I originally recorded this version in 1996 for my Shenandoah National Park CD Here On This Ridge, and wanted to redo it digitally for the 2004 album Virginia Wildlife, but didn't use it, so I had these raw backing tracks of two dreadnaught guitars and two flutes. I made a 'music minus one' track of them for use in concerts, and now, 21 years later, I'm supplying the lead in this informal video!
Bach composed this song for his Hunt Cantata, designed for a duke's birthday party, honoring the man for his excellent stewardship of the natural world in his domain. I reapplied the idea to the return of the Whitetail deer to the Blue Ridge of Virginia in the 1920s when the Park was established, and dubbed it 'Whitetails on High Places'.
Very ironically, in 1996 when I finished the original tracks late at night, as I was driving home from the studio a Whitetail Deer came charging out of the woods and rammed into the side of my car, then ran back into the woods! My life is full of these 'coincidences'...!
    The track recorded in 1996:
