Due to a misunderstanding on my part about how
microscope objectives work, a mistake was made in this video.
The images we're hoping to produce with our new
objective will be 400x magnification and not the 40x we discussed. Since this is part of our Patreon goal, we wanted to be as clear as possible about this so you know where your money is going. We're also working on new video review protocols to avoid mistakes like this in the future.

It is surprising, the amount of views some videos get, which is low compared to what this channel has achieved before, a whopping 1.5 million views on the Stentor video.
Every video this channel has produced has been a thirst quencher for curiosity.

Let me tell you a fascinating occurrence in the macrocosmos!
Have you seen the RUclips documentary ‘fungus: the third kingdom’? Please do watch it, I am sure you will be amazed of how little we know about life!
My theory is that the fungus kingdom plays a big role in eukaryotes evolution. Google fungus mutualism in combination with: ants, termites, honey bees, beetles. You will find something extraordinary! All those insects (not all species ex. beetles) are actually very beneficial for Mother Nature AKA ‘Nature’s little helper’ and started to behave eusocial!
And google parasitic fungus insects. Fungus can be very frightening when made into an enemy.. However they seem to not do this randomly but are specific with which insect species they will infect. If you research the insect species you will discover that those species are actually causing harm towards Mother Nature! Eating other ‘Nature little helpers’ (Colobopsis leonardi) uncontrollably growth in population (ex. Cicada) or it likes to eat to much fungus (snails).
I view the Fungus kingdom as the protectors of Mother Nature. They are extraordinarily intelligent.

@@charlesbrightman4237 Curious, how do you define consciousness?

    • @frankzaffuto3670
      @frankzaffuto3670 3 года назад +6

@@charlesbrightman4237 indeed, because if you define it by apparent awareness of and interactions with one's surroundings, it can easily be rewritten as 'reactions to environmental stimuli,' which only require sensing machinery, motive machinery and an interface between the two. Purely reactionary, no thoughts needed. Input a 3D location, bearing and vector for a stimulus and a probability distrubution of its nature and as a result its coefficient of interest to the entity is generated along with a reactionary algorithm to enable the entity to deal with the object.

This thread points out the many levels of consciousness. Microbes, as far as I can tell do not abstract. They are closer to machines with hardwired programming (instinct). As one examines animals up the more complex neurological connections, this issue becomes truly fascinating.
Humans' instinct is to learn. This subject of learning is extremely complex and stages are time sensitive. But the human condition exists precisely because there are few hardwired programming instances outside of reflexes. So every religion (a philosophy) and every formal philosophy requires a code of behaviors Humans have to learn.
Think along these lines. It has given me a lifetime of study and part of why I am a psychiatrist.

@@deathsheadknight2137 as a native English speaker that now lives in a Spanish speaking country, I can totally understand why. When you read it takes accent completely out of the equation which helps a lot as it makes it so you can’t mishear a word or phrase and misunderstand it. It also can give you extra time to digest the words and allows you to re-read things if needed (in this case by pausing the video). Before I was more or less conversationally fluent, I could easily have a WhatsApp conversation for example but couldn’t do the same by voice. It’s much easier to confuse similar sounding words when hearing them vs reading them where it’s 100% clear which word it is.

Everything about this show is a wonderful dream I'd love some longer episodes like the one where an egg was infected with perisites, where it's mostly music, some narration, and long, uninterupted footage

It's a faux pas to name organisms after yourself. Of course if James discovered it but someone else formally described it, it would be totally normal for that person to name it after James. It sounds like James wants to describe it himself though.

I am so glad people are interested in studying the world around us. Doing so is the first step of doing science.
    Observation
    Gathering data
    Finding patterns
    Testing those patterns
Comparing your results to others who have done the same or similar research and seeing similarities and differences
Determining logical consequences of research and testing if these consequences are true.
Having rigorous evaluation of your research to assure it is suitable for publishing and showing the public authentic research.

So glad they made this channel, my soul was begging for it before hand and I remember the excitement I felt when I saw the first video. I can never get bored of quality footage from the world beneath our noses and the vibe was an instant ace, Andrew was an excellent choice.
I wish they made another one for stargazing too. But that'd be very costly for higher quality, the lacking in dynamic motion may be cause for struggle too, but if anyone could make that work, I'd put my money on Hank.

I think of getting a patreon using the traveler's kit but I have some questions about what I pay for:
    1) I'm a highschool-teacher for biology and will use it for lessons, would embed some vids as background in a title-PowerPoint which is shown before the lesson starts and propably many more thing, which will come to my mind.
1a) Do I get a patreon-bill, to add it to my annual tax declaration?
1b) Which VAT is used? The american one or the one of my country (Germany)?
1c) What are the conditions of quitting the patreon?
1d) Can I pay the annual amount at once? 8$x12month?
    2) there is a "weekly hi-resolution image of one of our micro friends".
    2a) What exactly means "hi-res"? HD? 4k? 48 MP?
2b) What exactly means "image"? JPG? RAW? PNG? TIFF? I think of creating some teaching aids, work-sheets, maybe a small set of memory-cards or index-cards to learn some very basic species of fresh-water-microbs in class 9 and that means I have to work with the images using Photoshop or illustrator. I bought the coulering-book you offer, but it's not working for my intended usage and the pdf doesn't contain vector-graphics so I have to make it on my own :/
2c) Do I get access to all the pictures beeing published to the patreons before I joined in? Maybe in a kind of picture-library where I can search for specific key-words and/or species?
2d) Am I allowed to use your pictures and videos for that? What about the question of copyright and that stuff?
    3) I get access to "an extended video [...]".
    3a) Which resolution?
3b) Which format is it? Cause webm can't be put into powerpoint :/
    4) What is the "Patrons Discord"?

I was fortunate enough to have a brief conversation with James on Instagram before I started fanboying too hard. I was very humbled to have talked with him, mostly about locations of his specimens on trees.
I also wanted to mention if any mimiviruses or pandoraviruses could possibly be on any future episodes? By virus standards they are huge and of a similar size to small archaea, so if you can image archaea then you should be able to image these giant viruses. Getting your hands on any is a different matter entirely haha.
The final thing I wanted to mention is how does one film single celled organisms who are only active in darkness?

I’m always flabbergasted by the images you show us. They look so great on my iPad! Seeing these organisms go about and watching their insides move around I always wonder: how does this organism work? How does the Lacrymaria extend and bend its neck, know when to open its mouth and when to go in ‘hybernation?’ What sensors do these creatures have? I’d like to know more about that.

This channel has made me so curious about the microbes that live in my fish tank. I was so careful when setting it up to make sure that the nitrogen cycle established properly, and I got some dirty filter media from my local fish store to help that along, but I wonder what else lives in there besides nitrifying bacteria and the critters I can see (a betta, a bamboo shrimp, detritus worms, algae, and some pesky snails).
