You mean to tell me I typed in all those channels to use my hotspot and THEN you put this out? Hahahaha. Awesome information in these videos. Thank you! I just spent a long time figuring out DMR. I learned a lot along the way. A friend bought the OpenSpot3 and the 878. He was going to just give me the 878 that he hadn't even used because he couldn't get it working right. I told him I'd figure it out for him because he can use the one HT in his car and be on DMR, DSTAR and YSF with the OpenSpot. Gave me the push I needed to get it figured out. I'm KD4CHW by the way.
I like to keep my DMR simple! One channel per Hotspot and repeater. I always have the radio in promiscuous mode (digital monitor). I have only loaded about 50 or so talkgroups in the talk group list. Have About 115 programmed static talk groups in the Hotspot. Just had a VK station calling CQ in TG 2350 and had a QSO at 2AM!. DMR never sleeps! I have a few other videos on how to supercharge the 878. Manual dialing my way through DMR! Thanks for watching!
I've only watched a few of your videos so far. WOW! At the risk of sounding like some kind of 77 year old "fanboy", you are officially my digital radio GURU! Keep up the good work!!!! KB9KQU
Thank you, Greg! I have a few videos involving th 878 and some of its cool features. If you you watch some of the techniques I use with this radio, you can truly make DMR, fun, easy, and QSO's to anywhere. The fact that TG 505 Australia popped out of my Hotspot via static talk groups, presented a nice surprising opportunity in the video! Hope to hear you on the airwaves!
K9WLW Radio I will check the other Anytone videos out. Your style is easy to learn from. I actually took your idea from the ID51a and configured my icom 9700 the same way to use with my Openspot3. Now I can repeater link from my hotspot as well using your call. Thanks again. I I will give 505 a listen. 👍
I hope it helped. One channel is all it takes for one hotspot. Manual dial+digital monitor (promiscuous mode)=goodbye to ridiculous codeplugs and infinite talkgroups in 1 channel! 73 de K9WLW!
One thought about ‘one’ memory channel is this, IF a ham is on a disaster & the net is down, you’d need all the frequencies programmed to go directly to the repeater to use the radio as one would analog frequencies
I agree, but the 878 is not the radio that I would use for analog use. The ID-51 runs circles around the Anytone in the analog world of scanning and CTCSS tone scanning. Plus it is way easier to program by hand in the field.
@@FriendBears no problem. I love the 878 on DMR. I use digital monitor full time, and also exclusively use manual dial for quick QSY from my one channel per hotspot approach. Killer battery, good value DMR workhorse. I use it though pi-star for DMR2NXDN. When I travel I take 2 radios. Anytone 878 AND ID-51. I can use the Anytone for DMR, DMR2YSF, and DMR2NXDN. I use the Icom for analog and DStar.
I prefer to add memory channels this way in the field, and then I can transfer them to my codeplug from the radio for backup or cloning! Thanks for watching.
My Alinco DJ-MD5X is very Easy for My Hotspot, You Right about using One frequency the Hotspot, because in DMR all You needs is the Talk Groups, unlike Analog Mode,
I'm a little late to the DMR party, just got my D878UVII Plus a few days ago. I've only been on Wires-X / System Fusion for digital FM up to this point. Your videos are a breath of fresh air on using the radio instead "learning to code". One quick question is the "null connector" an OpenSpot specific feature? I do not see that option on my Pi-Star configuration page. Thanks again, N5JGE.
The Null connector is strictly an Openspot thing. The Openspot automatically connects to Null connector when you keyup the unlink Reflector command in the DStar radio. It also does it if you press the Unllink command on a fusion radio. The DMR 4000 group call unlink command is just to get out of all dynamic talkgroups. DMR is different in that you still remain connected to the DMR server. In all the other modes, you hop from IP address to IP address when you switch reflectors. In DMR, you remain connected to just ONE IP address when you connect to A DMR server. Talkgroups do not themselves have IP addresses, hence their dynamic nature. The only way to unlink from a DMR server in pi-star entirely is to switch DMR mode off and apply changes. The Openspot can be disconnected from a DMR server, but only by manually using the dashboard to manually connect to null. That way it can remain on wi-fi standby and still receive automatic firmware and callsign/server updates.
@@jimedmondson5893 no problem. Here is a cool way to use pi-star if you have, Fusion, DStar, and DMR radios with all 3 modes left on at the same time. If you make your YSF startup host "None", set you default Reflector on DStar to any reflector but hit the manual button to the right, and load up your DMR server in DMR configuration, you can easily switch modes by addressing the hotspot with radio commands. Done with DStar, just kerchunk and unlink reflector command and wait for 20 seconds. Grab the Fusion radio, hit the wires X button to activate a YSF reflector. When done, hit the Band button to unlink YSF reflector. Wait 20 seconds, keyup at DMR talkgroups. When done, just group call 4000 and wait 20 seconds. That way you can just address the hotspot with radio commands from all 3 modes, as long as unlink all the modes before you address the hotspot. That way you don't have to constantly use the dashboard to turn modes on and off. When your hotspot reboots after middle of the night pi-star updates, it will be automatically unlinked and waiting for you to return with radio commands!
Great Info, not that hard... So with a Pi-star Hotspot, and the Anytone 878 can we add all the talk groups we want to listen to into Brandmiester under my Hotspot, Static Talkgroups? Will the raido monitor them all?
If we place the radio in Digital Monitor mode, it will play the audio from any talkgroup that the hotspot transmits. I currently scan over 250 static talkgroups at a time.
All the software I’ve seen for this radio is windows! Is there anything Lenix out there? The person who is helping me is using Lenix and I’m blind so this is in an adventure for me! Any ideas?
I don't believe it has AM. If you are in VFO mode and wish to set a channel for Analog FM you have to hit the menu button and hit New Channel to create a new memory channel. In channel type you select Analog. There is another list of menu options for offset, CTCSS etc. I wouldn't recommend changing an existing memory channel from digital to analog. It is better to create an analog memory from the vfo from scratch.
@@k9wlwradio309 ok thanks for the info. i have 2 air medical chopper frequencies programmed in it and they dont come in the best and someone suggested that i didnt have it set to am as all aircraft are am i may just end up leaving it alone
@@roadrunner52 I would suggest using, Icom, Yaesu, Kenwood, or Alice radios for Analog AM and FM. Far easier to program, much better at scanning, and in my humble opinion far better receivers. As much as I like the Anytone on DMR, I am very disappointed in its Analog performance. Even the lower end radios from the above manufacturers work pretty well.

If I want to stop a talk group from talking how can I stop it or post that one and go to the next channel on my static hotspot
To stop a static talkgroup you have to remove the static talkgroup from the hotspot. That would depend on what type of hotspot you are using.
Too hard to watch. Hold the camera still.
A fair criticism. But did you learn anything like the previous commenters?
