

    Please visit Spinning Babies for more information (with research behind it) before you resign yourself to a C-section. "Standing on your head" is not the recommended position, but forward leaning inversion has solid research behind it. Just because it doesn't involve a hospital doesn't mean it's ineffective.

      The different positions seems to be how a lot of babies who are breech once labor begins actually flip to the correct position by the time the mother pushes. This lady gives a lot of biased advice, she seems to know only of what the hospital accountants want the patients to know, I hate medical professionals like that, like did you not go into medicine to help people? Stop kissing up to thieves.

      Sometimes baby is breech for a reason doctors can't see until afterwards. I tried spinning babies, I was doing handstands in the swimming pool, even wormwood on my big toe. I did everything except version technique. Had a c section, there was a fibroid preventing my baby from turning. It is sometimes unavoidable so yes, try everything you can but don't beat yourself up because not everything is in our control ❤

      @@Moonlightlove31 Agreed. The problem is the belief that you cannot have a breech vaginal delivery. The mandatory c-section policy is to try and avoid having their butts sued. I know, I've asked them.

    I was head down up until about two weeks before my due date, then I breached myself in one night and put my poor mother through hell. She went to the doctor the next day who told my mom if he hadn't seen her last week he never would've believed I did what I did (I was also her first child). Needless to say they scheduled the c-section for my due date and, well, here I am =D

    If I were pregnant, I would give birth to a breech baby vaginally and try to get the baby rotated if it is transverse and if that doesn't work and the baby is still transverse during labor, I would get a C section. But C section for breech when vaginal birth in the hands and knees position can work just as well(In fact I have heard this recommended for breech babies instead of the prone position to avoid a c section(that is laying down like you usually do in a hospital bed is not recommended if the baby is breech))

    My baby moves around a lot since 32 weeks. I'm almost 37. She tends to shift around some nights and it's really painful. She switches from transverse to up or down, and the other day my OB was pretty sure she is breech. Waiting on an ultrasound, but soonest available is over 2 weeks away and I'm afraid she'll be born before then.

    • @bric9244
      @bric9244 Год назад +1

      @@tahneewalshamofficial At the advice of my Midwife, I paid out of pocket to get an ultrasound sooner. It revealed my baby was transverse breech (butt down, head & feet up). I did some inverted positions to get her to flip and also saw a chiropractor. We ultimately got her head down, but found out after delivery that her umbilical cord was only 9 inches long. It presented some difficulties for the delivery and is likely why she had such a hard time flipping on her own. All of the painful movement I felt at night was likely her attempting to flip, but not successfully 🙃

      How powerful are the movements up top? I've actually felt movement simultaneously at the top right and bottom left, my baby was definitely head down my not in my pelvis, the much stronger movement I have was in the top right. When baby kicks her feet sometimes its so powerful it actually moves things off of me, you can easily see the movement even with me wearing layers, the bottom movement is only something I can feel and not one else can see or feel it.

    According to ACOG, 37 weeks is NOT FULL term. it's EARLY term... this should be something you should know...

    • @jenniferkrogman4873
      @jenniferkrogman4873 7 лет назад +3

      Early term: 37 0/7 weeks through 38 6/7 weeks
      Full term: 39 0/7 weeks through 40 6/7 weeks
      Late term: 41 0/7 weeks through 41 6/7 weeks
      Postterm: 42 0/7 weeks and beyond
      Data from Spong CY. Defining "term" pregnancy: recommendations from the Defining "Term" Pregnancy Workgroup. JAMA 2013;309:2445-6.
      For all you who cannot acknowledge that this was changed in 2013!! Research for yourself. 37 weeks is NO LONGER FULL TERM. It's EARLY TERM. Babies may do ok but they are still developing. Just b/c your OB says so doesn't mean it's evidence based. Use your brains and look I to things on your own too. You'd be surprised how they refuse to use current research and putting mom and babies at risk by using old dated practices.

    • @melodramatic7904
      @melodramatic7904 6 лет назад +12

      Jennifer krogman while you are not wrong, you are also taking that information a bit too literally.
      Early term, full term, late term...it's still at term.
      The point if the distinctions is more for the doctors than for the moms. Doctors realized that it is not good to schedule c-section or inductions before 39 weeks becsuse the baby may still be developing. HOWEVER, they will not stop spontaneous labor that occurs between 37 and 38+6 weeks. That is because this is still FULL TERM or AT TERM.
      For example. I went into labor spontaneously with nt second at 38 weeks and my baby was perfectly healthy. Whereas my roomate when i had my first, she was induced at 40+3 weeks and her baby couldn't breath on his own when he was born.
      So as you can see, these terms don't really give the whole picture. Honestly there is no way for doctors to know whether your baby is ready or not until they are actually born.
      Basically, for the layman or the expectant mom, it is much easier to say 37 weeks is full term rather than go into this whole thing about early term etc etc. She gave the simple explanation. That is all. Now if this was a video about whether to schedule a c section at 37 weeks and she said the same thing, THAT would be a whole different story.

    • @noth9617

      melodramatic7904 by that logic "pre term" is also "term". A baby born at 27 weeks is preterm. Are you saying that's the same as 37 or 40?

      Hiccups don't come from the mouth like we do, they hiccup from the stomach. Remember, they aren't breathing in air from your nasal & mouth area so was less likely to be hiccups in your pelvis.
