You should definitely play Sleeping Gods if you can afford the time to play it! My partner and I are going to start our third campaign of it (it’s really replayable as there’s a ton of content!), and the narrative and endings are a fun way to bring us into the world and motivate us to come back.
I am somewhat a veteran of Breakout Con (having attended all but maybe one of them since it started). I was actually dipping my toes into D&D this time round so not too many board games played. I find that if you can wing it, you should attend Friday as well since that day tends to be a little less overwhelming than Saturday (which is the biggest day of the entire weekend). I do not know too many people on the social media circuit but I know a few from the Toronto board gamer circuit. Anyway, just subscribed to your channel.
Omg you are WAY more responsible that I would’ve been for budgeting!! 🤣 I love that whole auction area (I almost said mechanic)! Loved the games that you picked up 🙌🏽
Haha! Yeah I do wish I grabbed more than I did! There were so many great finds in that room! We also had to keep in mind that everything we purchased we had to haul home on the train. 🤣 Francis got a great arm workout that day because the bring and buy was like the first thing we did. Lol thanks for watching Tim!
omgosh - that was my copy of Near and Far! I recognize it with the organizer. Breakout Con was my first board game convention as well. My partner and I had a great time and picked up Cloud Age at the Bring & Buy. Hope you have a fantastic time with the game.
Yeah I loved the way people could set the prices for their games for three different times! It was fun. I saw some games at the start and they were a bit more expensive and I said if we came back at 4 PM and they were still there I would pick them up for the cheaper price. Unfortunately none of those games were still there but it was fun. 😊👍🏻
You will find that even if you spend 2-3 days it will not feel like you did everything. Budget is important, pre-planning is important, try not to over plan. Great recap. Thanks for letting us tag along
I'm glad you guys had a great time! This was my first convention too. We got there on the Friday and ended up playing 6 games (went from about 1030 to 3 am 😱) but finally got to try Everdell, Tzolk'in and Vitculture! Everdell was my favorite and super glad I backed the collectors box on Kickstarter! I think I saw you and Francis playing Hike on the Saturday but I was also a little overwhlemed and too shy to interrupt and say hi 😳 lol. Saw in the comments you and Chris talking about being there and I was like I'm gonna meet them both, but alas. I think Breakout was good intro and definitely walked away with a good idea of what I want to do next time. Great video. Cheers!
It was a pleasure to meet you, and I'm glad that you both enjoyed HikeIt! 🐻 I'm kinda glad I didn't have time to go more than once to the auction or I would've blown my $100 budget as well! I picked up Kingdomino Duel, but I also found Fairytale Gloom at a vendor table next to mine. I also picked up some small games from local designers and publishers at the event: Sea Change from Inside Up Games, Cutthroat Ninja from In the Den Games and Queen of Scots by Tin Robot Games. And my impostor syndrome kicked in when I was chatting with Daryl and Eric in the lobby, but luckily my wife found me before I overstayed my welcome.😅
It was so nice meeting you as well Ron! 😊 Nice! I love Kingdomino and I think Duel would be great for us! I’ll have to look into that one! I wish I had more time to go to all the vendors. I think if we had one additional day that would have been really helpful with that! 😊👍🏻
Glad you had a good time! I feel like I glimpsed you for the briefest moment in the bring and buy and then never saw you again. I should have ran around the various rooms more haha, we could have played something. I'll just have to drive to Kitchener/Waterloo instead!
That bring & buy room was WILD!! Did you spend most of your time in the large open play room? Also did you film your experience as well? Would love to see another view of the con! YESSS that would be so fun! We could also drive to you! 😊👏🏻
@@TheBoardGameGarden Yeah, I ended up in the main big room for most of it, but I was off in a table on the side of the room for the first one. I finally got some time to actually watch this video, haha, I've got my OVERLY long Vlog coming likely Wednesday where I'm also saying "where the heck is Jenna Rose!" haha. We'll make it happen :)
Great video, as always! This is super helpful since I'm heading to my first board game con at SHUX. I'll probably be super introverted like you as well, I hate feeling like I'm interrupting someone. That Café game looks neat, I'll have to keep an eye out!

Hi Tom! Thanks again for taking the time to teach us Architects. Hope you enjoyed your session of Viticulture World! Jenna and I played it for the first time yesterday and found it quite difficult. We managed to squeak out a win but only thanks to the beginner scenario allowing us to have a 7th additional year.
Glad y'all enjoyed! Thanks for the vid, very helpful! We're in Toronto and wanted to make this our first con too but unfortunately missed it. Was very interested in the bring n buy as well so thanks for the tips. We're a bit introverted too (well at least I am) but we hope to catch y'all next year... we'll make sure to bug you!👍😁🍻
Glad you enjoyed Architects, it's great Tom was there to help :) I have Tomesaga as well since I own the other 2 Garphill games. You can coop and team up against the Overlord which makes the game more interesting. But I still love using the simple base game automa. The expansion Works of Wonders I didn't get because it would make the game a lot more brainy, and if I want that I simply go for Viscounts or Paladins which have hard-to-beat AI. I do have Artisans expansion as well though, that puts enough meat on the bone! And in that way you can level up your game play.
Great video! I'm glad you both enjoyed your first Con experience! My wife and I will be going to Pax Unplugged this year, and it will be our first board game con. Can't wait! I'm a bit of an introvert, too, so I'm already planning to feel a little overwhelmed, but I hope I get a chance to meet some of my favorite content creators there. Would love to meet you and Francis at some future con and maybe even play a game together. Who knows? 🙂

Oh yes, setting a budget is key. My husband and I didn't really set one, but we kept it under a couple hundred when we went to our last convention. Also, they can be so overwhelming that, that's why I like to schedule some games and have some sort of schedule to go by. Someday I hope to go to Gencon but at the same time, I'm like... That's a lot of people. That's like taking Disney World crowds and plopping them in a convention center. My anxiety would kill me lol...
I love Garphill Games especially the West Kingdom trilogy. Glad you both enjoyed Architects.Really great with a lot of players. It may be my least favourite of the three. Only because I don’t have the player count to enjoy it to the fullest. But it is definitely the lightest of the three. I have all three and It will never leave my collection.
Hoping to try all three eventually! We do have Paladins on the way which is super exciting! Can’t wait to share that one as well. Eventually I would love to do a video talking about all three! 👍🏻

Tennessee Game Days doesn't have this Bring n Buy thing, but they do have a regular Flea Market and a virtual flea market which only happens at specific times. There are two mechanics you might be interested in called "Play to Win" and "Tours". On a scheduled tour, a tour guide will teach you how to play a preselected number of games to the players. The players know ahead of time which games they are. All of the games on the tour are "Play to Win" titles. When you play a "Play to Win" title, you earn an entry into a raffle drum to try and win that game or you can hold on to the entry and insert it into a raffle drum of a different participating game you have played. You get a maximum of one entry per eligible title you played and you cannot get bonus entries for playing the same eligible game more than once. You can choose to play multiple eligible games and then dump all of those entries into one drum for one of the games you played. The Play to Win titles are always new games that people want to try out. Fun video.

Have a delightful week-end!
(I'll be busy : the stray she-cat who took shelter in my garden and garage gave birth to 3/4 little babies in the night of Friday, 5! They are the cutest little things in the world!! )🐱 with the hedgehogs eating the cat's food (and the field mice in the attic, the birds of course...) I feel like I'm living in Everdell, ha ha! 🦔🐭
(oh! Everdell is a nice name for a kitty!)
