Lumix GH7 is misunderstood, why?

- This video turned into a discussion instead of a review after using it since day of release, trying to dive into why so few are talking about it half a year later. What happened and who is the GH7 for?
There are many great mirrorless videocameras and most of them will do for most jobs nowdays, whatever floats the boat, but if you really want to pick things appart I think there are points to be made with the Lumix GH7 and it's target audience and who it's advantageous for, compromising using a MFT sensor.
And maybe answer why there is so little content about it on youtube compared to other cameras.
*Another pro to the GH7 I didn’t mention in this video is the Pixel by Pixel function, which allows to have an additional zoom by using a smaller area of the sensor while maintaining 4k resolution. I calculated it to give an approximate 17mm zoom.
I do not advice anyone to go into a warzone.
If Lumix is here, things I’d add to the GH7,
1) Dual native ISO
2) Mini XLR input with internal 32 bit float
3 Internal Braw
Gear used in this video:
Panasonic Lumix GH7
Metabones Ultra 0.71x Speedbooster EF-MFT with 4.10 update
Sigma 24-105mm (at about 50mm zoom, caused some seeking in this scene as you'll notice)
Freewell V.2 Hybrid VND/CPL filter
Freewell Snowmist filter
Lexar CFExpress Type B Silver Pro 512 Gigabytes

Agreed that this is the ultimate travel/adventure camera, especially when paired with a speedbooster, the f1.7 zooms, or a couple of fast primes. The incredible IBIS means no gimbal. 32-bit float and 4-channel audio means no recorder. Incredible codecs. etc. Great video!
A better IBIS can in some cases mean a useable shot vs a unuseable one! same with 32 bit float audio, it can save takes, and that is more valuable then many other specs in a camera for our field! Great camera to be excited about. Thanks mate!
Wow. Be safe out there. Valuable information. Thanks for sharing.
@@RockWILK Thanks alot!
@ really amazing work. I don’t think most people who watch these camera channels understand that a lot of filmmakers literally risk their lives getting us information around the world that we need to see. I have so much respect for the work that you’re doing, and that you even take the time to talk about this camera. I actually think this video is the best type of description of a camera that any of us can watch. It’s kind of the only camera video that matters. :-)What should you actually use it for? Because basically, all the specs are the same on every camera. Pretty much. Anyway, take care of yourself out there, it’s a dangerous world. Great work. Much respect.
@@RockWILK Thanks alot man, I'm humbled by your comment!
Respect for courage and motiviation to do this documentries like that. There is possible to see this documentary somewhere?
@@ryszardzokowski812 Thanks man I appreciate it. It’s in the endstages of production, so not published yet. Thrilled to share.
Great video. I'm running with the S5ii, a fantastic camera. I shot a feature film with the GH5, so I am a big fan of Panasonic LUMIX cameras.
That being said, I have a lot of respect for what you are doing by capturing a real world conflict. Be safe. And know that what you're doing is a great service by capturing what will be important on a historical level.
@@AllThingsFilm1 Thanks alot. All these 4k sensors can do pretty much al almost anything nowdays, but I think the pricetag along with the list of features confuses many.
I enjoy what I do and happy to share stuff like this. Take care friend!
I bought this camera and I'm incredibly happy with it thought,
should I buy arri logc3 for further updates?
@@ニコルソン-b5s Great cam! Like it alot too.
The Arri Log is as I understand just a gamma profile but they mapped the gh7 sensor, which is sick. It’s good if you want to work in a Arri workflow, if you don’t know any direct benefit from it, someone on the internet called it a 200 dollar LUT, which is harsh but maybe true. Personally I would only get it if a client asks for arri log specifically.
@@AdrianvandenBroeck
I actually decided to buy it after watching your video lol.
Your lens and speed booster were also helpful.
Thanks for the reply, that was helpful. I will give it some more consideration.
Good luck with your production!
Very informative video 👍
Excellent assessment!! Be safe dude!!
@@osah8477 Thanks man !
I heard bird face detection is limited in 4k120 video mode
Thanks for the video. Good point about the GH7 being an "outdoor" run and gun camera. If only the GH7 recorded either BRAW recording internally, or if Panasonic developed their own RAW codec (similar to how Nikon has N-RAW internally in their Z6III, which can be editied in DaVinci Resolve), that would have made it a must have for me. Also, thanks so much for doing the documentary in Ukraine.
I agree, Internal Braw and dual native iso would have been on the top wish-list. Thanks alot man.
Seriously, if Lumix gets BRAW, I'm immediately buying their cameras-- It's honestly that good.
BRAW / resolve supporting prores raw would be amazing
One more thing, with smaller sensors you get wider dof even at fast aperture values. Also couple of Lumix Leica zoom lenses cover entire focal length range of 4 full frame zoom lenses.
True, that can be an advantage for some while others wants a more shallow DOF.
