Steve was an amazingly well- written and played character. In a lesser movie, he'd have been made a straight- up villain, sort of "I'll be the next Santa one way or another, then everyone will love ME! MWA HA HA HA!" Instead, they gave him so much more depth. He still wants to be Santa, and ego/ a desire for fame does factor into it somewhat, but it's also that he genuinely believed he's the only one competent enough to handle the position in our modern world. He is a hindrance to Arthur's quest, but you can 100% see where he's coming from with it. He also had some sympathetic moments, such as when he points out that everyone is ignoring all the billions of successful deliveries he oversaw that Christmas and obsessively focusing on the ONE he missed (And, to top it all off, the one that was missed wasn't even his fault; It was the fault of the clumsy elf who accidentally pressed the wrong button). I know what it's like for people to ignore all the good things you did and only seem to care about the one or two things you did wrong, and it's NOT fun. Then, of course, in this scene, he humbly acknowledges that Arthur is the one best suited to be Santa, and respectfully bows out. Well done. Steve may not have become the next Santa, but I'm glad he at least got the happy ending he deserved.
@@maximumoverdrive2676 Do not remind me, They had the message that being Santa is about the children, not ones own success. Agreed, Nostalgia Critic said it best on his analysis of the film on what made it great. It would have been easy to put Steve as the villain for the reasons you listed or even his and Arthur's dad the villain because he is too greedy to let go of the title but what this film does well is it shows their motivations and reasons for why they want to be Santa or stay as Santa in ways they help you sympathize with them.
“Steve you deserve to be Santa.” *Finally Steve felt all his life’s work come to fruition. He felt the greatest accomplishment he could. His birthright fulfilled* “But Steve… I wonder if Gwen is right.” *Steve and his Dad look at his Brother who doesn’t even care about what’s happening, because he’s in his own world. All he ever cared about was the happiness of the child. Bringing the joy of Christmas to the homes and hearts of the future of mankind, so that one night of the year they could believe in magic. And suddenly Steve realised… it wasn’t his birthright after all* “I’ll… be the candle ey?” *GOD WHAT A GREAT FILM*
Yeah. Steve finally learns if anyone gets to be Santa, it should be his brother. To me, it's because of character. Steve doesn't have the right character, Arthur does
Also love how the movie doesn't hold your hand or tell you why things happened, Steve realises in the span of a couple seconds that Arthur is more deserving and would fit the role of Santa more just by Steve looking at Gwen and how happy she is due to getting a bike, Steve realises this, accepts and acknowledge that he has the ideas and the know how (the candle with his bright ideas) and Arthur is the figurehead and the determination to see a job through to the end because he cares about everyone else before himself.
You know what is great about this? Gwen has no idea the trouble that went into that bike arriving. All Arthur wanted was her to have that gift, nothing about being Santa, just making that kid happy. And that’s why he too deserved to be Santa. I’m glad he and Steve are sharing it.😊
Arthur is the embodiment of what Santa needs to be and Steve is essentially the guy in the chair who helps him out cause he's the got the brains and the tech
Right. In this moment Malcom and Steve understand what all this was about and what the true meaning of being Santa is (You can say, Malcom knew it once but forgot it over the time, when Steve started to manage the process and everything becomes faster, technical and comfortable. He has finally realised that it wasn't him who did the Christmas business all those years, but that it was Steve's doing. Steve, on the other hand, has focussed solely on success, progress and figures and has discarded the true spirit of Christmas over the years. So it was no big deal for him or his father if a child didn't get a present. All except Arthur, who took so much upon himself to deliver to Gwen.) He is the only one who is perfect as Santa, and they all realised and accepted it. And are able to fix their family issues. Malcom and Grandsanta are able to let go from their role as Santa, also Steve, who finally got the Recognition he wanted and deserved and Arthur is finally not the clumsy Geek anymore that many saw in him.
I had happy tears 🥲 one time watching this ending because it was a happy ending that Arthur saved the day even though he’s clumsy and is the new Santa Claus🎅
I always acknowledge Steve’s eyes when Gwen opens her bike and when he gives the Santa piece to Arthur because he realises it doesn’t matter who makes the drop but just as long as the child gets their gift and also the experience dosen’t equal responsibility given his younger brother outright was devoted to deliver Gwen’s bike despite being the least experienced but overshadowed because he cares but also when he came he didn’t outright ego it was his place despite the travels he did to accomplish it. This movie is greatly written and deserves being memorable 😢
Steve sees Santa as a Job, Malcolm (Current Santa) sees Santa as a family legacy, but Grandsanta and Arthur see Santa as a gift for the children of the world. Merry Christmas everyone!
Watching this film back about 10 years after I first watched it as a kid and I was amazed how well it held up. Malcom/Santa and Steve are 2 really well written and slightly tragic characters: Malcom is amazingly portrayed as a man who's struggling to come to terms with the fact that his way of doing things is outdated (shown by both him only being a figurehead in the christmas operation and his affectionless attitude towards his sons in the typical manly way - ergo him saying "a pat on the back went a long way in my day" in this scene) and Steve's frigid relationship with his family is a surprisingly relatable one for a Christmas film.
I have appreciated this movie enough times in my life can I just say I've always loved Steve's outfit it's a mix of a fine tailored suit military gear and a bathroom robe
When Malcolm tells Steve he deserved to be Santa he's about to cry of happiness realizing all his work wasn't in vain, but when Malcolm tell him if he wonders if Gwen is right, he's asking him if he thinks he is the right Santa for the job after all. Seeing how Arthur give all of himself, someone who people around say he should be send to the South Pole, how much he suffer to give a little girl a gift, and see her happy, he realizes that being Santa is not just about giving all the children in the world the right present, is about making all the children happy, something Arthur give his life that night for. And in the end of the movie, even if Steve isn't Santa, he is the man that guides his little brother being the candle with his bright ideas and his technology, and is happy.
I love that scene where Steve hands the Santa title over to Arthur. Santa says he deserves to be Santa and Steve is amazed and happy as if what he’s been work for is finally here. Because he dose do a lot work and dose deserve the title for all he’s done, but Then Santa says “but Steve I wonder if Gwen is right.” All she said is Santa brought me the bike I wanted. Steve then looks at Arthur’s face and he realizes that although he dose do a lot Arthur has that sprit and drive that a Santa should have, so he swallows his pride and recognizes that Arthur really is Santa.
That’s true but I feel like technically, Arthur and Steve are both Santa because Arthur has the joy and spirit(aka the brawn) and Steve is sort of the brains, mapping all of the drops, training the elves etc. and when Steve says I’ll be the candle, I think he means I’ll be the brains to your brawn, making them a duo Santa Claus. But this is my interpretation
Funny enough when I first watched this movie in my teens I hated Steve though as I got older, I’ve been in Steve’s shoes and I see while he can be a jerk at times he’s not evil, he does love his brother, but he just got lost in the moment.
