Had a ‘81 delta 88 diesel way back in high school. Best cruisin car I ever had, got phenomenal fuel economy... as long as you weren’t in a hurry to get there😉
For sure, especially the not in a hurry part lol. I think gm advertised the 5.7 diesel could get like 900 miles per tank highway driving. I wonder if anyone ever achieved those numbers.
I want to get a diesel Electra and 98 olds and may as well get a caddy while Im at it lol. Thanks for watching. I need to make an update video on it soon
I've had half a dozen of these, everyone cussed them, I never had a problem. I sold them all for more than I paid. Wish I had another to play around with
I think they were decent motor if you knew how to properly treat them. Biggest issue with them in my opinion was the general public not knowing to let them warm up.
I was sure surprised to hear it roar to life thats for sure. They are the best riding cars out there! we have a whole fleet of cars that float down the road. We should make a video of them sometime. Thanks for watching!
Yes, that is a very good comparison with the Corvair. They would have a completely different reputation if the later models would have debuted first. Thanks for watching!
They are awesome wheels and Ive been driving it. It gets pretty regular use actually. Ive put 200 miles on it since this video. There are a couple more update videos on it on the channel if you want to check them out
Nice! This one will need to be torn down and rebuilt in the future. She has 287,xxx miles and its tired lol. I think it needs a transmission but we"ll see how time plays out. Thanks for watching!
The infamous GM gas converted diesel! Wow, came to life very well! Runs amazing for the mileage! Very nice cruising cars in their day! Very neat video and look fwd to more! Thank you for bringing us along!
It wasn't just a gas converted to a diesel, the block is significantly heavier than a gas block but they definitely didn't put enough head studs in! They must not have realized that diesels have way more compression than a gasser. This one (from what I can tell) is the original. In 1981, they pretty well had the issues worked out but the 77-81 5.7s had ruined there reputations. This being an 82 is why its still alive after 287,xxx miles. But they definitely weren't a super good motor thats for sure! They sure are good for cruising. I think the transmission is going out so we cant cruise it very far as it sits but hopefully that can change sometime! Thanks for watching!
@@cjfarms2239 You are very knowledgeable on that particular engine setup, hays off my friend!! You are 100% correct on the reputation they had in he beginning! What trans is it? The metric 200, or did they still put.the TH 350 in there. I can't remember and probably shouldn't even make any guesses. Cool video for sure.my friend!! Thank you
I havr been intrigued by the 5.7 diesels (LF9) for a long time lol. You could get 3 transmissions in these cars: the TH200, TH200-4R or the TH350. This has a 3 speed so its not the TH200-4R but I dont know if its a 350 or 200. Im guessing its a 200 because they were barely adequate for these cars and this one would be going on its 2nd rebuild.
That was not a gas conversion. I know people who were Olds Diesel techs. Completely different blocks with same tooling for easy swaps into cars with the 350 gas olds
Did you say it's been driven 300k miles already?? If so, very impressive!! I suspect many new owners were too excited to observe the recommended maintenance intervals, such as not willing to wait until the "WAIT" light goes out, etc. that the diesel got a bad rap. Looks like GM knew what they were doing even tho it took them many years to finally...perfect it, but by then it's too late and it's gone by '85. 😐
Yep! its also had a quart of atf dumped in the tank at each fill up to help clean the injectors too! They had flaws and were very slow but I definitely agree that a lot of the issues were cause by owners and not the motor itself. Letting these motor adequately warm up will extend the life of them significantly. They are like a test. If you study, you will be successful but the bare minimum isn't going to cut it with these motors.
RWD 350 30MPG Yes.... *40MPG NO* ...The 4.3 V6 in the FWD Celebrity/Cutlass could do 40MPG, and the Chevette with Isuzu Diesel could do 50MPG. - Never saw a 4.3 V8 Tested...(They were a 1 Year only 90hp Turd)
Best engines ever! The people that say they are trash have no idea what they are talking about they actually are very good engines! Cant wait to get mine finished putting it in a 3500 Chevy truck
There is a direct relationship of reliability of these motors and the owners maintenance/preventative maintenance on these motors. Thanks for watching!
I wish I could buy the car/s I've been seeing lately, I rather have a oil burner, only diesel engines need batteries for starting, furthermore the cars that still start up again + drive would mean who ever the previous owner was knew a little bit about oil burners.
Its had good maintenance thats for sure. These diesels are pretty simple but also not necessarily just need a battery, there are quit a few electronic/vaccum accessories but they do not affect the motor running or not.
Nice video, that car wants to live. I have a 79 Delta88 Diesel here in Germany. Mine will be revived 2023. Is sits since 2020 (the car fell of the trailer and crashed). :( Engine doesnt work
Ive put 200 miles on it since this video. Not many but I also haven't left a 4 miles radius with it. Thats sad but hopefully you can get it running and enjoy it again

depended on which diesel you had...the later versions of that engine had all the issues addressed, so you are incorrect