I got the kit together with the lumix 12-60 f3.5 and it's great, weights nothing. Does some 12-78mm if you also include the GH7 pixel by pixel function.
I've been a long time user of micro 4/3, but I've already succumbed to the lure of FF. However, I agree with what you say about the advantages and perhaps the focus Panasonic's marketing should focus on. And much respect for what and where you shoot!
@@kaba-k3191 The fullframe colors and look can’t be beaten by 4/3. The image of the FX3 and blackmagic cinema camera 6k is just beautiful. But I would have missed many shots that I got with the gh7 if I had brought those cameras. Thanks alot mate!
I've been using the pocket 4K with a .64 speed booster to EF and it has a wider FOV than Super 35 and does amazing in low light. After the $300 discount Black magic did, it's honestly the best Cinema camera for the price! The gh7 was close on my list, but after working with B-Raw, I honestly can't see myself using a camera that doesn't have it
@@MtZionMediaPro Having Braw in the GH7 and other lumix cameras would be perfect, let’s hope blackmagic will lease that license if they dont plan on making their own hybrid cameras.
@@AdrianvandenBroeck while BRAW is available on the GH7 and S5IIX etc with a couple of Blackmagic monitors via HDMI, my understanding is that it isn’t as good as the internal BRAW on their own cameras. Do you k ow whether that is correct?
@@Democratiser It works but have to apply an external monitor (Blackmagic assist) which is hard to carry on a run and gun rig, and the lumix cameras suffers from hdmi-lag. Not optimal for this type of work.
What about the low light?
Opinion seems split that it's usable only up to 1600 and some say it's usable up to 6400?
@@ericfernando4296 I struggled with the Lumix 12-60 at f3.5 during nighttime when I couldn’t light the scene. Good during daytime. But not an issue with any lens below f2.0 at iso 5000 (I wouldnt push beyond that), especially with a speedbooster. Love the Lumix 12-60 though because its so light and versatile.
Dual native iso would have made alot of sence on the gh7 and my biggest personal remark to it.
Bro! You should make this exact video again and tell that story on the front end.
The red light mode is an extremely unique usecase that I have not heard of before and no other consumer level cameras have this feature that I know of.
Even just mentioning that you will tell a story about it earlier on would likely help with retention.
But that was the most riveting part of this video by far. Not telling stories of war for clicks but an unsung feature of a camera that is applicable even in times of war. Crazy!
@@codythep Thanks alot man! I’ve been thinking of making videos with purely camera related experiences and stories from Ukraine but just haven’t had the time yet.. Maybe when the war is over. Take care!
Would you recommend ghe lumix GH5 mark ii
@@Culturelens It depends what you need the camera for. My advice is always to make a list of things that are important in a camera for your work and work from there, so that you dont pay alot of money for features you won’t need. I didnt pay much attention to the GH cameras before PDFA and internal raw was introduced.
If you are ok with manual focusing then the GH5ii is a good choice (and really quite cheap now)
The original GH5 was legendary and the mkii is improved but also the processor is newer and can receive firmware updates that the original GH5 can no longer do.
I have the S5iix and GH7 and love both. The only thing I don’t like is that they both seem susceptible to IR pollution and/or magenta shift. Have you noticed this and if so, how do you compensate?
I usually grade pretty vividly so these small variations doesn't change much. Rarely go for a realistic grade, haven't noticed it much when I do. I don't compensate.
Nice video, it should be marketed differently towards various target audiences.
For the most part I agree & just bought the camera, but I think it is good for conferences, sports, & wildlife as well because of the 2x crop factor reach.
For those that are wondering about shallow DOF, that’s usually not that important in tele shooting, f4, 5.6, or even more stopped down is what is commonly used for those situations.
*interesting red light situation
@@Zeidify Thanks, you are right it would be perfect for a whole bunch of sports too!
The people I know doing conferences have been using blackmagic on AC-power because it’s sufficient and Braw is a good trade off between quality and file-size, Good internal fans. I’m thinking the GH7 is probably overkill in the other specs and better to trade some of it for dual native ISO.
@ Both are good, but after using the focal reducer we get an extra stop of light 😉 & need to stabilization when going off tripod
i love my gh7 the image is fantastic and the camera can do as much or more than much more expensive cameras.
@@andersistbesser Great! Yes, very pleased here too.
Great comments! We're also adding the GH7 to our camera lineup mainly for documentary use in the field. The GH LUMIX series has always been reliable, faster and easier for us in documentary work and we've produced three features with their cameras with very few issues. Where can we see the Ukraine film you're working on?
Thanks ! It will most likely be a great addition to the kit making these type of jobs. The doc from Ukraine is in end-stages of production, can’t wait to share it.
Totally agree. The GH7 is the most powerful package that can fit in your hands. The marketing could be doing a much better job about how special this camera is.
@@TheBlakeEverhart Most probably!
