The movie was biblical, watch it again with the bible in mind and you will see exactly what he was trying to do with the movie. Plus the director also spoke about it.
It's about religion, relationships and humanity. The house is the world the wife represents God and creation the husband is basically the devil and ego. The people who come to the house represent those who get caught up in religion and worship of idols and how it can corrupt them. When she gives birth to the child it's suppose to represent a messiah (Jesus) who gets killed ultimately by the people just like Jesus did in the Bible. They feast on the messiah and corrupt what the true purpose of the child was to fulfill their own selfish needs like most religions. The ending can be broken down in many ways her giving up her heart in the end is God basically showing love to humanity until they have pushed the limits of forgiveness (heart turning black) and having to be judged. So when she finally burns down the house that's comparable to a great flood or act of God to reset everything. When she finally gives up her last piece of her heart with the crystal and resets everything and the wife looks different that represents a new chance for redemption or a new way to look at God different religions or paths to enlightenment. This also represents the fact that the husband has been given many chances (just like most of humanity not all) but will ultimately choose egotistical choices that will lead to the same destructive path. This is just my basic breakdown from your review and I haven't seen the movie yet so when I do who knows what else I might be able to pick up on. Great review man.
