I have worked for this game's website for almost 2 years - just for the records - (I was employed at Disney web department for 10 years as Java, then general senior devops backend coder). I was hired for this job specifically, worked with database, user profile, paypal, card payment, etc. I turned down another offer from a major international bank for this without hesitation! Even the job interview was in a Pirates themed meeting room in the amazing looking(still operating) Budapest office with real ropes, cannonballs, streering wheel and treasure chest containing aged maps, sextant, etc; so the room looked like you are on a pirate ship. It was mind-blowing! Literally, before release date they have pulled the plug on this one, suddenly, all the HP game servers were spinning already. The site was gorgeous, yet simple; unique, dark and artistic. Even got it's own wicked character besides the game itself. The designer and webmaster threw their hearts into it. Later the talented designer got fired, he just came back from holiday in Nepal and bam, out! It was a shock for everyone, most talented graphic creator I've ever met. He even helped me to embark on my After Effects vfx hobby journey - forever gratefulness! Anyway, I am thankful for Pirates and Disney, yet they often seem to prefer aggressive capitalistic and corporate strategy driven by scientific psychology than winning the hearts and minds with true innovation and utmost potential. Much later, after worked on so many other projects, when resigned, I took the small yet amazing, oldschool globe from the treasure chest, which was at my desk since the project got shut down; it looks like a movie prop, I love it! In general, as being an IT employer, Disney is good, lots of perks(free Disneyland entry card, premiere movie tickets for family, etc) and mild pressure(not as much as in game development) with awesome, talented, friendly and fun people, of whom I still am good friend with; however, when they decide to cut costs, there is no remorse or even common sense. Thanks for the video, was good flashback! Closing with my favourite POTC movie quote, when Jack Sparrow meets with his father, Edward Teague Sparrow At World's End: -You've seen it all, done it all; You survived, that's the trick, isn't it, to survive? -It's not just about living forever, Jackie. The trick is living with yourself forever.
This channel is criminally underrated. Every video is polished, detailed and interesting. Really hope you get the recognition you deserve very soon. Keep up the great work!
I absolutely love this series, but it is often so depressing to watch. It's sad to know that games with such great potential were never released, while games like Ride to Hell: Retribution, No Man's Sky, Battlefront 2, and Metal Gear Survive are out on the market...
Tbh when looking into Ride to Hell out of boredom, big chunks of the game was cut to meet release, you can see it was meant to be an open-world game from certain things left behind not a on-rails boring awful tripe that got released and Battlefront 2 was a great game ruined by greedy disgusting practices by the studio. Though No Man's Sky and (imho any) MGS title deserves scorn.
Achillez I still find the irony the day Silent Hills was cancel was the day the debut trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 was release. Shows the path the video game industry went to this day to me.
Not only would this game make an interesting addition to Disney games, it probably would have taken the Pirates series to a different direction. Think about it. A series that did not have Jack Sparrow at the helm and added more world building. It could have had spin-offs and probably let the Pirates franchise have something to fall back on. Now, Disney gave up on their own studios and gave their most lucrative IPs to EA. It’s as if Battlefield was the karma Disney deserved.
The POTC setting was always cool and it sucks that this game was cancelled since it would've been the best chance for this franchise to live beyond Jack Sparrow. It could've spawned Lord of the Ring's styled game spin offs. I can understand the need for Sparrow in the movies, since they'd suck without Barbarossa & Sparrow. They're the only two who actually act like pirates.
This is what frustrates the crap out of me about Disney (and come to think of it any media properties that don't originate from gaming i.e. DC, WB, Marvel, Valiant comics, TMNT, Hasbro, etc.) it's that there is a gold mine/strong impact to be made in the games industry due to how well their properties are suited for games but they keep wasting potential. Yes there are some successes (Injustice, the Arkham games, Ducktales, Kingdom Hearts, etc) but there's so much more they can do like a Hellblazer game that plays like Deus Ex, or a space-themed RPG where you can play as the Green Lanterns or Hawkman or any DC Cosmic characters, or a Valiant comics brawler game, or a GI Joe anything game considering all the military stuff we have out there in gaming, or just a really good modern action game based around Superman or Wonder Woman or Black Panther or the TMNT or anybody besides Batman at this point really. It's frustrating how much these companies can do before ever reason they don't do it.
