In one of the versions of William Tell he takes out two arrows and after shooting the apple successfully, the one who forced him to shoot the Apple from his son's head, asked him if he was such a good Archer why had he taken out two arrows?
His answer was that if anything had happened to deflect his arrow and his boy was injured then the second arrow was for him.
