Kevin Young said his program was designed to prepare young men to compete in the NBA! And this shows that 100%. Many of the basketball staff are from the NBA. He just sent a message that BYU has taken it up to the top level of college basketball and will be a force to recon with.
Right he said, the kid is from Massachusetts then played in Napa? I don’t know which Napa he’s talking about but the kid has been playing in Utah since last season.
Ok. You guys are supposed to know stuff like this. Google Kevin Young BYU and you'll understand why Dybantsa is going there. It's not just "get to the NBA", but to be prepared to enter the NBA. You're right that any team would get him "to" the NBA, but Kevin Young and staff will develop him into an NBA player before he even gets there. He didn't "develop" Durrant in college. He coached him in the NBA!
Kevin Young has a lot of NBA players who vouch for him. He has a lot of respect in the NBA. These are things he can show recruits who want to get to the league. He’s hired a mostly NBA and/g-league staff with him as well. All of this under the radar from the media but not from top recruits. BYU has signed its 4 highest rated recruits of all time in the last 6 months. BYU is in position to be the next Gonzaga and take a leap from respectable, slightly above average program all the way to yearly contenders and basketball new blood
While I am sure money was a factor, other schools were offering the same amount. I think ppl underestimate the culture at BYU, and the coaching staff at BYU I think played a big role too.
Y'all need to do more research qhen these topics come up. Yes, the money was a factor, but the ENTIRE coaching staff was brought in from the NBA to turn BYU basketball into a program that develops them into an NBA player in college instead of a resting stop for the one and done
Do a bit of research about all BYU has to offer. For one thing, BYU has very few distractions such as partying, sex, drugs and booze. Some very serious athletes are quite at home where they can concentrate on their sport and academics!! Great facilities and super fans!! Just ask Egor and Kanon about BYU!! Great coaches as well!!
Plus his father is very involved in the Utah prep school he even has partial ownership. But he also gets to stay close to his dad who has n will still be his right hand man through out his incredable journey.
I never saw an interview in which the moderator and staff were more poorly informed on the subject matter. BYU is not in Salt Lake City. AJ is playing high school basketball in Utah. Kevin Young is a former Associate head coach in the NBA. Will Voight was the Spurs G League head coach. Former G League head coach Jordan Brady has joined the Cougars program as director of player development. The entire program, including nutrition, strength training, and sports psychology, is modeled after NBA teams. BYU is not a party school so a player can focus on school and Basketball without distractions. Bleacher Report said UNC and Alabama offered 5 million before he committed to BYU. AJ currently lives in Utah, evidently, he likes it there.
Wow... I hate to point this out because I have a ton of respect for Dan Patrick, but I'm shocked that he knew zero about Kevin Young at BYU, and that he's already likely to have two first-round draft picks from his team after this year even before AJ joins next season. I mean, DAN PATRICK! And he has staff as well! And none of them knew what's happening with BYU basketball? I hope this is a wakeup call for them to be better informed--there are plenty of far lesser shows with people who could have told them these things.
If you saw him last night at the BYU/Fresno State game in the Marriott Center you would understand more why he chose the Y. He was at home with the thousand of fans who were excited to see him there. He'll fit in the BYU atmosphere very well.
The word is that AJ is getting a total of 7 million. With that being divided between NIL and his endorsements from Red Bull and Nike. I've heard from Insiders that it was around 4 million in NIL. According to a story published later that in the day on Wednesday, the money from the final schools was all about the same. So the co-host is right and saying that it was more than just the money.
You guys need to do your homework before you go on air. You sound so ignorant. Did you even listen to what AJ said about his commitment to BYU? All the schools offered the same amount. He was interested in working with Kevin Young and all his NBA connections and assistants. Kevin Young is building something big in Provo, not Salt Lake.

I know that it is hard for you to understand, but there are some great things happening in Provo, Utah.
Dan, I am surprised you didn't do a little more research before this segment. Kevin Young has hired an NBA Staff top to bottom and is modeling their whole program after NBA programs (right down to the nutritionist), and it is having a massive impact on these recruits and how attractive BYU is. The three highest rated recruits ever for BYU have all committed in the last 7 months, since Kevin Young took over the program, and they have more talent in its current roster (even without two of the top three not yet with the team) than BYU has ever Ever had. BYU has broken some incredible barriers lately. I am surprised that so many people don't understand that something magical is happening in PROvo. That might be changing now though since AJ has committed. People are starting to notice. But so many are still confused by it like you Dan. Yes, money is a big factor (because you have to compete with the big boy schools), but without a safe and productive system to get you to the NBA, these players would choose a different school. But the system they are creating is attractive!!

Pretty bad discussion due to lack of research. Provo not SLC, he is playing at Utah Prep now, around 5 million not 7 million. All schools said they would pay the same per AJ's Dad but he chose BYU for NBA prep, culture, and environment. Do better next time!

At the end of the day, its about money and boosters have ponied up now that paying for players is viewed as an acceptable thing to do. Whereas before it wasn't morally accepted in college. LDS boosters finally feel ok to do that. He's also attending a prep school in southern Utah that just started which I've heard really only exists for the basketball team. Most of the athletes at byu are guys that didnt get big offers but Byu is a little more attractive then say Fresno St or East Carolina. One of their main receivers in football was a transfer from Eastern Michigan that decided to go to Byu because the Big12 is a step up from AAC. Byu can feast on these players all day long... but to actually get the top kids in the nation... especially black kids youre gonna have to lure them in with money. No black kid from Indiana is dying to play at a mormon school. So AJ Dybantsa is an example of what Byu has to do to compete and NIL money will be a big part of their success once they start ponying up more money for Foitball and Basketball. Youd have to bribe me too to go to that school with money also.
