FRASIER: "Oh, just something that happened the other morning. I asked Dad to pass me a bran muffin, you know what he said to me? He said "What's the magic word?"
    NILES: You're kidding!
FRASIER: He didn't think it was very amusing when I said "rest home"!

Martin is sometimes kind of ungrateful. I don't think Frasier makes him pay rent for living with him and he can't do some simple chores. Nothing wrong with wanting a clean home even if he can be a little bit to meticulous and tidy. Frasier is a nice guy taking care of his dad.

Yep, hes a totally imperfect character, they all are. Reason #923523 why Frasier is the best written show ever to hit tv.

Martin is also a charicature of the generation where mens work was their job and housework was for women unless it was mowing the lawn or carving the turkey lol. So he probably expected his whole life to be waited on by others when he got home, being a "mans man" he would feel housework was beneath him because that was the mood of the 40s and 50s. Who knows, maybe that frustration of being expected to be a housewife while also being a highly intelligent working woman in the field of science contributed to Hesters affair. It was certainly a kind of common story in the 60s that lead to the first waves of womens lib, and the time of Hesters affair would be around 1960-1961 according to S1E8. (Niles was around 41 at the first season of the show in 1993, the summer at the lake when he wrote in his diary about the affair he said he was "almost 9".) In the end of the same episode Martin says "don't hate your mother for this, I wasn't the easiest person to live with back then and she had plenty of reason for doing what she did". So yes, Martin isn't a perfect person either and we can see a lot of that toxic masculinity and anger he carries in the very beginning of the show mellow out when he comes to term with having to slowly let go of that role, and open up to Frasier to deepen their relationship and be able to live together. But I think it's one of those "can't teach an old dog new tricks"-things where he is still set in many of his ways.

Any sensible person would have thrown out that freeloading jack*** much earlier. Screw family ties. Someone who acts like that deserves the street.
