DVORAK 9th is obviously one of the best symphonies ever. My youth orchestra is playing the whole thing next month. Happy to see on this list, I play the cello

Omfg finally someone else who loves Prokofiev's 2nd symphony!!! (Personally) I think it's one of the most innovative pieces ever written. The emotions in this piece are so hard to describe in words; all I can say is that they appeal to someone with anxiety issues like me haha I love Prokofiev's 3rd symphony as well these two are my two favourite symphonies!!! I like how this recording makes the trumpets in the last movement really stand out Also, Dvorak's 9th before Shostakovich's 8th??? Like seriously?!!! Come on!!
Some excellent choices. I would probably have Mahler's 3rd on there, as well as Bruckner's 8th; Shostakovich 4th; Haydn #88; Walton 1st; Copland 3rd; Hindemith Mathis der Maler; Saint-Saens 3rd; Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique; just a few listening suggestions. Thanks for posting.

I know It’s not generally classed in the same level as some of these, but I find Rachmaninoff’s 2nd as on of the greatest pieces I’ve ever heard. It’s just so moving, and complex yet still accessible. Other than that I think it’s a great list!

Here's my 10 cents' worth: 10. Dvorak 7 9. Berlioz Fantastique 8. Brahms 3 7. Haydn 49 6. Beethoven 5 5. Tchaikovsky 5 4. Mahler 2 3. Schubert 8 2. Beethoven 3 1. Mahler 9 Hard to pick, as there are so many. To me, the 3 standout symphonic composers are Mahler, Beethoven & Haydn (all in very different ways); so MANY of their symphonies could be considered. And a number of other composers aren't too far off - esp. Schubert (4, 5 & 9), Brahms (1 & 4), Shostakovich (5, 8 & 10), Sibelius (almost any of them), Dvorak (6, 8 & 9), Bruckner (7 & 8), and Tchaikovsky (4 & 6). Mozart was of course a supreme genius, but to me his symphonies are not his best works - tho nos 38 & 39 come pretty close. A couple of others which nobody seems to have considered are Franck's only symphony, Elgar no.1, Gounod no. 2, and Gorecki no. 3. I assume Berlioz's 'dramatic symphony' Romeo & Juliet doesn't count - or else it would be way up there in my top 10!
I'm not into such modern composers As You Are. The so-called melodies In much more modern classical music just makes me feel like I'm constantly being attacked by crows
Je suis d'accord avec ces choix, je me serai quand même débrouillé pour mettre une symphonie de Bruckner, par exemple le final de la 4ième ou le début de la 9ième.

