At first I thought "Why? We already have a film of this." Then I heard them speaking French and knew this was no mere cash grab. This studio wishes to do the story greater justice, and I am here for it.
If it’s not at least 6 hours long there’s no way they’ll truly do it justice. Not in the way the Gerard Depardieu version (also in French, but he was old for Dantes). But this does look very good.

@@TheShapingSickness it's a mixed bag. I honestly didn't like it because they changed up a lot of little details, without understanding how those details prop up the narrative. They also changed the essence of a lot of characters, some of them even being replaced by a different character. Like most adaptations of this book, it feels like it'll be more enjoyed by people who haven't read the book.
@@suppahfreak4084, this really needs to be a series rather than a movie. There are so many details that cannot be cut in order to fit in a two or three hour package. I was hopeful and I would most likely still watch it but will try not to get as disappointed as I was with the last adaptation.
"Fool that I am that I did not tear out my heart the day I resolved to revenge myself" the count of montre cristo is one of the greatest books ever written, this looks like a very good adaptation
Can you tell me one thing. I am a huge fan of the novel. And it seems that one thing that most adaptations get wrong is that in the Novel, Edmon Dantes betrayal, incarceration in Chateu d'If, escape and location of the treasure are all pretty much prologue. The Real story starts many years late when He arrives in Paris and begins his epic revenge. Most movies seen to spend an inordinate amount of time on the prologue section, sometimes it is the entire first act. Does this movie do a better job with the pacing?
@v2micca I agree with you. The movie gives considerable attention to Dantès' transformation into the Count. As a Dumas lover, I appreciate how the emotions in each event carried the plot forward. While the adaptation differs from the novel, it’s worth watching. From start to finish, it’s breathtaking, with key dialogues from the book beautifully integrated into the movie. Each character, especially Prince Cavalcanti and Haydée, is given depth, serving as conduits for guilt and emotion rather than merely instruments of justice through revenge. The ending brought out the same mixed feelings I had with the book. I am not saying this is perfect. But there's an answer between perfect and bad. Hope this is helpful.
thanks to RUclips for pushing this trailer on my feed, watched today and it SO GOOD. The visuals, the acting, THE SCORE omg, the music in this movie is magnificent.
I don’t speak French, I don’t know how I can access this work of art when it comes out, but I know that I must watch it because it is literally one of my favorite stories of all time and this adaptation is flipping gorgeous
Finally, a version that does the story justice by filming it with dialog in its native French. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the Jim Carviezel version, but it's American actors in a French story. Not only does this version correct it, but its visual scope looks amazing. I'll be seeing this one in a theater...
"So tonight I’ll sing a song to all my friends, Also to those we won’t be seeing again. To those I knew and those I still adore, And I want to see once more… I just pray that you will love me and trust me, Laugh with me and cry with me, Spend those silent times with me. Love me evermore. Love me evermore."
It's closer to the book than the Jim Caviezel's one, but it still has to cut some things out, despite its almost 3 hour runtime. It also changes a few things (for example (light spoiler), Caderousse surprisingly gets a redemption here, instead of dying like he did in the books). I think it's a good adaptation, but it's not the "perfect" one (they would have to make a mini-series to do the book justice).

It will be hard to beat The Count of Monte Cristo with Jim Caviezel and Guy Pierce (2002). That had great acting and is an excellent movie. A little bonus is you see a young Henry Cavill in it too.
I was in France last June for my cousin's wedding and there was a lot of press for this movie (billboards, interviews, etc) and I thought it looked interesting.
Watched it a few weeks ago, and it's a great adaptation of Dumas' masterpiece! Perhaps my second favorite overall - nothing will ever top the British 1975 film starring Richard Chamberlain.
@@mikef2811 Almost (spoilers ahead if you don't mind): it ends the same as the book for the Count and Mercedes, who don't get together at the end of the story, just like they don't in the book. But there is one important difference: Haydée doesn't go with Edmond at the end, she is paired with Albert instead.
It's closer to the book than the 2002 adaptation, but it's not exactly the same. Here's a list of a few differences, if you don't mind the spoilers: - Villefort's father is replaced by Villefort's sister (a brand new character) - The treasure is no longer the treasure of a rich Italian family, but the treasure of the Templars instead - In the book, Caderousse misses his chance to redeem himself and dies a gruesome death. In this movie, he actually gets a redemption. - Some of the younger characters from the second part of the book are missing: Albert, Andrea, Haydée and Eugénie Danglars are still there, but Valentine and Maximilien had to be cut to fit the runtime. - Haydée, while close to the Count, doesn't end up paired with him, like in the book. She ends up with Albert (I guess the romance between someone that young with and older Edmond Dantès was a bit weird, I can understad that change). - Danglars looses all his money like in the book, but the limited runtime of the movie (despite it being 3 hours long) means we don't get to see him imprisoned by Luigi Vampa in Italy. We just see him loose his fortune in Paris. - We don't get to see Fernand kill himself, but he looks pretty defeated the last time we see him, so maybe it's implied? - Because his "official" children are cut of the movie, Villefort doesn't end up insane after the death of his younger son. He gets killed by his illegitimate son (Andrea). Despite all those differences, I think a lot of the main stuff from the book is still there. The scene where the Count plays with the minds of Villefort and his mistress (Danglar's wife) while having dinner in the house where their illegitimate son was born, for example, was my favourite. And, again, it's way closer to the book than the 2002 version.
The problem with trying to make this story into a film is that it’s a saga - you could not even get through it in 3 films … this is what a Netflix series was made for … could run for 5 or 6 seasons … there are novels within the novel and they are brilliant. Amazing book and author.
This is crazy. I just finished reading the book a week ago and I see this. I wonder how they'll change some of the more conterversial plots and elements from that book into a movie for modern audiences.
There's one thing that every adaptation of Monte Cristo has gotten wrong. You need 2 sets of actors. Young, and old. Dantes was ~16 years old when he was put in jail. He was 30 when he escapes prison. He was 39 when he first makes contact with his enemies and their families. And this isn't a "modern" 40, either. We're talking 15 years in 1800's prison, 40. In the book, Dantes never really confirms that it's him til the end. You're 75% sure it's him, but that 25% really drives up the intrigue. But if you have the same actor playing a 16 year old as a 40 year old, there is no doubt.
He was about 19-20. The unabridged version of the book clearly gives his age within the first 2 pages - at least the unabridged version does. (The abridged versions are a joke.) Also the book was very clear that the Count was Dantes, though his enemies didn't know who he was until he destroyed them financially or otherwise. Mercedes was the only one who recognized him from the first. As for the aging, aging an actor is an old established art. I recently saw the Robert Donat 1934 version of the story - I had no problem seeing Donat as a 20-yr-old (he was 29 at the time) and as a 38-40 year old with a mustache and silvering hair. BTW, there have been roughly 30 versions of the story, and I cannot remember one where they got the ending right.
I’m wondering if they are going to show the multiple times The Count shared hashish , taken in edible form? Arguably the first use of recreational edible cannabis seen in Fiction. *I also wonder how the screenwriters dealt with Dumas 117 Chapters that make up His Masterpiece?*
This looks amazing. I wish they would make a movie about the real count this story was based off. The real story is so much better. It was based off Alexander dumas’a father who was a mixed black/white French man and a straight up beast of a soldier.
So, did they change the ending as they've done in every other version out there? Including a French one done 20 years or so ago with a well known French actor.
