When I take a novice rock crawling, I challenge them to drive up a ramp until they feel like they are about to roll. Usually they stop when they lift a tire. I then inch them further until they are convinced it’s going over and resist. A this point I lift that tire and rock their vehicle with my body weight. After they feel how truly stable they are, even at full starfish grabbing the seat lean, they become much more comfortable wheeling off camber and can take more challenging lines.

Rory, don't say sorry for putting your job, your safety and customers safety before filming. It was a "short" recovery YT-wise, but it took you hours. And I think it's important to "see" the not so "sunny" side of recovery business. Thank you for sharing.
That second recovery at night helps remind us all that you are recovery guys first and youtubers second. Not much to show, but doing your best and keeping it real
Just saw the part of the video of you getting the hunters chained up and on the way out. Saw you roll your shoulders and neck. Working long hours, bitter cold, throwing 2 sets of iron.... hey brother, I know exactly how you feel. That pain and tightness right between your shoulder blades up through your neck, looking forward to along hot shower and a shot of your favorite single malt.... only to sleep in your truck! You are definitely an old school warrior. Nothing fake or soy boy bout you. Made me smile remembering all the times I've had to do the same. On behalf of all those you have recovered, THANK YOU!
Rory getting in and just driving this top heavy yota right out of prerel is so freaking awesome! 👍 Always blows my mind! He's definitely one of the best drivers on the planet 👏
It seems there is no limit to the ends Rory will go to in order to make the recovery happen. And no limit to the hights Mike will attain to bring us the best camera angles and stunning silhouette scenes.
Great job on the recoveries, guys!! You guys get to see some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Really enjoy being taken along so we can enjoy the views too!! Winter recoveries are always fun to look at.... as long as I'm inside where it nice and warm! LOL!!
I say this as respectfully as I can. Trailmater (the truck) does things that most people would think are impossible and it does them with grace. Like no way he's getting that out without using 3 winches and 6 snatch blocks... Then he (rory) gets the truck out of the hole with just a traction board. Blows my mind! Great job trailmater and crew!
I lived in Arizona for years and I love it there. I moved to Texas because of all the Californians moving in and making it New California. Now they're moving here in droves. Pretty sure all the trails around here will be getting closed down just like back home.
People in the United States have every right to move to wherever they choose. Trails are still open here in Arizona. Blaming California for things is the laziest internet take ever.
@johnchedsey1306 all the trails that I used to drive my truck on are closed to motorized vehicles. I lived just outside of Tucson in Picture Rocks. All the trails are closed except to foot traffic and there are very few of those open anymore. Don't presume to tell me what I know.
You are absolutely correct about Highway 13 between Rifle and Meeker! I once watched a bull elk get hit by a semi truck. It killed the elk and severely damaged the front end of the semi truck. I couldn't understand why the truck was so damaged, until I got close and saw the elk. It was massive, in the dark it looked like a camel in size! Definitely a crazy road and a crazy place full of beauty and awe.
Mike, your mnemonic device for remembering red versus white oaks makes sense. I’ll now remember the difference! Another bit of mnemonics: my 5th & 6th grade math teacher taught us improper fractions by calling them Dolly Partons- bigger on top than the bottom!
I appreciated Rory's comments at the end about the 4Runner guy afraid he would roll on his side. Rory quipped in a jesting but not in a derisory way that the guy still had 5-degrees more before executing a barrel roll. Seat time is the only way you can learn these things. Kudos to the client who recognized that his roof-top tent was not helping him in this situation. Need to keep the center of gravity (balance point or centroid) low and as centered as possible for normal off-road vehicles. (Trailmater's centroid is a bit 'forward' and for good reasons)
I'm of the opinion that if you're worried about rolling and want to call for help, call for help. Always better to have recovery experts come in and make sure there's a good ending to the story.
Each time I watch these videos I have more respect for what you do and also for the camera work, I am sitting here in 36C watching you mucking around in snow, Thank you for anything that you film ❤❤❤
Thanks for another fine video. The explanation about traction boards at the end was nice. That last recovery in the snow also shows the values of working lockers.
Thanks for sharing the not so glorious recovery, keeping it real. Kind of like the comment "Once you've rolled a few", someone who hasn't does not have that level of experience and is better of letting you do a easy recovery than getting themselves in big trouble.
Great video Mater saw his shadow 4.5 months of winter take that all of you ground hogs. The banter between Shawn and Mike regarding Mikes working was worth the chuckles. Thanks team Trail Mater.
Now this was an awesome video with gorgeous scenery along with the snow and muck to get this mountain recovery done. Flipping the Jeep back up on its wheels was a good shot too!
Rory, you are so much better at recoveries than matt's kids, they should come and spend a month at your recoveries, and then graduate to your abilities, you and Mike and Shawn are my most watched channel, alway informative and some funnies at the end, love this channel
The bouncy shadow of Trail Mater on the canyon wall really shows how rough even the smooth part of the trail is 🙂 when we drove the road from Rifle to meeker a few years ago in April we saw dozens and dozens and dozens of deer/elk carcasses on the roadside... sooo sad.... Thanks for sharing 🙂
The moving shadow of Trailmater on the canyon wall near the beginning of this video is very artistic and it reminds me of several years ago I photographed the shadow of myself on the west side of a tall tcornfiel as the sun was setting as I slowly rode my motorcycle home one day with my right hand on the throttle grip and my left hand holding my camera.
You guys just keep making vids, they are very entertaining, and Mike always adds a bunch of interesting nature stuff. Beautiful country, I've visited 3 times in the past few years and the Moab area always leaves us with the most memories. Thanks for sharing.
Whoever was doing the hand shadow puppet of Trail Mater on the adjacent rock face at the beginning of this video is very talented... could even make out the spokes in the wheels. 😊
Thanks for sharing your stomping grounds Rory... And Mike, I'm a woodworker, so I loved hearing your explanation of the difference between red and white oak in the field!
Rory, something my late father taught me for temporary fixing a brake line is taking it off the equalizer or master cylinder and putting a short nail in it to blank it off completely. Matt
Epic shadow shot going along the ridge!
Bring trail mater Shadow t shirt back Rory🙏🏼☺️
Would make a great logo
Agreed
YES!!!!
That was pretty cool 😎
Shot of the year!
The Shadow Shot
Great job Mike!
Ya I've seen him hit that shot up revenge a couple times.... Epic! You guys rock!
EPIC! ❤ Great shot and great video as always guys!
The shadow of Trailmator in the beginning of the video looks like a cartoon!
At 0:38 I had to stop and just stare at the screen. What a shot
Would be an awesome logo for a t-shirt or something
Good camera work mike. 👍