@Heavenshakerable The format is "supposed" to be open for all. Maybe not for playstation portable (it is that?). It has more chances that the music are protected by copy right law. Good day Alexandre
Good list, although only 2 of you top 10 symphonies would have made my top 10. Actually my top 10 would be rather monotonous: Beethoven 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, Bruckner 7, 8, 9, Schubert 8, 9. Order to be figured out. Tchaikovsky? Close. Schumann? Close. Brahms, Mahler, Prokofiev? No.
My personal top 8 (symphonies that have deeply influenced me) 8) 2nd Beethoven 7) 5th Beethoven 6) 2nd Mahler 5) 7th Bruckner 4) Mozart 40th 3) Kalinnikov 1st 2) Beethoven 9th 1) Tchaikovski 5th
That reminds me of a music student who decided to"bait" his music teacher (a known lecturer on the greatness of J. S. Bach). He says to the teacher "you know, I don't like Bach at all, I think he is greatly over-rated." Everyone in the class waited in silence for the fur to fly. The teacher said simply "Well, I am sure Mr. Bach will be greatly saddened to hear that," meaning that Bach is an accepted fact. So it is with Mozart. It's a done deal.
My personal Top 10 at this time, trying to not put Mahler on 1-10: 10. Sibelius 2 9. Tchaikovsky 4 8. Saint-Saens 3 7. Mahler 3 6. Brahms 4 5. Mahler 4 4. Beethoven 9 3. Dvorak 9 2. Mahler 8 1. Mahler 2 honorable mentions: Mozart 41, Tchaikovsky 5, Beethoven 5, Brahms 1, Schubert 9
An interesting list but I would take out the Mahler 4 and replace it with the Shostakovich 7th if your going for powerful, dramatic music. Of course the Mahler 2nd and 8th are the most dramatic symphonies in the repertoire
My list would probably include Mahler (1,5,6,9), Shostakovich (4,5,8,15) + Dvorak's 'New World' + Shubert's 'Unfinished'. (Not that I don't like the mighty Beethoven, but his symphonies seem somehow DISTANT to me. The opposite of that would be Shostakovich's 15th that speaks DIRECTLY to me using my language... whatever that means)
Hard fir me to grasp how someone loving music would not love Mozart. Requiem, C major Mass, Magic Flute, the clarinet concerto or the great piano concertos don’t do anything for you?
The Best Symphonies Arvo Pärt Symphony no 3 Valentin Silvestrov Symphony no 5 Aleksandr Moyzes Symphony no 10! Sibelius no 2 Bruckner Symphonies 1st 2nd 6th 7th Mozart 25 Haydn 45 92 Beethoven 3th (Baptiste Vanhal Symphonies d Minor and g Minor!!)
In fact, Mozart excellent on the forefront of music, that is to say, the melodic plane. But the accompaniment of Mozart are often low, the counterpoint is simple, virtuosity is average, unlike JS Bach and Beethoven. Structures are often mild, it was the Viennese style of the time, the way I love this style, do not see it as discrimination. I much prefer Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach than Mozart or Hyadn for classic pure.
Marisa Louisa I was supposed to hear Mahler 6 at my university’s performance center a couple weeks ago. I did get to hear them play Symphonie Fantastique in the fall though. That is definitely a top 10 for me.
Valentin Silvestrov Symphony no 5 Arvo Pärt Symphony no 3 Aleksandr Moyzes Symphony no 10 Bruckner Symphonies 1 2 6 7 Sibelius 1 2 Beethoven 3 Haydn 45 92 Baptiste Vanhal Symphonies d Minor and g Minor!!
Well, according to the vote of top 151 conductors, Mozart 41st came 3rd in the greatest symphonies list, just below Beethoven 3rd and 9th. Just sayin........ (I see an intense debate on Mozart here)
@Jeb Clar No. Bruckner was more influential, but Mahler developed symphony to unprecedented heights. For me, Mahler is better, although I love Bruckner very much. You love Bruckner, and I love Mahler, but let's go without fanaticism, please.
A done fact is a sophism. To say Mozart is the greatest because he is Mozart is an anti-intellectual argument. Mozart is one of the greatest composer of course, we are all agree. But Mozart is not the only one "kid composer", his father was behind him you know. Chopin and André Mathieu were as young as Mozart at their beginnig.
I am a Mozart aficionado, but he wouldn’t make my top 10 symphony list either. Maybe not even my top 10 symphonist list (Beethoven, Bruckner, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Mahler, Shostakovich, Brahms, Dvorak come ahead of him, and if I think long enough I may find a tenth one). But Mozart does make my top 10 opera and top 10 sacred music lists (requiem, c major mass). And my top 10 concerto list would have more Mozart than any other composer (at least the clarinet concerto and the A major, c minor and d minor piano concertos would be on there). Mozart was in my view best at mixing the orchestra with something else - a solo voice, a solo instrument, a chorus.
I am not aware of a Stravinsky symphony other than ‘en ut’, and this one would probably not make the top 10 list even of the most diehard Stravinsky fan. The Symphony of Psalms is a true masterpiece, but it’s a sacred work rather than a symphony, despite the title. Scriabin wrote symphonies, but his tone poems are more famous,
I totally understand. But classical pop for us now, imagine in his time. But I dont know... Everytime I listen to mozart I always feel immaturity... why?
the wrong the symphonys by Prokofjev.Prokofjev have two a master piece symphonys number one a classical and Prokofjev 7th.Too many Mahler symphonys.Take Shostakovich out.Put istead Arvo Pärt 3th symphony.Aleksander Moyzes 10th an adagio.Valentin Silvestrov 5th they are better than Shostakovich. No Mozart or Haydyn or Sibelius 2nd symphony.
DVORAK 9th is obviously one of the best symphonies ever. My youth orchestra is playing the whole thing next month. Happy to see on this list, I play the cello
So, how it was?
Its probably the first work that many people hear that makes them learn to love classic/symphonic

