1 minute Duncan Imperial video contest by Dazzling Dave

- This is a video was made for the Duncan Imperial Video Contest.
The rule was to open a Duncan Imperial on camera and with no edits or modifications to the yo-yo play for 1 minute or so.
You could change the string....and since that makes it play better, I chose to break the string and start with a slick-6 string.
This did not go as well as planned, a few too many errors along the way.....but it was fun! - Спорт
Glad you made this video showing the old fashioned Duncan yo-yo without all the fancy bearings 👍🏻
Bobby Dillashaw. Thanks Bobby. Yes this video was for a contest using a traditional Duncan yo-yo. I have found bearings are great for doing the more advanced tricks, but it’s never good to lose your roots....so playing with a fixed axle on occasion is great.
@@dazzlingdaveyoyo old school still works!! 👍
I laughed my butt off the moment you broke that string. 😂
Dave your a Legend! I still got my great grandfathers yo yo from ww1. Made out of oak and still works!
So cool, thanks for checking out my videos.
The Imperial does come single looped to sleep. But it comes with a plain white cotton string that is obviously not broken in (it takes 3-5 minutes to break in a string properly). The rules for the contest stated yo-yo had to be stock, but you could change the string....so I did to a string that was all ready to go. A standard imperial with a standard string could do all of the same tricks after it was broken in. (whole story now told?)
My yoyo had the trade mark in between the "Yo ®️Yo" like that. Dosent say made in the usa. Can u give me info on that model? Please and thank you!
@@714milky If yours had the register trademark between the word yo-yo, it was most likely made in the early 1960s. Duncan lost the trademark of the word yo-yo in the mid 1960’s.
Not a lot of monetary value as so many were made in the 60’s, and they are not hard to find. Probably worth $5-$10.
Thanks for checking out my videos.
@@dazzlingdaveyoyo wow. Thanks for the extremely fast and thoughtful response! I appreciate it!
Have a wonderful day. I just subbed!
It's like Pele with a soccer ball, a fish in the water, Bobby Fisher at the chess board, etcetera. You have an incredible amount of grace and finesse with that Duncan. The golden touch. Truly amazing. The creative limitations of the fixed axle are what make this sport/game so compelling. It gives a baseline standard for all proficiency to be ranked and rated. You are at the top, Dave. Cheers
Thanks for checking out my videos, and your kind words about my performance.
I look back and see a few errors that I would like to clean up, but because it was a competition video no editing was allowed.
Fixed axle yo-yoing is a fun challenge.
I didn't even know you could get a duncan imperial to sleep!
I still can't...😒
The string change helps. Polyester makes action more smother. Cotton string has more grip which will reduce sleep a bit.
You can notice hes having difficulty catching the string because Its a Imperial yoyo but so far, so good.
man those yo-yos are real hard to land string tricks on. Old school spinners are really good and precise
awesome mate lol...catching an imperial on the string after the throw is effin hard...i can only do it about 3/10 times.
Same
This is the toy back in my day a beer and a yo-yo
Great show. I could have done that many decades ago!
Awesome, my friend! Now I wish I could just learn the basics. :)
so fresh... but what was that trick to wind up the yo yo where it was unraveled and then you pinched it or something and it raveled itself up
I won a meda lfor proficiency with a Duncan yo-yo. I would estimate that it was about 60 years ago. It was a patch that covered most of the back of my jacket. I suppose my mother disposed of the jacket and the medal together.
I would not have guessed that there is still a Duncan company that makes yo-yos.
.
How did you get it in it's sleeper? I have the same kind and it never stays on the sleeper. Can you give me some tips?
I used to always get knots on mine, I know I may be one of the last generations, but thanks for reminding of those 90's summers, filled with scabbed needs, knotted foreheads due to practicing around the world with yoyos, drinking water from a hose, climbing trees, collecting baseball cards ahhh man, if I close my eyes hard enough, I can smell the mixture of freshly cut pasture and blood from catching a kickball, socked straight to the face, lol!!
Thanks for your comment!
For me it wasn’t the 90s but the 70s, but yes I remember those days and love them too.
what is your favorite yoyo out of your collection
@dazzlingdaveyoyo what kind of string was used? can string help it sleep better if it wasnt modded? you think you can give tutorial plz with cherry on top :D ? cause that was awesom!