Armada Of The Damned would’ve been POTC’s Shadow Of Mordor. A spinoff taking place in the same world that we all know and love, but with new characters and interesting lore.
My favourite POTC game was the one released in 2003 also known as Sea Dogs 2. The ship combat in that game was great, and the RPG mechanics though basic was still satisfying. The only game with similar ship combat today would probably be Naval Action, a decade apart between them. I wish I could play POTC again this time with mods that passionate community around the game has made.
How the hell is it possilble, that you guys only have 144k subribers? I am the 715th viewer of this highly professional made and very interessting video, but I should be the 2.688.341th viewer...
Great video! I remember when this was announced when I was like 12-14. I was completely obsessed with fantasy movies and PotB was no different.. I was so hyped for this and sometimes still think about the potential it had.
For a moment I thought this would have been about Pirates of the Caribbean game from (I think) 2003 (?) That was an amazing game. It was like Skyrim but in the sea. You had your assigned bodyguards who you hired and could follow you. You could engage in ranged battle in the sea or board enemy vessels with your selected bodyguards. Your bodyguards had a permanent death mechanic which made their loss emotional. You could also attack cities by sea and then land and terrorize ports and kill all the NPCs. Random thugs would threaten you to give them money "or else" when outside a city, hell you could even have your own fleet! I was fairly young back then and could barely understand English, but I enjoyd the hell out of that game even though i never got too far.
I remember being sooooooo excited for this game.... I’ve always been a huge fan of pirates of the Caribbean. I even have cpt jacks sparrow tattoo on my arm. I was so excited to be able to explore the world without being swayed in my choices by playing main characters. You would be able to choose your own narrative and it was sooooo cool. My heart sank when they decided to cancel it.... I got the LEGO pirates of the Caribbean game and it was just ehh... I wish they would reboot the project
+Erlanz Haza Best that it never came out. If someone like Hideki Kamiya was having disagreements with Microsoft, it meant that they both had contrasting fundamentals for Scalebound. Kamiya likely just wanted to make a great game, and Microsoft was probably trying to push for some needless co-op shit or micros-transactions. Kamiya said fuck you, Microsoft said fuck you back funding is over. Xbox has no games.
It's definitely been on our minds; personally, I want to wait maybe a year or so before we tackle it, just because I don't think it's impossible that Platinum might self-financial a revival of the game within the next few years. Actually I think that the success of Bayonetta 3 will be integral to this; if B3 is a huge commercial hit, I think that a scalebound revival is quite likely.
I’ll be honest. This channel is so good that it’s the ONLY channel that I have NOTIFICATION for. Most likely, I don’t remember. But i think I’m sure. PLEASE KEEP IT UP.
Because good games require a lot of time and effort. Things gaming companies nowadays don't give a crap about. So if a game takes too much time, too much effort and not a guarantee that it'll sell millions, it's very easy for these companies to cancel them. Most bad games, on the other hand, at least nowadays, are games made specifically to make money. They're, in essence, easy to make, just slap in a microtransaction system and rush it out of the gate if it takes too much. They don't get cancelled because, for game companies, it's easier for them to just rush it to release and make some profit instead of canceling it and make no profit.
You do amazing work here. I remember when this game was cancelled. I just couldn't understand why. now i do. This series is absolutely amazing and it's teaching me (and, I'm sure, many other aspiring developers) the potential pitfalls I may face as a developer or as part of a development team. Hopefully learning from history prevents it from happening again. Thank you.
I do find it weird that Disney cannot seem to crack the game market. They have so many great IPs to create games on and this is a company which makes billions year on year, plus the video game market generates so much money aswell. I imagine Disney will have another crack at it at some point.