honorable mentions: Mozart 41, Tchaikovsky 5, Beethoven 5, Brahms 1, Schubert 9
An interesting list but I would take out the Mahler 4 and replace it with the Shostakovich 7th if your going for powerful, dramatic music. Of course the Mahler 2nd and 8th are the most dramatic symphonies in the repertoire
can you tell me which part of the moves of the Symphonies ?
Alright
My list would probably include Mahler (1,5,6,9), Shostakovich (4,5,8,15) + Dvorak's 'New World' + Shubert's 'Unfinished'.
(Not that I don't like the mighty Beethoven, but his symphonies seem somehow DISTANT to me. The opposite of that would be Shostakovich's 15th that speaks DIRECTLY to me using my language... whatever that means)
Dvorak is better 4 5 6 7 8, The 9 is overrated
@@julianariel2970 Absolutely not
is it necessary for a fan of classical music to like Mozart?
I love many composers, mainly Russian and Romantic, but Mozart just doesn't do it for me.
Hard fir me to grasp how someone loving music would not love Mozart. Requiem, C major Mass, Magic Flute, the clarinet concerto or the great piano concertos don’t do anything for you?
Wich movement of Mahler's 9th is?

The Best Symphonies Arvo Pärt Symphony no 3 Valentin Silvestrov Symphony no 5 Aleksandr Moyzes Symphony no 10! Sibelius no 2 Bruckner Symphonies 1st 2nd 6th 7th Mozart 25 Haydn 45 92 Beethoven 3th (Baptiste Vanhal Symphonies d Minor and g Minor!!)
Borodin second Symphony
In fact, Mozart excellent on the forefront of music, that is to say, the melodic plane. But the accompaniment of Mozart are often low, the counterpoint is simple, virtuosity is average, unlike JS Bach and Beethoven. Structures are often mild, it was the Viennese style of the time, the way I love this style, do not see it as discrimination. I much prefer Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach than Mozart or Hyadn for classic pure.
Listen to the Requiem and we talk again.

Top 10 (Mahler 2-9, Barber 1,2)

Tchaikovsky 4 Mahler 6 Borodin 2 Shostakovich 4 Kalinnikov 2 Brahms 3 Tchaikovsky5 Sibelius 3 Buckner 9 Beethoven any
Well, according to the vote of top 151 conductors, Mozart 41st came 3rd in the greatest symphonies list, just below Beethoven 3rd and 9th.
Just sayin........
(I see an intense debate on Mozart here)
No I like Bruckner, but I did a top ten :P
@Jeb Clar No. Bruckner was more influential, but Mahler developed symphony to unprecedented heights. For me, Mahler is better, although I love Bruckner very much. You love Bruckner, and I love Mahler, but let's go without fanaticism, please.
Beethoven is the best composer ever!
Except for Mahler
A done fact is a sophism. To say Mozart is the greatest because he is Mozart is an anti-intellectual argument. Mozart is one of the greatest composer of course, we are all agree. But Mozart is not the only one "kid composer", his father was behind him you know. Chopin and André Mathieu were as young as Mozart at their beginnig.
You picked the right one for top spot anyway I love Beethoven
Nothing from Mozart!!!???
Je me sens mal maintenant :(
@Jeb Clar ptdrrrrrrr
:(
No Scriabin and Stravinsky :-(
I am not aware of a Stravinsky symphony other than ‘en ut’, and this one would probably not make the top 10 list even of the most diehard Stravinsky fan.
I love how everyone is pretending beethoven 9 isn't the best
No pretending- it actually doesnt stand up to the Mahler Resurrection!