THAT, was amazing !
wait did you do a split the atom/brain twister on an imperial. its nearly impossible-ive tried it once lol
So great.
Do you know if we can use a computer to add music? Because the kind of video i'm doing would be hard to do on an iPod
I can't even get this damn thing to sleep correctly.. xD
How the hell did you do all those string tricks on an interior style yoyo?
You are cool man. I respect you. I have ball bearing yoyos, but i learned almost all my tricks on imperials, butterflys and wheels (the wheels always broke). However, I am ready to start filming mine.
Was you music from a radio, or did you add it on Movie Maker?
Sincerely,
LMBasspro16
VA Top Ten Open Division Player
What were the yoyos in that case?
what did you do to make it spin???!!!
eli hops with a duncan imperial???? You get props on that
God bless u I love it I have an original 1970 Glow in the dark Duncan yo yo it's so old it wont even glow in the dark lol
I love hearing about the old classic yo-yos. Thanks for checking out my videos, and taking the time to comment about your own. Surprised it no longer glows, I didn't think that every went away!
Yeah Man!!!! Way to get it done!!!! SO cool!!!
Thanks!
It was a fun contest, testing my limits with the classic Imperial, quite the challenge.
@dazzlingdaveyoyo Yeah, I totally can appreciate that. It's actually a great idea for a contest. I love it. Especially as the focus is so often on the most fangled yo yos around.
Getting good enough to pull off the awesome tricks you did with just a stock Imperial is really impressive. Awesome job friend. What resources have you used to get so good?
Hey man, that is some impressive work with a Duncan Imperial. I enjoy those, too. They're simple and cool. But you can't do as many nifty tricks with them due to inherent limitations in the design.
how do yo get them to sleep long mine sleeps like 1 second then come backup can someone help
Whaaaa?! Awesome.
NO WAY dazzling Dave is selling yo-yo's at my school right now. I have the brain, with a hook, a manta-Ray , and extra strings. I can do a sleeper
Aidan Crow. Thanks! I hope you are having fun.
why did the string brake
the ending was awesome
What's the one at 2:42 called?
Nice work
Hey Dave, thanks for posting this, it is too cool.
While you couldve took more time to edit it, but then I guess that would kind of be beside the point no?
Cool idea, great performance, I've used an imperial, you make it look so easy, but its not.
Almost hit them elis, and the suicide catch was so close, that was sweeeeeeet.
Keep Yoing.
Does the newer Imperial have a longer sleep time? I have an old one. Way old. xp
Nope.
Hi awesome clip. What kind of string is the new one?
Slick 6. (50% cotton and 50% polyester)

epic!
Just out of curiosity. Is that Duncan Imperial one of the newer Chinese made Orin original USA made? I bought one of the ones made in China and I was horribly disappointed in the build quality and performance. I have several Duncan Imperials from the early 70s and several Duncan professional slim lines from the early 80s. The quality was much better back then for their entry level yo-yos then the ones they make today.
dan19630. I don’t remember exactly where the yo-yo was made. But I do know it was from the mid 2000’s, so there’s a good chance it’s one of the Chinese made models.
Thank you
Did you win? :D
I just bought one of these but Im having a hard time putting it to sleep. I did some research online and read that imperils are the worst for tricks. But Im seeing more of these videos and realizing that perhaps its a faulty string or I just suck at yo-yoing.
Crazy what you can do with that thing...
The beginning omg
no, but it was fun to do!
@PlayStation2FTW yes it can for about 15 to 30 seconds
He came to my school lol
same
you just got me back into yoyos thanks bro
That is awesome! Thanks for commenting, and let me know if you have questions when getting back into it.
@@dazzlingdaveyoyo i got my 11 year old boy his first duncan butterfly he love is. i found you trying to show my son some cool videos off yoyos. now im going back to get me one lol
@@hyperbipolar7952 That is great. You may want to look toward a ball-bearing style yo-yo. I would still stay "responsive" yo-yo with a bearing at first. If you get really into it, look into the friction free/unresponsive style of play. You can see what I mean on My HOW TO BIND videos. here..... ruclips.net/video/KNptYTuRbIo/видео.html
@@dazzlingdaveyoyo thanks for the reply.
