  • As a special tribute to the recently deceased Patty Duke (RIP), here is a February 1980 episode of Password Plus.
As we start the show, champion Susan (who just won the title the previous day) hopes to add $5000 to the $300 she has already won. Can she do it?

What is scary is that John Astin is barely 50 years old here! Looks like 70. Even scarier, as of August 2021, he is still alive, outliving Patti by a huge margin. And, Betty White outlived Allen Ludden by 40 years, and counting.

In the first game I was cheering for the teacher. She seemed to be such a sweetheart. The guy was a pompous ass.

+pikeman80 You're right. *I have NEVER seen such a pompous, boorish, smart ass on a game show* . The teacher was very *bright* and got almost every word with just one clue.

But he went on to win 5,000 and gave 500 to the lady he beat. Not such a bad guy. He did have an air that bugged me. TV and him weren't meant for each other.

Patty is loaded here. She's high as a kite. Even taking control of the show from Allen and he don't like you infringing on his limited domain.
I believe John knew what was going down and was nervous about it.

This aired one day after I was born (R.I.P. Patty :( )
    Prime Time/Late Night schedules
    ABC
8PM: Pink Panther Olympinks (which set the table for...)
8:30: Winter Olympics - which, among other scheduled events (men's slalom and biathlon), included the famous U.S. hockey game against the Soviets which was played a few hours earlier but ABC relegated the match to tape delay (what was worse - airing an important hockey game on tape delay or delaying Winter Olympics coverage for a Pink Panther special?!?)
Late Night: Olympics update, a special report on Iran and Afghanistan (which would become "Nightline") and a rerun of "Charlie's Angels"
    CBS
8PM: The Incredible Hulk (S3E18 - "The Psychic")
9PM: The Dukes Of Hazzard (S2E20 - "Return Of The Ridge Raiders")
    10PM: Dallas (S3E22 - "Jock's Trial" Part 1 of 2)
Late Night: Reruns of "The Avengers" and "Return Of The Saint"
    NBC
8PM: This Is Your Life, Donald Duck
    9PM: Movie "Detour To Terror"
Tonight Show: Guests were Florence Henderson, Kurt Thomas and Dean Martin
Midnight Special: Hosted by Bonnie Pointer with ELO, Nicolette Larson, the Spinners and the Outraged and Outrageous Players
Dick Cavett (PBS): Guest was Myrna Loy

I get *why* they’d want to implement the rule: Allen Ludden always said the players should go for the idea of the word, so he constantly warned against sound-likes and opposites. But agreed, it wasn’t a good rule.

Why was sororiry an illegal clue? Sorority is NOT an opposite of fraternity, it is associated with it - same thing but for the other gender. To me that's not the same as an opposite.

  • @kimsmith1746

Ok, now I KNOW these games were rigged. There is no way that she said Flipper for the characters on Bonanza, then the next one puzzle is Flipper.
