Bought this vise about 5 years ago after your initial video. It’s seen two shops and now lives on a mobile rig. Hasn’t missed a beat.

On the Yost website, they say the updated version is made from Austempered Ductile Cast Iron (ADI) and has tensile strength of 130,000 psi, and is 45% stronger than this older version, which would put this one at about 90,000 psi. And the body and moving jaw of the ADI model are one piece castings with no welding. For reference, standard grey cast iron (which is what all the super cheapo chi-comm vises are made from) is about 30,000 psi. Ductile cast iron is about 60,000 psi. On the negative side, Yost has them made in China now instead of Tawian.

Almost identical to Capri's and Fireball's except Fireball got the base changed to a 2" square mounting base specifically for welding tables.

Perform those tests on a stable base, as much of your swing and drive are lost to the movement of the entire assembly. Still thinking of that vise.

I’ve got the 8” version. I welded huge steel balls to the ends of the handle. Great vise so far! 👍🏻

I agree with ya on Wilton existing on a different plane of reality with prices. For that price I'll buy a decent brand used 6" vise with a stand and another 4" for the bench. And have money left over. Great review!

I have one of the grey cast iron vises and while it's decent for my needs, I'd probably pick up one of these given the price to quality ratio. You demonstrated this very well.

Your dead right ChuckE about Taiwan manufacturing quality, it is good stuff! That vice post you built is also superb, it copped more abuse than I expected it to handle!

They also are identical to Facom vise's. It's not likely to be replicas, but a private label company is manufacturing for them all.

I bought that same vise for my dad and it's damn good. But in my shop I have a 1918 pat date Reed 105 I think and a Old parker 974 vise which is like mint condition. They are made to last. The Reed is a fixed mount which I love and the parker swivels but has its own spring loaded in place wrench for tightening and loosening the swivel base. And it won't move after tightening it. They're not made from cast like alot of today's vises. I guess there made from malleable steel but not sure. What metal cutting saw did you get that is like the abrasive chop saw but has the steel blade and doesn't turn as fast? Kinda like a cold saw but no fluid required?

Chas Parker knew how to build a vise! I got an 80 year old Columbian that I'd trust over ANY new Amazon product.

I'll be honest I don't think I have ever used a hammer on a vice handle or a cheater it always seemed adequate by hand but I also have a press so I haven't really used one as a press

It’s cast or forged, but cannot be both. Forged steel is significantly stronger and more durable and a metric crap ton more expensive.

And now they make them with Austempered Ductile Iton (ADI) which apparently is supposed to be 45% stronger than their steel versions.

Yost, Olsa, Capri, Fireball. AT LEAST all four are the same vise, just different paint and label. Not that there's anything wrong with that... But Yost isnt making this vise.