For sure you tell he was dead tired.
Mikes commentary on the tree and plant is identification is so great. 👌
I met you that morning at the restaurant and didn't wanna interrupt your breakfast. Thank you again for letting me take pics of trailmater
Good for you that you recognised Rory's right to some privacy and peace. Not everyone is so decent.
Mike adds so much flavor to this channel!
And he is also a tour guide. And a botanist also.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Pre-buffed at 4.25 hahaha😂
He's a character huh ..... All good ppl
Cool idea!!!! The wrecker shadow as a sticker!!!! 😁😁 Would look great. Keep up the great voice for the land and future!!!
Good idea
0:51 that Shadow shot is freakin AWESOME !!!! Nice camera work Mike!
Just thinking the same thing
That could go in a best of Trailmater video and as an image on merch!
Video game? 👍
Looks like Disney
That second recovery at night helps remind us all that you are recovery guys first and youtubers second. Not much to show, but doing your best and keeping it real
WOW! Had to pause this because of the video of the Shadow of the Truck. Super great, Iconic!
showing Trailmater as a shadow bouncing along was great. The guy with the 4Runner can brag he was rescued by none other than Trailmater.
The shadow of TrailMater looks just like a big Tonka Toy ,
Boys love toys, men just have BIGGER toys.
4 hour solo run into the night and snow for a recovery - hard core! Well done!
Shadow would be a nice t shirt design.

Do not apologize Rory ! We appreciate everything you do 🙏🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Rory getting in and just driving this top heavy yota right out of prerel is so freaking awesome! 👍 Always blows my mind! He's definitely one of the best drivers on the planet 👏
And the 50 pounds of tire chains on the front of Trailmaster gave the tires the traction they needed to drive out.
@johnthorpe6333 "His winter beard" 😆
Rory you have the best crew, You all seem to enjoy working together and Mike is awesome at telling us about where you are.
One of the great things about Mike is if doesn't know about an area, he'll just make something up and make it sound convincing, lol. 🤣
if you made that shadow shot into a bumper sticker, say 12" wide and 3" tall, I'd definitely buy a couple....
Always thanks to Mike for learning information
I have said it before, Rory is the GOAT.
It seems there is no limit to the ends Rory will go to in order to make the recovery happen. And no limit to the hights Mike will attain to bring us the best camera angles and stunning silhouette scenes.
that shot from 30 seconds.. never gets old
Loved the shadow shot. The way you guys banter back and forth is epic. Thanks
The silhouette shot is pretty sweet!
Thanks for posting the map to show where you are heading.
Makes it so nice for viewers to know where you are.
Holy crap, those winches draw some power! You can tell how the voltage drops because the LED lights almost went dark completely... 😲😲😲
Great job on the recoveries, guys!! You guys get to see some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Really enjoy being taken along so we can enjoy the views too!! Winter recoveries are always fun to look at.... as long as I'm inside where it nice and warm! LOL!!

