Dither is a low-level noise that modulates the least significant bit... It provides an increased noise-floor for signals processed at quieter levels in your master, such as reverb tails, echoes, fades and other time-based fx... Dither is designed to be used when quantizing your 24bit mix to a 16bit stereo glass-master. The reason dither noise exists and why you would use it, is because a 24bit audio file has an extremely high dynamic range and a 320kb/s mp3 does not. So, when converting a very high-resolution audio file to a decimated mp3, you must use some math to step the word length of the file downward so that when the file has been ultimately converted to an mp3 or some other digital streaming codec, you will not completely destroy your mix with digital clipping.
That's not completely accurate. Some of the core ideas you talking about are more or less right, but it has nothing to do with clipping. The problem dither solves is to mask noise that gets created by quantization errors as you reduce the bit depth. The noise from quantization to lower bitrates has a harsh harmonic ring to it, so we cover it up with a neutral sounding dither noise. Note, reducing to MP3 will cause clipping if you are peaking at full scale and so it is important to leave about 1-1.3 db true peak headroom before converting to Mp3, but dither has nothing to do with that and won't solve that problem.
rich MISH you use it on the master chain actually rather than individual plugins from my understanding. I know Ozone has a module for dithering, same with logic

I use fl, ableton is probably the daw I'm least familiar with. Can somebody explain exactly how he's routing and paralleling? Also would the stereo plugins just be on a parallel?
Just curious - if I did this in ProTools (2020), what would be the equivalent of the way you put these plugs in parallel? Just duplicate the mix in another track and stack them up on that one, dropping it's volume to control the blend? Or a new parallel track for each plug to control each plugs particular blend? Thanks!
Perfect timing, just picked up the complete waves package and have been wondering what the best mastering chain with them would be, im loving the Infected mushroom pusher, its really helped me with loudness and punch in my tracks
hey man good tutorial video i actually had an idea to apply with some projects involving puppets is there anywhere i can have them custom made that you would possibly know of?
Frickin funny but so handy to know, I use Ableton and all those plugins and even after being at college for the last year using Ableton I still don't know my way around it fully and your tutorials are brilliant. Thanks Stefan you da man 😁😂👍👍
This is amazing thanks Reid. One question for applying this in PT: If using this method in Pro Tools to run parallel efx, would you literally duplicate your stereo mix onto 4 separate stereo tracks and blend to taste? As in... one dry stereo track, one with SSL comp, one with J37 etc - going into your master fader with the limiters?
How did you get the SSL Comp to work with Abelton?? All the blogs I searched said WAVES (AU) was not compatible with Abelton. But I don't have SSLComp as a VST!!
L maximizer went on dry signal? Or parallel? But isnt all those plugins running in parallel seperate tracks? Or all on one aux.. One after the other on same chain? Confused
my teacher i have big problem why my song i recorded and master in ableton it sound pitched when i share it to any cellphone..please let me know what to do ...doesnt hear original
Hey I use pro tools I noticed you said “add to the chain” “mix in with the dry signal” and you lowered individual plug-ins volume on that chain. But how would that work to just throwing it on the master track in pro tools?
When your putting the plugins parallel to the dry signal; how would you do that in FL studio? Would you put all your mastering plugins on a different channel and send that signal to the master channel?
Hi Reid thank you so much for this series. You are awesome ! Keep doing the good work. Just a query, i find this rack system more handy rather than creating separate return tracks. But how can i have stereo split panning for each chain ?
Is there any way to do this but with Logic Pro I have all the plug-ins from wave that he mentioned but I can't quite get it to work out the way Reid has
Fire as usual. Not to sure how many other producers work like this but I usually export stems from ableton and mix/track/record in pro tools. I would be very interested to see you stem out a project from ableton import it into pro tools, mix, then master it. Also you might already have a video like this that I haven’t seen, if that is the case I apologize.
I wanna say the reason is because of the true peak limiting coming in, I may be wrong but the output ceiling on the L1 was at 0 but everyone recommends putting true peak at -1 to avoid this
Omar Magana lately I’ve been leaving my mastering limiters in the default position 0.0 and relying on my mixdown for loudness rather than pushing a limiter like in this video!
Idk what I’m doing wrong, I got the waves pack awhile ago and most of the plugs in make all my vocals/instruments etc sound super flat and strange. Like almost low quality, I’m obviously doing something wrong please someone please help me
Such a dope track! I'm learning a lot from you vids, thanks man. I'm a mastering newbie, but I've seen some guys use M/S EQ and Stereo Widening on the chain, how come you didn't do that? Also, did you master all your tracks on the album, they're clean!
Midside can really help get the vocals to ride above the instrumentals, etc. I do most of that in my mixdown before mastering, but I do some ms eq for some masters.
Its impressing to me the way youre literally processing the same signal like 10 times on parallel with different plugins, isnt the signal just multiplying all the time? Even tho youre controlling the volume of every chain
Yes and no. The signal IS getting louder but not in the same way as if you were to just turn up the volume. You still keep your original sound with original transients but he’s blending in a compressed send signal into his other send to create a more “powerful” mix effect.
Thank you so much for the tips man really helped out as I am a complete beginner but I did notice that after adding the ultra maximizer it became too much for my track and began distorting. I want to keep messing around with it as I move forward though.
Love you channel, but i liked the other mastering video with the UAD plugins better, it sounded awesome and natural. This one sounded a bit harsh and squashed. Would like to see a video where you talk about loudness and headroom!
how do you make it meet the commercial loudness standards...? my only problem is getting all my tracks at the same volume. should i look at RMS or LUTS???
this is a beautiful channel

I was just searching your page for a Waves/Ableton video for mastering. Perfect timing!! Keep rocking Reid 🤙
wow that parallel procecing add so much, didn't know it was a thing in mastering, thanks a lot :3

Watching this again in 2022! Thank u so much for this info! Question: do u ever use any direct inserts/plug ins when mastering? Or mostly parallel?
Nice little walk through, and hilarious too :) I'm really starting to get into Waves plugins lately, so thanks!

Thank You! Do you have one for Hard Rock or Pop Punk? Maybe just some pointers on specific adjustments to this Chain? (Not Djent Metal)
Do you think Pro Tools is better at tracking and comping vocals than Logic?
Yes and mixing PT is better by far