I'm a low-budget filmmaker and considering the GH7. Full frame is probably too expensive and bulky for me - I have made 2 short films on the GH5S so switching to the GH7 would be very seamless as I can use all my gear. Aslo having the autofocus would be a huge help when I'm filming stuff without a crew.
@@Shane0632 Awesome cams. Have you compared your needs to the Lumix S5ii? It has the same pdfa but is fullframe for a more affordable price. But if you already own lenses for a gh5 it might be cheaper in the end if it saves you from getting new ones.
You can definitely make great narratives with the GH7. Please don’t listen to this guy.
@@rovingearth7028 Of course you can, most cameras are good nowdays, but different cameras are better suited for different type of jobs.
@@AdrianvandenBroeck movies are even made with iPhones, you just have to know the limits of the tool you have.
@@O.W_Films And where they are excessive if you go to buy a 2100 dollar MFT camera.
I was listening to you but immediately tuned out after you said this isn’t for narrative filmmaking. You can absolutely make a narrative film with the GH7. It’s just like any other camera that’s considered capable.
Of course, most 4k cameras nowdays are amazing especially compared to what people made awesome films with 10 years ago. But different cameras have different strengths and better suited for different jobs.
Its price is the biggest issue. Way to expensive when full frame cameras are the same price or even less that can do most of what it can do.
@@heynow2880 I agree, its a pricy MFT-camera.. But crammed with useful features that makes it great for some specific tasks.
@ if it was full frame that would change things
After Nikon released the Z6III for $2400 changed everything
@@heynow2880 I was very on the fence about going FF, but one thing I hated was how big the lenses are. I borrowed a FF nikon and was shooting sports with a 400mm lens ... my gawd that thing was heavy. I really appreciate how small and light the MFT lenses are. Which is ultimately why I stayed with MFT. It is too bad how big the Gh7 is. I liked the g9ii better, but I ran into overheating issues when filming 4k120
You obviously do not know what you are talking about. It's the disinformation marketed by many RUclipsrs, unfortunately, that has individuals like yourself saying comments like this.
@@heynow2880 ... have you used that camera??? Spec sheet looks real good... how does it perform in the field? Does it overheat? I know for a fact that the Z8 does... quite a few complained about the image output/DR under certain situations. I would like to see more use cases with the Z6III. There's not enough to choose it for video over the GH7... being full-frame is not the only important thing.
You are a legend! Great review. Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦
@@Democratiser Comment made my day. 💛 Glory to the heroes
You mentioned this might not be good for making a movie, but the footage from your Ukraine project really looks like a movie to me 😂
@@Sodacake Thanks bro, I used the S5 before and to me it brough better colors, highlights didn’t clip as easily and I found it a little less noisy. Not by a huge amount but noticeable.
@@AdrianvandenBroeck Personally I don't mind a little noise. I don't like super clean images anyway and I will probably end up using some film emulation anyway.
@@Sodacake the noise itself actually looks good from this camera I think. Better then with blackmagic.
@@AdrianvandenBroeck I think so too from the tests I have seen. The pattern looks more organic than digital noise usually looks.
@@Sodacake Yeah, not getting those horizontal stripes unless I’m at the max ISO settings and its dark, Which is great.
Hated the GH7 ad Lumix did for it. Compare it to the GH4, GH5, GH5s Lumix ads and it was marketed much better. Then since the GH6, the marketing and advertising has been poor. Same for S5, S5ii
@@Filmmaker809 I guess they try to widen their target audience as much as possible even if the cameras themselves have a niche. They know that experienced users will seek the tools they need and hobbyists/ordinary users might pay for features they don’t actually need, especially if they buy cams from sellers in the stores and don’t do research online. If that is not too cynical to think.
@@AdrianvandenBroeck Good answer. But Lumix in the UK have been making massive mistakes, not supporting filmmakers with the Ambassador programme like they do in USA.
No, this is not less advantageous for feature films. Indie feature films with low budget who can't afford Arri Alexas. It is fit for everything you have put an "X" on too. Except vlogging. You are also making the same big mistake of "full frame". It now feels like an empty, irrational cry from youtubers mainly. "Full frame!" No offence. I like the video but don't agree with those two differentiating segments you made.
@@RavikantRai21490 You can make whatever you want with the gh7. But you have to justify paying 2100$ and getting a world of features that might not be needed for feature films. Mechanical stills-shutter, PDFA and Lumix cameras suffer from HDMI lag for monitors. A 600$ adapter to get XLR audio and another 200$ for the Alexa license.
I personally wouldn’t advise a indie feature film maker to get a gh7 instead of a for example bmpcc4k, if mft is a must. But there you get internal braw/prores with a color science created for cinema, internal XLR audio and a good monitor for 1100$ while still keeping internal fans / ssd recording.
The GH7 is a awesome camera but has a specific niche, I’m sure people who do what I wrote as less advantageous buy it for such purposes anyways, maybe because it can be crossed into other fields of work too. :)