Californians ruin everything

That sunset shot when you left Hells. You could see the snow-capped La Sal peaks looked awesome.
Mike gets some sick footage,
They all do an amazing job.
I love Trailmater! It's Awesome!
Love the TM shadow shots
I don’t know what I like more Mike’s side adventures or his storytelling
Great show, nice shadow on the way in, nice job on last one, smart guy just waiting for your crew, nice to see a easy one.
I appreciated Rory's comments at the end about the 4Runner guy afraid he would roll on his side. Nothing beats the experience of this crew!!
They have seen it all
👍👍
Mike, I'm not going to say how cool the shadow shot was. The lighting was perfect! I'm happy to see TM out and about!
Like the anecdotes about nature sprinkled in too.
It is a source of wonderment to me that this wonderful channel has only 259,000 subscribers; what are people watching that is more fun than this???
Always the best camerawork! I love the shadow of Trailmater on the rocks.
God bless Rory,Shawn, and Mike 🙏🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 the men of Moab
Great recoverys guys..... thanks for taking me along
Each time I watch these videos I have more respect for what you do and also for the camera work, I am sitting here in 36C watching you mucking around in snow, Thank you for anything that you film ❤❤❤
Mike got the epic shadow shot , nice.
Nice recoveries. Always a pleasure watching your videos.
Trailmater is the star of the show...what a fantastic team you guys are, as always..👏👏👏
Thanks for another fine video. The explanation about traction boards at the end was nice. That last recovery in the snow also shows the values of working lockers.
Mike's one liners are truly one of the things that make this channel special
Nice mix of recoveries today! Great job(s)!
I had been thinking that the only thing this channel is missing is a shop/rescue dog. Then Shawn shows up with one!
That looked like a TRD Off Road 4Runner. It should have a rear locker. That shadow of Trailmater was awesome against those rocks.
It's a good day when your windshield is not busted.
Love the shadow. Never gets old.
YOU GUYS always amaze me and make me smile. Love you guys.
Awesome! Another Trail Mater video! Thank You Rory AND crew!
Man those are some challenging conditions. I hate the slippery mud/ snow combo.
Good saves on them all.
Trail Mater's shadow is iconic.
Always enjoy Mike’s narration of the trip. Like so many, the shadow Mater was way too cool 😎. Thanks for bringing us along guys👍🇺🇸
Now this was an awesome video with gorgeous scenery along with the snow and muck to get this mountain recovery done. Flipping the Jeep back up on its wheels was a good shot too!

The Snow recoveries are my favorite!
Hhhmmmmm. It’s the season for snow and mud. Let the festivities begin. Great work boys !!!

The TrailMater silhouette is the best
cool silhouette of trail maker going up trail, I'd buy a t-shirt with that on it.
Yes, you guys have the uncommon advantage of knowing EXACTLY when a vehicle will tip over
Mike hasvit going on with botany, geography and all around fun time.
Nice recoveries in those conditions.
Thx
Amazing video and camera work as always. Learn something new every time I watch!
You guys just keep making vids, they are very entertaining, and Mike always adds a bunch of interesting nature stuff. Beautiful country, I've visited 3 times in the past few years and the Moab area always leaves us with the most memories. Thanks for sharing.

Love the commentary on trees and hills etc.
It’s fascinating
Three great recoveries in one video!!! Love them all!!! That wrecker working hard!!!!
You know Rory is busy and Trailmater is working hard, when the steering wheel is covered in mud. Awesome video! As Always
Three nice videos for the price of one. Thanks. It appears that the capability of a vehicle is = to the square of the experience of the driver.
Looked like Trailmater was the perfect rig for pulling that 4Runner up that snowy trail.
Thanks for sharing your stomping grounds Rory...
And Mike, I'm a woodworker, so I loved hearing your explanation of the difference between red and white oak in the field!
Mike on camera! The best
Nice batch of recoveries, even the limited nighttime footage.
I love the tapered wooden beams on the trailer so she goes over the fenders nicely. Good idea.
I love that silhouette shot of Trailmater!! Epic!!
trail mater is just a beast
Yuck lots of mud and snow, lot of work on these recoveries and now the trucks need cleaning, thank you for taking us along
That opening scene between 0:30 to 0:45 should be a sticker, a silhouette or Trailmater on the Moab rocks.
I love when Mike gives us the tour guide information! ❤Don’t stop Mike!
Rory, you need to get winter doors on Trail Mater. As others said, never apologize for doing your job. Good job guys. 😊😊😊😊
Trail Maters shadow was the best thing I’ve seen on RUclips this week.
Bar Nun! Best offroad wrecker 2 date!
Love seeing trailmater out doing what it does best 👌
Trailmater throws an awesome silhouette!
Love the turn around!
Mike is the best cinema guy. He has the eye
Rory, something my late father taught me for temporary fixing a brake line is taking it off the equalizer or master cylinder and putting a short nail in it to blank it off completely. Matt
Nature Mike sharing his botany facts, classic!
Always love Mike's Fun Facts!!! And can someone please tell the guy in the 4Runner.... Lockers before lights (or a roof rack)...
Nice shadow shot!