Can't wait for the day when you will cover the Reisdent Evil 2 Remake :P Best Wishes from Germany.
fantastic video as always :D some cancelled games you could make a video about next: -redwood falls -dirty harry - the game -division 9 (by irrational games)
I love the cancelled games videos, these videos are so informative and enjoyable. Perhaps they would cover the cancelled sequel to The Thing? I can only hope.
Split/Second was such an amazing and underrated arcade racing game that I ended up sinking just as many hours into as Burnout. Would love to see you guys do a video on it!
this game really broke my heart i was so hyped for it it had everything the best naval battles and best ship sailing mechanics and best land exploration at that time
there was a PotC game before that jack sparrow thing. It was an open ..eh. sea? sandbox pirate game loosely connected to the films, while very flawed it was unique in its time. Looks like you really overlooked it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean_(video_game) At least it is the first game I know of which featured sea battles in third person view (of the ship) and first person view.
The frightening number of studios that were shut down around 2010 or bought out by EA and Activision might suggest the 2008 economic crash had a much more destructive effect on the video game industry that no one has really talked about to this day. I'm honestly surprised it was even brought up in this video, it's rarely mentioned as a potential cause or correlation for so many shutdowns in this time period.
Disney really doesn't seem to know how to license out their shit. They cancel titles that look promising, and then hand out exclusivity deals to companies that don't deserve it. Kingdom Hearts 3, please be the greatest game ever so we can put SOME faith back in the Disney gaming space
The first Pirates of the Caribbean was actually just a Sea Dogs sequel with the Pirates brand slapped on it. Keira Knightley voiced the opening sequence and that's about as Pirates as it got. It was a good game save for the combat having no sense of impact. The actual trading, sailing and naval combat were fun!
Good work Disney, you cancelled this promising game, closed LucasArt and your entire gaming division (effectively cancelled Star Wars 1313), and then gave your licenses to publisher like EA. How's that working for you now?
I'm not a businessman... but it seems like such a waste of money, time, and effort to have a development team work on a game, nearly complete it, but then never release it. I think that's why many of these studios end up dying. Their publishers waste all of their time, effort, and money on a game... but they just don't release it. It's stupid.
I had a buddy that spent 3 years working hard on this project. I was super sad when he told me of it's cancellation. Seeing parts of it ported over and used in Assassins Creed Black Flag was cool though.
From the video, the game looks like a combination of Darksiders gameplay and movement and Risen 2 esthetics along with generally dramatically lower budget.
I think they should use the character of Captain James starling as a replacement for Jack sparrow and combine it with the dreaded and legendary system and have him be the lead of the franchise since Johnny Depp was fired from Disney Of him team up with Henry and Carina
Please make a video about the old Severance Blade of Darkness game and the cancellation of Severance 2, even tho they are old games their development history is very interesting and imo also very sad. Severance was also a pioneer in many parts of engine technology, it was like the Crysis of its time.
The channel needs to somehow get associated with the History channel. Using their resources this channel and their videos could make it to their cable tv network. These projects are amazing.
Another shame in the game World because this looks pretty damned good =P Great video. I had no idea that this game even existed. It would be awesome if this was revived because so many games based on films are based too much on the films and seem lifeless and boring, but there's exceptions like Shadow of Mordor, this looks and sounds the same.
whoaaaa there Pirates of the Caribbean Online was one of the best rpg’s at the time. Many many many hours of my childhood were spent on that. I’d love a new pirates game!
Absolutely enjoyed that, very well put together. My god I would of loved pirates of the Caribbean AOTD to been released it looked very promising. A sin and a shame it never graced our consoles. Pirates of the Caribbean at worlds end is a good game and captures most of what the films were about and I really liked the game, good voice acting as well.
They should do a video about Disney Infinity. I have all three games and they are always really fun to play. It's a shame that they never got to make Disney Infinity 4 like they were working on doing. Disney closed all their video game studios around that time and all the games that were in development were cancelled. That's too bad.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning looks like Armada..and quite good i must say,esp Reckoning mode, slows time to do much greater combos and damage and in many ocassions very helpfull..,w awesome storyline, honour and bravery..not to mention gorgeous sound enviroinment, which imediatelly asociates me w greatest Silent Hill horror atmosphere..and to bind myself into dark, turm up home theatre system and fully enjoying of 'fear going trough my bones' moments..sometimes turns up pic like that one from my ytb channel..from GT5 photomode..other one is from Horizon Zero Dawn cause for legendary story in which i suggest rather to play it and experiencing it by your self first time,if you can..you can't have first impression second time..btw awesome video about pirates but they need only good story, and maybe some unique gameplay, who knows..Kojima? lol
Disney is so tone deaf when it comes to products people actually want or desire. This game sounds amazing!!!! I’m very disappointed this never came out. I’d of played and bought it instantly.