Just picked up a duncan imperial yoyo at a garage sale yesterday. Haven't stopped playing with it. Back to my childhood
Is that a real inperal
they don't suck at tricks, and neither do you, they are just classic yoyos; the way things used to be. you just are not real familiar with them compared to the 'norm' in yoyos today. its always good to get back to basics. If you can pull off some of the New School stuff on a stock Imperial, you can be pretty proud of yourself. They just were not made with todays styles in mind, but you have to remember the Imperial has probably been around for as long as it has for a reason.
Nice digs
2:50 NICE DUDE!
dude, the sunset is made for looping and its not an imperial shape i think its called a modified shape or something like that
How the hell??? With a Duncan imperial? Lmao
Are you the guy from the original duncan tricks vhs?
Thanks for checking out my channel. No, I am not on the original Duncan Tricks video. Have fun!
whats the yo yo through the triangle trick called
@personman123456789 its called walk the baby
its really impressive how good u can do with a 5 dollar yoyo
i don't really know anything about yoyos, but if you have the choice between learning and developing skills on a cheap one like this vs a slightly more expensive one that has modern features that make it perform better, i would assume that any skilled yoyoist (is that a word?) would tell you to go with the modern one instead. basically if you already know what you're doing then you can do all sorts of cool stuff with it, but if you're still learning, then it's going to make that much harder than it needs to be.
Wow you hearted my 9 year old comment lmao
nice tricks I has the same thing even the color
Teach me your ways
That was a snap rewind. Not an easy maneuver, you need to snap/spin it up the string.
My Duncan when I try to do a sleeper it just goes back up even it I don't tug since your so good couse you do a tutorial how to do it thx
You might have too tightly twisted string, or a knot on the axle. The best way to test, is to just drop the yo-yo from your hand without throwing it hard. If it spins at the bottom, it should sleep when you throw it hard. If it does not spin when you drop it....there is a knot, or something else wrong with the yo-yo. I recommend getting a better beginner model.
I grew up on the imperials. Iys kinda become a lost art. Everyones obsessed with thier fancy bearings and string tricks... i misd the Smothers Brothers.
Fixed axle yo-yo play is so great! There is definitely a place for the ball bearing models, and some major advances have been made due to them....but I also love the beauty and skill that goes into the classic yo-yo! Thanks for checking out my videos.
I almost knocked my tooth out trying to do one of these tricks
Yep, got to be ready to duck sometimes!
Some of these tricks are almost impossible on a fixed axel. Im truly impressed. Is he a former world champ?
Thanks....I missed a few tricks I was aiming for, that gap is so small!
I did win a couple of world contests....Masters Division in 1996, and Fixed Axle Division in 1999. Thanks for checking out my channel.
i met u at a school u performed at.
i hope he won
wow the last 1
Everywhere I check, people say the Duncan Imperial sucks. This video shows that it doesn't suck, they do!
The Duncan Imperial is a beginner yo-yo but with practice as dazzling Dave shows it depends on the person skill level not just what quality of Yoyo you've got or whether it has ball bearings. I imagine Dave has probably whacked his knuckles and fingers many times to get as good as we see here.
ButterFly ?
Coolest dad EVUR
@dazzlingdaveyoyo
Ahhh I didnt know it was for a contest. LoL.
Take care bud.
@dazzlingdaveyoyo Oh ok thanks :D
LOL U should of done walk the dog!! Lol..
actually the imperial is good for looping, forward pass and breakaways. basic for beginners which is important. sleeping not that great for this yoyo.
MODDED
is dazzling dave dead dave?
Thanks for checking out my video....I am alive and well, having fun with yo-yos and spintops. I hope you enjoy checking out my channel.
i love that one i have it and im 12
@dazzlingdaveyoyo cool kid :D
Hi Dave, nIce to come across your video. Are those cicadas in the background? God I hate those things. I'm glad we don't have any around here. I just uploaded a Duncan Imperial Spin-Top video. Check it out!
that just proves for around $3.00 you can do loads of tricks
Lol the song they used got copyrighted now you can't heare it
My Duncan Imperial don't do that.
@dazzlingdaveyoyo well, okay then. cool tricks though
@dazzlingdaveyoyo k
@CasaDeOrellana imperial's are the worst for tricks. try a sunset trajectory
i pefer ball bearing yoyos my yoyo has A 6 minute sleep time
If it sleeps for five minutes, what's the point? Yoyo'ing is about how long you can make a fixed axle sleep. Might as well put a motor on it.
What..... impossible