I have a feeling their channel name isn't helping them.
Also he doesn't clickbait like Downward Trust who would name this video like "Disney's Cancelled RPG"
Couldn't agree more - every single video is top-shelf quality and depth - it deserves a couple of million more subs.
I absolutely love this series, but it is often so depressing to watch.

Cancelled Games are great topics to discuss
Please investigate Kojima's Silent Hills
^This and the multitude of Legacy of Kain projects that were cancelled should be used for the next two investigation videos.
Anthony Garcia omg yes
Not if Konami's legal team doesn't want to.
Soon!

you should make a video of Scalebound
Erlanz Haza I second this
That one hurted a lot
Sony COULD get the rights.

I’ll be honest. This channel is so good that it’s the ONLY channel that I have NOTIFICATION for. Most likely, I don’t remember. But i think I’m sure. PLEASE KEEP IT UP.

Damn shame, it actually looked interesting.
I do find it weird that Disney cannot seem to crack the game market.

What's interesting about this game is that even if it weren't in the Pirates of the Caribbean world, it still would've been just as successful as its own IP.
Rise and Fall of Lost Planet, I've mentioned already
But Rise and Fall of Turok?
RedFang the first 2 lost planet games were fun, and look so good.
But yeah that third one. ... big fail
@@rustcohle3803 I liked LP 3 lol
A fun a unique idea, oh wait this is Disney can't have that now.
I'm a simple man.
I see a new GVMERS video, I drop everything and click play.
very original comment
BrickArts295 what if you are holding a newborn baby?
I absolutely love the background music from the 2007 pirates of the Caribbean at world's end game in this video. Very nostalgic.
I vaguely remember this game, mostly because it wasn't something I was interested in at 17. But I really love how GVMERS is able to make me feel and understand the politics behind the gaming industry.
thanks so much for your professional work. sometimes i don't know if youtube deserves you guys. keep up the good work

RedRam Ipsen Just play Assassin's Creed IV, if I do remember, it had similar gameplay features.
Het Braadapparaat mag trots op je zijn! Lekker bezig fam 😘
whoaaaa there Pirates of the Caribbean Online was one of the best rpg’s at the time. Many many many hours of my childhood were spent on that. I’d love a new pirates game!
Kingdom Hearts & Kinda Funny footage/reference? Didn't expect that!
Please do the socom series, huge part of my life into online gaming, I miss it
It's so sad that this was cancelled. The world desperately needs a high quality pirate RPG.
Hi, will there ever be a video about Mafia? The story behind Mafia II's development is pretty interesting.
I'm so mad they didn't make this. It looked great, I loved the concept, and I'dve snapped this up in a heartbeat if it was made :)
Awesome video :) keep up the stellar work!.
14:05 that water looks sick
I hope one day this game gets spiritual succesor, just like with star wars 1313 that tunred into jedi fallen order
Both this game and Star Wars 1313 sting my nerdy heart to it's core.
This would have been the 'FABLE' of pirate games. Sadly, the shot callers have their heads too far up their own asses to know what has true potential.
Gaming Industry sleeping on Pirate RPG’s. Seriously a tragic tale indeed.
I feel smarter every time I watch this channels videos. You done got yourself a subscriber.
Must do an investigation on the legacy of kain series. Favorite series of all time.
They should do a video about Disney Infinity. I have all three games and they are always really fun to play. It's a shame that they never got to make Disney Infinity 4 like they were working on doing. Disney closed all their video game studios around that time and all the games that were in development were cancelled. That's too bad.
I wish there were more pirate games in general. Black Flag did a great job, but it had a lot of the AC stuff too obviously.
I wish this saw the light day as opposed to to the watery and floaty shit turd 💩 by Rare, Sea of Thieves. Shame....
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning looks like Armada..and quite good i must say,esp Reckoning mode, slows time to do much greater combos and damage and in many ocassions very helpfull..,w awesome storyline, honour and bravery..not to mention gorgeous sound enviroinment, which imediatelly asociates me w greatest Silent Hill horror atmosphere..and to bind myself into dark, turm up home theatre system and fully enjoying of 'fear going trough my bones' moments..sometimes turns up pic like that one from my ytb channel..from GT5 photomode..other one is from Horizon Zero Dawn cause for legendary story in which i suggest rather to play it and experiencing it by your self first time,if you can..you can't have first impression second time..btw awesome video about pirates but they need only good story, and maybe some unique gameplay, who knows..Kojima? lol
Jeez... this sounds so cool! I’m really sad it never came to be.
Oh I remember this game, it was before Assassin's Creed IV and was such a great idea.
Speaking of Ion Storm, you should do a documentary video about the failure of Ion Storm with John Romero, and Daikatana.
I was looking forward to this so much
This seems like it would have been a Pirates of the Caribbean version of kotor.
Disney is so tone deaf when it comes to products people actually want or desire. This game sounds amazing!!!! I’m very disappointed this never came out. I’d of played and bought it instantly.
@GVMERS can you make a video about Ultime Online, and Shroud of the Avatar?
I remember being very stoked for this game
The screen tearing and low/inconsistent framerate in the game footage is driving me crazy.
A video on Shadowrun 07 could be interesting
2:37 - 2:45 "looming and powerful threat" Disney itself?
seemed like a good game, i loved that anchor hitting strikes.
Oh crap I remember hearing about this quite awahile back....
Kingdom Hearts!!♡
You're everywhere :D
But yeah Kingdom Hearts is the best.
I'm glad it's a part of my life, wouldn't want to miss it :)
Same for FF though.
